I'm all about Lumix. Other then the AF history, they try to put as much features into their cameras as they can without put a 'Cannon/Sony tax' on it. In the end, the tool you have and are comfortable is the best. More about where your lens are at. They all do the job.

I have owned Nikon and Canon DSLR's over the years..and then a few years ago made the jump to Lumix. The S1 is still the best camera I have ever owned. Love it to death. It's a master of everything.

@@TrollMeister_ My first camera was a Cannon. Went with the marketing hype at the time. After using it for a year I learnt that Cannon is like iphone, they don't make the best things, they market the best things. They love new inexperienced youtubers promoting their products because they know they will invest in the glass that will keep them with their bodies. I will never buy Canon ever again.

I prefer to listen to your comparison videos than any other KZbinr. You are very unbiased and give it to you as it is. Outstanding review! As a former Z6ii owner I went A7iv for the customization and lens options and price-to-performance of Tammy and Sigma glass. At heart I'm a Canon guy that adores Nikon colors. The color science on the A7iv and it's 33mp sensor was a great middle ground and easy to work with in post. With the exceptional customization options and "My Menu" on the Sony, I never have to deep dive into the menu architecture, but it is less confusing than the Nikon to me personally. Not quite as intuitive as Canon, but vastly improved over the A7iii. Canon is losing a generation of Camera shooters by not allowing 3rd Party lens development (me included). With a family of 8, I just can't justify the $$$ for Canon RF glass. I could buy EF mount adapted (and the adaptors are excellent), but that seems retroactive. IF Canon opens their mount, I'll be selling the Sony. The lower end options of Canon's lineup (including used RPs) are very attractive options for my kids. Would LOVE to see a series on the best adapted EF glass for Canon RF mounts. If you can't take phenomenal images with all today's offerings, it's not the camera that's the problem ... that coming from someone who made a living off the 1st EOS body and a darkroom :D>.

I had the Sony a7III and wanted to upgrade to the a7IV when it was launched. At the camera shop, I handled the new a7IV, took a few shots and didn't feel excited about it. The shop owner recommended me to try out the Canon R5 and RF 24-70L. I was blown away by the images produced by the Canon combo, and bought them instead of the a7IV, I agree with James' observation that images straight out of the Sony camera, in particular, human skin tone are not so flattering and I often required more time to correct them. Thanks for the great review of these 3 fantastic cameras.

The idea that a particular brand has some "magical" color science which fixes everything is a complete myth. Every damn camera for decades can shoot raw and thus anything can be made to look like anything. Everyone should simply buy what they like or use what they've got because the camera you use means very little.

@@zenscape i was a former r5 owner but couldnt fall in love with the system. I felt the lenses were overpriced and inferior to every sony lens I tested. The final straw was when I tried a sony 70-200 f2.8 ii on the sony a7rv. the sony lens was lighter, internal zooming, and more accurate at focusing. The sony images were sharper and easier to edit. I just cant figure paying top dollar for canon lenses when sony is making objectively better stuff for much better prices. The tamron 35-150 is a GAME CHANGER. I use that lens exclusively for events now and it is amazing. Canon has nothing of the sort, and even if they did create a similar lens it would cost 3k. Anyway, im still trying to sell a few canon lenses and held onto my eos r because I enjoy using it as a travel camera, but professionally I dont think there is any reason to go with canon.

For landscapes, especially the scene you shot, you could have put them into "high resolution mode". The Lumix also can suppress movement. On the GH6, you can shoot high res handheld. For video, dynamic range is especially important, but only the Lumix offers proper tools to getting the exposure correct- Lumix all the way!

For the landscape comparison I think is not apples to apples, as the Lumix wasn't shot in the exact same light conditions as you can see in the far. This should have been made with the 3 cameras taking the picture at the same time. For the rest of the test comparison, it's a pretty good one you made. Very informative, thanks for it!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us! You're making me think about investing in an R6 MK2. Especially the way Canon renders the skin tones are convincing. I tested the S5 MK2 against my S5 MK1 for a few days. I noticed a slight oversharpening compared to the original S5. However, I found the color noise behavior more disturbing. The S5 MK2 shows significant green in the shadows, the MK1 shows a more natural black and white noise behavior. The real reason I returned the camera is a sound interference problem when connecting an external microphone to the jack audio port. There is a high frequency pulsating sound that doubles its frequency when you switch the frame rate from 25p to 50p. This annoying sound can only be heard very quietly, but it is disturbing in quiet passages during interviews, for example. I am waiting for the S5 MK2 X and hope that Panasonic will notice the issue in time and shield the audio signal path better.

