Thank you James. Hope to give this a go later today if I can get out before dark. I'm very new hobbyist, only been shooting a year & enjoy wildlife photography the most but its hard. Will give these settings a try & continue to work on anticipating opportunities. By the way, I've only been watching your channel about a month now & I already see a vast improvement in my photos. I really like your technique, approach, personality etc. Can't thank you enough.

The anticipation thing got me one of my favorite shots this year. I was walking down the Ben Franklin Parkway. There's a center sidewalk with trees on it. Sun was hitting one _perfectly._ I decided I wanted a shot of said tree, but then I noticed a couple walking on that sidewalk, coming toward my end. I waited 30 seconds. Took three shots as they went by. The second one had them right in the middle, tree right beside them, and the sun causing their shadows to merge and look like one person. It's no pro shot, but it's still one of my favorites.

Thanks James. In total agreement with you about the Capture Clip. Since installing one on my backpack the number of photos I shoot on an average day in the wilderness, where I serve as a steward, is way up. I will normally walk 6-10 miles per day and hardly notice the camera weight. Due to overhanging trees, bush, etc., I started using a piece of microfiber cloth fixed over the eyepiece with a loop of elastic shock cord. Attaches nice and snug, but pops off quickly. Great way to prevent a tiny bit of debris on the eye sensor next to the viewfinder from giving you grief.

I was at a B&H Event two years ago and first heard a pro photographer say, “compose and wait” for the shot. He might as well have said, “I just invented the wheel” based on how I responded. That comment changed how I shoot street photography! Now, you just rocked my world with a custom setting hack for quick shots. I always bracket my shots, but everything else you recommended:🤯. Popsys, you’re good! 👏🏾😃

I was an Air Traffic Controller for 30 years and would photograph airplanes at air shows, quite often very fast military aircraft, and I would set up the shot and let the plane fly into the frame. In three weeks I am going to Africa for the first time and I’m very excited about photographing the animals and scenery of Kenya. (I have a LUMIX G85 with two lenses; the 12-60mm kit lens and a LUMIX 100-300mm telephoto.) Anyway, I have enjoyed a few of your videos since I use the same camera.

Great tip on not giving up right after having missed an opportunity. Many years ago I once followed a workshop on videography. The most valuable thing I learned there (or maybe more precisely, I became aware of) is that people are quite predictable and much of what we do is ritualized. Anticipating events gets easier once you are aware of this. Then you can even think about what it is that makes the next event you expect interesting and how to capture or express that in the best possible way. Wildlife photography might be a bit more challenging in this respect than say, wedding photography, but i'm pretty sure animals have their habits too.

hiya - you can also use the C1 / C2 etc. for specific things that might happen in the place you are at - personally I have one for "panning" and another for "bird in flight" - definitely worth understanding how those "C" modes work, and how to change them quickly, for example in a bird-infested area you might want a faster pan (for doing a bird) than if you are in a harbour with speedboats flying around
@Ulrich.Bierwisch5 жыл бұрын
I'm using such a preset on the GH5. I use it in "P". It is possible to set the maximal exposure time to 1/250s and the max ISO to 1600. This way, the camera has much more room to go faster than 1/250s if there is a lot of light and ISO already as low as possible. In low light, when ISO is at maximum and the lens wide open, the camera goes below the 1/250s on its own. This way, I can get a fast shot in almost every light situation. I never change this preset so I know exactly what the camera does when I switch it on.

I am currently trying so set up a C1 profile with the following settings: Aperture Priority, Speed:1/200 max (or more as a mix) and iso 200-1600 (auto) but if i do so the camera is still cracking the s:1/200 (like 1/40 and so on) mark if light is to bad instead of warning that the lighting is not possible. I wnat to use this kind of profile for street photography :) vielleicht kannst du mir ja auch in Deutsch den Sinn dahinter erklären @Ulrich Bierwisch
@Ulrich.Bierwisch5 жыл бұрын
@@MW-df2fm In my opinion, it is better to get a picture if you use this as a fast way to get the shot. Even with a longer exposure it's better than nothing. If there is time to think about other measures, you can do what you want anyway.

