Watching my daughter at 5 years old dig garden worms to hand feed her rooster, who fed his hens, was amazing. At 6 I let the chickens into the garden and we had so much fun that year harvesting. She would collect eggs and get peas and lettuce and radishes. We had salads daily. We gave a lot of our harvest to our family. Buckets of snap peas. I canned pickles that year too. She could barely wait till they were ready. I had so much squash I pickled them too, and she possibly ate 95% of what I pickled by herself. The kids roasted sunflower seeds, and they never even made it to a package. They literally would go out to the horse shed and pull down flower heads to roast and then eat them all. I had braided onions out there all winter too. Think I filled half the lean in freezer in beans, squash and peas.