I hear you about the noise colors, but even more shocking is the oversharpening and noise reduction on the standard profiles compared to the S5 and S1. Never seen such bad image quality on a Panasonic camera, the 6K is oversharpened and the 4K is full of details filtering (smoothing) in low light. The difference is huge when cropping. V-Log is the only profiles almost as good as before but we must deal with noise and the weird green tint in the shadows.

thanks for your review and those sample RAWs. I've been looking for a new Hybrid system and have been leaning toward the Sonys as I love all the lens options with that system. Then the S5ii came out and made the choice even more confusing. (as I'm a fan of the Sigma contemporary lenses, which both systems use) But after playing around with the Raw files in Lightroom, I can't not unsee how good the canon colours are, especially skin tones. Even when trying to match all three, the Sony image just looks like the model is ill, (very pale) Lumix does skin tones a little better, but seems to have more Cyan, but when trying to fix that, the face becomes too yellow. Canon just looks right, even without any correction. A shame, as it's the system that doesn't allow for the new Sigma glass.

The best comparison I've seen for these cameras ! I've used a lot Panasonic and Sony and there are too much biased videos around there. I don't like the plastic skin with the Lumix S5ii, I'm still in my 30 days window and I think about return it. At first I thought the image was sharper than my S1 but it's just the camera sharpening being stronger, the image has definitely less details my S1, the regular profiles are just inuseable for me with the S5ii. Maybe good for people who prefer a softer image. The 6K looks better but over-sharpened and yet there is a loss of fine details when I compare with my S1. I always prefered Panasonic for image quality, I think I need to try Canon or coming back to Sony. Tough choice because I know the IBIS is better on Panasonic.

That was a very good comparison. I have an S5II with the new Panasonic 14-28mm macro lens and Sigma 105mm DG DN f/2.8 Macro lenses. I also would like to get the Sigma 24-70 in the future. I have had my S5II for just over 2 weeks ago.I have not had much time to test it yet due to wet weather where I live and being unwell lup until a few days ago. I have used Panasonic cameras since I got a GH4 in 2016, before then I had used Canon DSLRs since 2008. I have used a Panasonic GH4, GH5 and GH6 and love their menu system, ergonomics and video features. I noticed the magenta shift on the S5II. The GH6 colors look better to me as they don't have the magenta issue and skin tones look quite nice. I wish Panasonic would have used those colors but they said they wanted to keep the colors similar to the original S5 and did minor updates to them. In the video tests, I liked the look of the Canon colors but I have liked Canon colors for a long time. I have seen that V-Log on the S5II is a bit softer, but it has always been a bit softer in other Panasonic cameras and some Panasonic guides I have read (one for the EVA-1 V-log and another for the DVX-200 V-Log L) mentions to bring out the detail you have to do some edge sharpening on the footage in V-Log. On the S5II I prefer 5.9K 4:2:0 over 4K 4:2:2. Sure its not 4:2:2 but on V-Log at least, the video looks more detailed in 5.9K and a little soft on details in 4K. While it can shoot internally 5.8K 17:9, 5.9K 16:9 and 6K 3:2. it doesn't output via HDMI higher than 4K, unless you buy the firmware upgrade for RAW output which is coming at the end of May. Sean from Panasonic said will output 5.9K/6K RAW to the Atomos Ninja V+ In the higher ISO photo test, it looked like the S5II had a bit of sharpening at 12800 and 25600 but then again that is very high ISO you probably wouldn't be shooting in so not really an issue. I really like the IBIS on the S5II and have really liked Panasonic's IBIS on the Gh5 and GH6. In Boost I.S, on the S5II hand holding the camera, I can get a shot like I was on a tripod. With the 14-28mm lens, I have noticed the edge wobble at wider angles with the IBIS. On one of the Lumix USA live streams, Sean from Panasonic mentioned the wobble and said something like, that it was because that for years ultra wide angle lenses were often more expensive that standard zoom range lenses and they are not common focal lengths people use most of the time, so the IBIS was always designed to correct lenses of at least 20mm.

Thank you for watching Dave and I hope you are feeling better! My first mirrorless was the GH5 and have always been a fan of Lumix's ergonomics, menus and colours just like you. I personally don't often shoot video wider than 20mm so I actually appreciate Lumix's approach with their IBIS, compared to Canon where you can still see some wobble around 24mm. I've also been loving the 6k out of the camera, as you say, noticeably sharper than the 4k if that's what you're looking for. I hope the weather improves and you get chance to go out and put it through it's paces, I think you'll love it

I think the S5 is kicking butt and is one of the best cameras for 2023. Unfortunately I'm poor and already vested in Canon from lenses, batteries to grips, so switching any time soon is out of the question. Awesome video, thanks for taking the time to put this together 💯