Great setup description. On the BBF topic, a lot of cameras if you have it on the continuous mode and let off the thumb it'll leave focus at that lock - you go shoot one or several frames and it won't change... the advantage of going that way is that if you have something that IS continuous focus mode worthy evolving you just stay on your thumb and fire... you gotta know how your own camera behaves in this regard of course. Really good video and explanation especially for newer photographers finding their rhythm.

That's a terrific set up for quick response. I'm curious though, whether you have your metering set to matrix /evaluative. If you are using a single point center autofocus and then recomposing, I suppose that spot metering wouldn't make sense unless with BB focusing you are also locking exposure for your auto ISO. Can you tell me what you're doing with that? Spot or Matrix, and BBF set to Focus only or Focus and Exposure? Thanks! Really enjoying your channel and your images! Thanks for sharing.

The anticipating a shot when you think you missed it is so true. I saw a not large dog yap at a much larger swan at a lake, and of course the swan did not take this lightly, but I was too slow for the shot and the dog backed away, and I didn’t think it would happen again. But of course, the dog wasn’t that bright and came back to yap at the now aggrieved swan, who made quite the dramatic flap of wings and screeching at the dog.

I found with my Canons, they make the same choices I would, just more reliably. On Aperture Priority, it tries to keep the shutter speed up, upping ISO is a last resort. I expect other cameras are much the same, tuned to their lenses and stabilisation. Those with IBIS could (but probably don't) take into account how shaky the photographer is.

Good tips 👍. I am curious why the AFC wouldn't serve the anticipatory shots better esp. w/ moving subjects. Is it more your personal style or is AFC not maximized on the G9 or what not? I definitely need to get some custom setting configured. Do you generally hand hold at lower they 200/sec when it’s not a decisive moment kind of shot?

Over my 50 years of photography I have bought many different camera straps/harnesses.... and the Peak Design is the best yet. I bought the kit in Las Vegas two years ago and I am amazed by it. It gives the ability to quickly remove the strap from the camera. The Clip that you refer to is a later acquisition for me. Like you, I have it on my rucksack strap and it is just so comfortable to carry and so quick to remove the camera from the clip for immediate use. Along with anticipation, it helps to understand your subject's possible actions. This is particularly important when taking wildlife and 'candid' photos of pets which can appear to be unpredictable. Hey James, question on the bracketing and custom modes. Do you use those in conjunction with each other? Seems like that would be a great way to get 3 shots really quickly. If so, what setting do you use to bracket? You have your focal length and aperture set on the custom mode, and auto ISO. Seems to me it would be handy to have it bracket by adjusting ISO up and down, but from brief research, doesn't look like that's possible (at least on my Canon). Would love some insight!

It's more to do with the amount of enlargement you are doing. If you get a 50 megapixelish shot from the G9, you are going to enlarge it more than one from my 5Ds for a given print size. Conversely, if I crop pixels from a 17.3x13 area from my 5Ds sensor, I'm in the same ballpark as the GH5s.

Even better: Just use Aperture Priority Mode. I lock in my ISO to 100. All I think about is my DOF and let the shutter expose the shot. If I need more light, I balance the pros/cons between DOF vs more Noise to increase my shutter speeds. I shoot this way 90% of the time and rarely go home wishing I did anything else. This is my default mode. The other 10% is for more controlled situations where I have time to think about my shot and how I want to create it.

Those custom settings make perfect sense to me. Very ‘Be prepared’ . . . Wasn’t that a Boy Scout motto? Also, on the subject of back button focusing and AFS vs AFC, I tried using AFC on my G9 (with the 25mm DG Summilux lens attached, using single point focusing) and it seemed like the AFS was noticeably quicker at grabbing focus whereas in AFC the autofocus was chattering away loudly as I moved the focus point between subjects and when I came to rest it seemed the autofocus needed a split second to regain its composure.

