And i never knew they grew in those "pods"! Any advice how to find and transport those home? 3. I tend to have problems with PM in my area (Powdery Mildew... Southern Ontario)... How does your spray mixture work for mildew? Recommendations to deal w that prob? Great video! I am definitely going to try red rocks around the strawberry plants close to fruiting time. As for your homemade spray, you've got the ingredients for lots of different sprays there too. Starting with white oil - basically 2 parts oil (I use rice bran oil as it's cheap and always in the pantry) 1 part dish soap. Great for combating scale, aphids, leaf miner etc. For the broad spectrum spray, you might want to add some dried chilli into the mix too as it's a decent deterrent to some pests. Or make 2 different sprays and rotate them as needed.
@georgiabelle37173 жыл бұрын
Another organic pest management strategy is fungi. King Stropharia/ red cap mushrooms are native to the NE US and the mycelium kills nematodes by strangling them and the fruit (mushroom) is edible. Earth worms also love the mycelium and we all know how great worms are in the garden. Tip: if you want to continue to harvest mushrooms, rotate them.

For variety selection, I read there is a variety of collards that are meant to be resistant to cabbage worm. They are called green glaze collards or cascade glaze collards. They have a waxy coating which is meant to impart some pest resistance. I have not tried it yet, but it sounds worth trying. For disease resistance, I am testing a variety of butternut squash that is meant to have resistance to downy mildew called South Anna butternut squash. I am in NJ as well, and the tomato disease I have the most trouble with is septoria leaf spot. This year I am trying a variety of Roma tomato that is meant to have some resistance to that, called Virginia Select Roma VF. All of them are open pollinated so you can save the seeds.
@jamesprigioni3 жыл бұрын
That is super interesting Ron I will be looking into the green glaze collard, it would be fun to grow as a control even. I am constantly trying out a few new tomato varieties also and keeping some that are consistent winners and my favorites. @@jamesprigioni I grew Green Glaze Collards once, got seeds from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange, which is an excellent source BTW! Good morning and happy Sunday James. I’ve been trying to share my spray with as many folks as possible because it’s totally eclipsed anything I’ve used against cabbage moth destruction. Dr Bohners peppermint liquid castille + rosemary essential oil. I’m pretty sure it’s the rosemary that is making the moths avoid all of my lush leafy greens this year. They’re not even trying on my actual brassicas, it’s insane.
@kendrayourlove2 жыл бұрын
In my own experience, you do not need to use huge amounts of mineral oil or dish soap. I actually use no more than 2% mineral oil to water ratio and add just a tps or less of dish soap per gallon and it does the same job and a lot less heavy on the plants, I’m sure. I do however like the addition of garlic which I have not tried yet.

Great info! Another organic pest control I learned more than 30 years ago deals with tomato hornworms. Maybe you've heard of this, but in any case here it is: Whenever you see a tomato hornworm, pick it off the plant and put it into a jar with lid on. Once you gather a few of them, smash them up in the jar and let them 'rot' for approx a week. At the end of the 'rotting' period, add water and spray this mixture on the tomato plants. Any tomato hornworms that encounter it will be repelled. Yucky to do, but it 100% works! lol! Enjoy gardening all!

This is brilliant James, I have neem oil, great to use on all sorts of plants. I love all the suggestions from everyone too! Especially pin a cabbage white butterfly to my crops. I had noticed myself that if there are 2 butterflies on one cabbage one will leave quickly. I didn’t know what to do with that info though. Now I do! Love your channel, love ❤️ Tuck ❤️

Can you spread the garlic in the sieve directly around plants? It seems a waste just to compost them. Great video.

Yes, I do.

You can buy beneficial nematodes and let nature do what it does. This will help your animals (without using pesticides), with fleas and ticks as it keeps your plants safe. Less than $35.00 including S&H - a lot less expensive than a vet bill! We are in the north woods of WI and there has been a rise in ticks over the last few years.

gave up battling with white butterfly the caulis broccoli and cabbages produced the goods anyway, the easiest solution is plant one extra for the insects to eat rather than buy expensive organic sprays

Great tips! Love the red rock idea. Another good resource I use are beneficial nematodes. They work great for getting rid of the pests we don’t want.

A few people have mentioned those I will look into the nematodes, thanks for sharing that Justin

1) Identify the pest 2) Use an organic chemical spray that targets that particular pest 3) Use physical barriers/controls to prevent insects from touching your plants 4) Get some beneficial insects to visit your garden by planting some flowering species or by bringing local beneficial insects into your garden, such as praying mantis 5) choose the right varieties of plants for your garden and local area 6) Use tricks and creativity to fool common predators 7) Companion planting 8) Beneficial patrol animals, like Tuck!

We like to make decoy cabbage moths out of paper and hang em with wire around the brassica. Cabbage moths are terribly territorial.

My Yorky is a gardener as well. Opossums and stray cats beware. Thanks for the tips as I had cabbage worms last year and it was no fun. Great video.

Instead of chopping up the garlic .... just cut in half and boil in a pot of water. A friend suggested this and it is awesome! I don't have time to chop. lol Let the water cool, put it in a jug and use the next day.

I bought the BT and the neem after your video from last year. The BT was wonderful but the neem did nothing for my flea beetle infestation.... this year I'm putting nets everywhere! Great idea for the peas; the jays keep digging them up

Love the trick of the red rocks for the strawberries! That is an awesome trick! I use a lot of companion planting and society garlic has helped me tremendously, plus a homemade mix to spray any affected plants. Thanks for sharing!

Great vid. I love watching your vids because of your enthusiasm. BTW, instead of dishwashing detergent, which is different than soap, organic gardening books recommend all-natural Castille soap like Dr. Bonners. I'm cheap, so I use Murphy Oil Soap, which is natural, OMRI compliant, and 1/4 the price. Use just a tiny bit, like a few drops at a time, enough to hold the oil in suspension, because soaps can harm soil biology if over-applied.
@OurFreeSociety2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info. I was wondering what to use that is all natural.