Great ! Your ISO test just convinced me to buy one or two Panasonic S5ii !!! as it has the cleanest image even at iso 25600 !.. (and we all face low light whenerve asked to take a photo or Video). At 5:42 the Sigma lens on the Panasonic is 3 times as sharp as the Canon RF, and Sony's GM lens. Wow. This is a surprise. ! Looking at the background ceiling when I freeze your ISO test at 5:42 It is so obvious how "'dirty" the ceiling beams look on both the R6/2, and the A7/4 (which I nearly bought because of it's 33 Mpixels. Panasonic lives again, and boy... what a come back ! . Even at iso 25600 the S5ii blond hair is sharp! and the model's face is nicely separated from the background (You have to freeze frame to see it more easily) . On the Sony and Canon the noise is like a 'separate noise layer' applied at the whole screen, blending her face with the background .. 'Like soup' 🙂 Also, The noise particles at very high ISO are SO FINE on the Lumix that No one can see it on Social media/ phone. it would look ""Normal" and even on big 65 inch TV I see this fine noise looking like a mild, deliberate effect. adding to the "'Texture" Thanks for this practical test. Canon lens is good at micro-contrast but the sensor fails on Dynamic range as you mentioned, and Canon Lenses are overpriced since the Sigma is sharper ! Same with Sony Lenses, I seen others also complain about Sony's 'Chromatic Aberration' with purpule and blue colors on every fine branch and complex patterns (as you show on them branches), Plus The Sony has the worst Jello effect when panning both on video or stills work. They each have some good points, but adding all the points the Panasonic wins by about 30% I see you noticed R6/2's lower dynamic range against the Panasonic's superior D/R I will buy the S5ii now (Photo), also buy the -X- version when it comes out in 3 months (Video) work Such useful info here I know you went to a lot of trouble Not just to talk, but to do an almost scientific demonstration.. Thanks ** So How is the Auto-Focus on the S5ii with the Sigma? is there any disadvantage in Sigma focus accuracy or Panasonic focus-speed? because the Sony A7/4 seems to front-focus on the nose, not the eye.

Thank you for the great comment! You’re gonna love the Panasonics. I’ve now had a chance to try a few Sigma and LUMIX L mount primes and have generally found them to be both excellent for video. In photo it feels like the LUMIX lenses are a little more confident at grabbing eyes.

Thank you love your comparisons and observations. I shoot primary with an R6 and a RF 24-70mm. I have invested in the Canon Rf mount. It’s $$ expensive. I was a tough call as I am still recovering from business loss during the pandemic. This video confirms I made a good choice. However all brands are pretty good these days

What really stood out to me, was how dull the Lumix looked in the nature pictures. It did lose many vibrant colors which the Canon and Sony did capture. For video however, the Lumix colors are very good, I think they are the most filmic out-of-the-box. Also, I really liked the contrasty look of the Canon for a commercial look. They look straight from a fashion ad or something.

If you take a look at the 3 nature pictures, the sun is totally covered in the Lumix one, that's why there's no contrast at all, and colors are gone. Sun is gone, while in the Canon and Sony is still pretty there, is not a good comparison in that matter.

When you have a proper LCD/EVF you don't need that at all, I never use them on my C70 and my image is always spot on. All those things are derived from the times when LCDs and EVFs were crap and somehow many cameras still have them. Having the ability to just look at the LCD/EVF and set a proper exposure and white balance is the key for efficient workflow, and Sony people had never heard about that obviously :) :)

S5 looks the cleanest to me. I paused on the ISO frame grabs around 5:09 and I disagree on your assumption of NR for the S5II. I’ve seen mixed reviews all over the place on ISO. tests on all three of these cameras. Your examples show the hair detail on the model is as good if not better than all in these examples. Also, when shooting 6k, the noise is even finer. The S5II 6k open gate 3:2 is one clincher for myself- especially mated with the SIRUI 50mm 1.6x anamorphic for 2.4:1 CinemaScope aspect ratio. I’ve seen the raw footage from this combo and it’s outstanding.
@otameal
@otameal 8 ай бұрын
The S5II "appears" noisier, but is preserving more detail, whereas the Canon looks cleaner, but is definitely employing noise reduction - reducing graininess at the expense of fine detail. (This said as an R6 owner)

Good to see you again James. Last time we met, I was debating between getting a Prime or a 70-200 zoom for portraits (I can't afford Canon RF Glass for the moment, and tbh I can't justify it either for now). Ended up getting a Sigma 70-200 Sports back then, and honestly, I love this lens Now I got a Tamron 24-70 G2 to compliment it, and a Canon R6 Mark I to replace my 90D

Too bad we can't kludge all the best features of each into a super camera! This is a thoughtful review, and I generally agree with your assessments. Lumix for video, Canon or Sony for stills. With a Sigma MC-21 adapter, though, you can mount Canon EF glass on the Lumix. So if you are a Canon user with legacy lenses... There's little risk in switching to Lumix. Of course, the L-Mount alliance is growing steadily, with Leica, Sigma, Panasonic, Ernst Leitz Wetzlar, DJI, Astrodesign, and Samyang.all producing lenses that will work on the Lumix. Some of those lenses are unobtainable (very expensive) by many of us, but at least we have choices, as we do with Sony. Canon, WHY do we not have third party alternatives for the R-mount? You're just being greedy! Yet there is a lot to like with all of these. I'm intrigued by the downloadable LUTs feature in the Lumix, which works for stills and video, allowing users to match cameras across brands.

We all know Canon R6 MII is an excelent FF camera, the problem with canon mirrorless cameras is the RF market: the bracket is so wide between poor lenses and very expensive lenses and Cannon has banned third party RF manufactures which turns out in committing at their RF optics to get a decent IQ, or the burden of the 100g EF adapter with the old ones (which I hate to carry on with). Thanks for the video, it was great