@@JamesPopsysPhoto Thanks for the advice, I'm usually in the grandstand on a corner or general admission places (on the grass), I have found a website that you can rent that lens from so I'll give it a try next year.

@@MrRobovision I just watched a video on DPReview of Chris and another comparing the 90D and EOS M6 II. Chris got some awesome shots. His technique could probably be used on the G9, at least after the next firmware update.

Anticipating moments is the hardest for me. It's why I like shooting at drag strips where there's a series of lights that tell you when the moment is coming. I always shoot full manual. Not bragging, I'm just to thick to figure out the other modes. One day I'll sit down and figure it out.

It's definitely the hardest part of photography for me :)

I'm anticipating defining a custom setting. Practical advice as always. Got any thoughts on strategies for choosing good compositions quickly?

Why C2, curious what you’ve got the others set to? I’ve got video settings on them all but always tweaking and I like this ‘fast shot’ setting idea. Might copy :P

Being fit helps with anticipation. Also being "mindful" i.e. in the moment. Not chatting/ shopping/ on your phone. Intensity I suppose. As well as knowing your subject, eg weather, motor racing etc

Hello James I'm completely new to photography and for some time now I have been thinking about taking photography a bit more seriously. After hours of KZbin videos about cameras and camera gear and lenses, i realised that I'm more confused than ever 😅 I love hiking and spending time on the good old outdoors and landscapes and wildlife photography seems a really good idea 💡 Do you think that the Panasonic g9 is a good camera for a beginner? Thanks for all the amazing videos and information that you provided

So if I understand your exposure tip correctly, you are essentially fixing the exposure (by keeping shutter speed and aperture constant) and relying on the dynamic range of the sensor to capture the scene regardless of e.g. a variable cloud cover. After all, changing ISO is changing the amplification of the electric signal after it has been created from the light captured. And that on a MFT camera. The fact that you can get great shots like that says something about the capabilities of modern MFT cameras.

I am a beginner photography, been a few months since I started. I have a Nikon d5300. Would you recommend to save up (probably not now, as I just started, but longer down the road) for a mid-end good camera like let's say a Nikon D750, and then begin saving up for let's say a Nikon Z6/Z7, or upgrade straight from the d5300 to the Z6/Z7 when the time comes?
@JamesPopsysPhoto5 жыл бұрын
Depends entirely on your budget and uses - but don't discount second hand gear... :) And lenses will make more more difference than cameras typically :)
@ohad.58905 жыл бұрын
@@JamesPopsysPhoto Yes, I only buy 2nd hand. And budget, tbh rn I'm 15 with no job so obviously very little budget but I plan to get a job, and I probably won't move out right away at 18, so I'll have money saved up for gear. And yes, I know lenses make more difference, but once you feel limited by the body, it kinda sucks. And the Z's have eye af which is something that people love, my D5300 has af and that's it, lol. it doesn't track any subject by itself, I'll have to change the focus points manually. But it's ok.

If your'e gonna ultimately upgrade to the z6/7 anyway I would just save up straight for that. You'll get it sooner so you have more time to get intimately familiar with it, and it gives you more time to save for lenses. Plus, it seems that mirrorless is the future, so there's a good chance that when/if you grow out of the z6/7, there'll be a new nikon mirrorless so you won't have to get a whole new set of lenses or rely on an adapter.
@ohad.58905 жыл бұрын
@@Muggy206 True, but I don't really need to be talking about this right now, like I said i started a few months ago and a big issue with photographers is too much gear / never satisfied with current gear. so i might just stop watching all gear channels, stop browsing facebook (which i only use to be in 2nd hand gear groups), and just focus on the photography itself.

Quick settings in custom mode is a great idea. But I do think you probably need to set 1/200th as a "floor" for your shutter speed and not an absolute. Otherwise you will certainly over-expose (at f4) when you come to Australia :-)
