That is bitter gourd. And we use it often in India. I admire your courage James for eating it raw 😅 My mum or grandma usually cook it stuffed with chickpea flour mixed with Indian spices and cooked with really less water and more like stir fry. As a child, we hated it even after cooking they tasted bitter 😂
@8thcelisabeth2 жыл бұрын
Did you like the bitter melon in the stir fry? I've seen it in recipes but not enough to actually grow it. I think I'll stick with my chicken tikka masala. I do add diced potato and summer squash to my tikka masala though.

I agree hahaha. He's brave eating it raw.
@PriscillaWong2 жыл бұрын
When James said he was going to eat the bitter melon raw, I thought, 'oh no! bad idea!' To reduce the bitterness, after I slice it up, I either a- salt it, wait a few minutes and rinse or b- parboil it before I put it in the stir fry.
@jngx802 жыл бұрын
Don’t eat it raw. Even when cooked it’s kinda bitter. Chinese usually stir fry it with pork or beef - common recipe is with black bean but don’t need it. Look up how to prep. Cooked longer so it’s softer should take out most of the bitterness. You’ve got to pair it with the meat or like rice. After you try it a couple of times it may grow on you so don’t write it off just yet. For my family it’s not an everyday dish though.
@yeevita2 жыл бұрын
@@jngx80 I could eat it everyday now, but yeah, it took a bit. Early on, I only like it super ripe and/or cooked very well, until soft. I have found some varieties now that are not that bitter even when green. Nowadays I like it barely sauteed, but yeah, he is super brave eating an unknown green one raw.

We used to grow a native variety of ampalaya/bitter gourd here in the Philippines that really looks like the one you have shown James. We fry it with eggs and tomatoes or make it into salad simply using vinegar and season it with salt. We used to add salt first and then squeeze out the juice to remove the bitterness.
@8thcelisabeth2 жыл бұрын
if the bitterness is in the juice, that's a fantastic tip!
@yeevita2 жыл бұрын
@@8thcelisabeth Yes, blanching it would tone its' bitterness down. Also just cooking it until it is soft also tones down its bitterness. Also super ripe ones are less bitter. Also some varieties are barely bitter at all.

Live and learn . Probably won't grow them anymore unless I find a different kind that seem better 🍆 with no thorniness . Ouch . I love this so much!!! It's obvious to me that, not only do you grow for a yt channel, but you actually EAT the organic produce that you grow. You are whipcord lean and have energy levels through the roof! The way you describe the taste, texture and flavor of your fruit and veg can only come from a person who grows AND EATS whole organic foods. I can take your observations to the bank because you embody the health benefits of someone eating a vibrant diet of whole, organic produce. I have difficulty embracing some other channels that "talk the talk" but obviously don't "walk the walk". Well done.

HI James One thing to try to fight off the bird damage on your tomatoes. I heard that if you have water in your garden for the birds, they will drink the water and leave the tomatoes. (you mentioned that it was very hot there)I have garbage can lids with a rock in them and then fill with water. The rock is for the bees and other insects. Dump and refill every day and see if the tomato damage stops. It seems to work for me. Amazing harvests as usual!
