James, one word for fresh eating tomato: Brandywine. Apparently a 200 year old German- Amish variety. I planted approximately 18 of these, much closer together (in every direction) than they should have been planted and the bounty (and size [close to beefsteak] ) was insane. Juicy, with intense tomato flavours and balanced between sugars and acids. I will always have these in my garden. They are not suitable for making sauce unless you cook together with a plum tomato such as San Marzano but the are brilliant in sandwiches or salads and are simply the best for tomato soups.

Hello from Victoria BC. Our climate zone here makes tomato growing fairly easy and we don't seem to have a lot of disease problems. The season can be a bit short for harvesting any large crops of late varieties, but that doesn't stop me from experimenting with new (for me) varieties every year. But like James I always plant some "tried and true" tomatoes. Two of those are Lunchbucket, an indeterminate 2 1/2 " round red heirloom; and Principes Borghese, another heirloom, semideterminate red paste plum variety.
@TheUtopiansBus7 жыл бұрын
Between all of the indeterminate heirloom varieties I grew last year (Old German, Siberian, Big Rainbow, San Marzano, Cherokee Purple, Purple Calabash, Yellow Pear, Yellow Brandywine, and Indigo Cherry) - my number one pick would be the Big Rainbow Tomato. It's not the most aesthetically pleasing as far as looks go, but it packs some serious tangy and sweet flavor, grows very large (I harvested quite a few 1+ lb fruits from just 3 vines), and it continued to produce long after everything else fizzled out. Really thick vines and the suckers take root without problems.

I put a bunch on my list for next year’s tomato growing. Two of my very favorites are Pea tomato is literally the size of a pea! I like a very sweet tomato, and this meets the criteria. It seldom makes it in the house as I just pop them as I’m working outside. My other favorite is Brandywine. It’s a very large tomato, which is impressive and it has a good flavor. Sungold, of course will always be in my garden. New ones that I’m trying this year are: Hillbilly, Riesentraube, Sweetheart cherry.

I have only been growing for 2 years but my favorite is early girls so far. They are mostly a medium size with a few larger ones and super sweet. They make an excellent fresh tomato soup with some basil stock and onion (Don't bother seeding them, they would be too sweet if you did) or I eat them just plain by themselves, which I have never done with tomatoes before. The one thing I would say is they are too sweet for a BLT because they overshadow the bacon.

More likely to have tomatoes during blight years and the flavor is spectacular. I don't like to spray for blight because it requires a lot of spraying during wet years.The only negative so far is that the flavor goes down a little when cold weather sets in. It gets a little more watery during cooler weather at the end of the season.
