Find out when is the best time to invest in the stock market, and how YOU can beat the majority of professional investors.
When is the best time to invest in stocks? Well, that’s simple, right at the bottom of the market after a big old market crash. But, as it happens, it’s quite hard to know when the bottom is and what the markets will do next.
Guess whether now is the right time to buy stocks is a very hard thing to do, but if you can do it right consistently you can make a lot of money. Which is why there’s a whole investment management industry built around trying to guess what’s good to invest in and when.
Using your knowledge and experience to guess whether the market is over/under value and whether it’s a good time to buy/sell is now as trying to TIME THE MARKET.
In this video, I show you that this is actually very hard to do. In fact, it’s so hard that you’re better off not trying to do it at all.
I didn’t fully believe this until I truly understood why it’s so hard to beat the market.
And it has everything to do with Jelly Beans, Efficient Markets (Efficient Market Hypothesis) and importantly fees...
This is complicated stuff but it’s fundamental to investment theory, so I have TRIED to reduce it down to a level that’s not only accessible and engaging but also still valid, which is hard to do! So please keep in mind that I have not been able to cover off all the IF’s and BUT’s.
In this video, I state when is theoretically the best time to invest and what to invest in, but this is not a personal recommendation to take action. Please do your own research and assess whether investing is right for you.

Hey guys! I hope you enjoy the video. This is actually quite complex stuff and I've tried to boil it down to something that's accessible and hopefully engaging! So please let me know what you think!

I stay from timing the market. I prefer to just invest when a company is selling at a discount. Great vid, lots of research done.

I think a big part of trying to time the market is that actually when it comes to it, most people panic and start thinking, well if noone else is buying right now, is this time different? What if it never comes back up etc, actually pulling the trigger may not come naturally to most people, easy to invisage what you want to do when the market is up, harder to execute when the market is hitting the floor.

Hello James, I am really enjoying your channel so keep it going! 🙌🏽 I have a quick question for you: what tool should I use to track markets vs investments? I would like to compare how my investments have grown in comparison to Europe our even the world. Thanking you in advance!

Hey! And thank you. It's actually really hard to judge it perfectly because you also need to take into account exactly when you buy had sell had by how much. You could see up a portfolio on google finance which just tracks an index. But you need to remember to invest in the index at the same time you invest in your actual portfolio. Because the timing of the investments is really important. I use FreeTrade had it tracks your performance against the Vanguard FTSE All World ETF, and takes account of when you invest. But you can't change the index you’re tracking.

Right at the end you said exactly what I was expecting you to say - the best time to invest is now. Do you have a list of index funds (presumably ETF's?) that you recommend investing in? Obviously the S&P 500 would be one of them, but what are the others? Thanks.

hi David, I can’t make any specific recommendations. But I think simplicity is key. If you were a 100% equity investor, you could even just invest in one global tracker fund and leave it at that. You may be able to get a slightly higher return with something more complex but that’s not Guaranteed and you open yourself up to more potential mistakes. The really key thing is that you get your level of risk right and the more complicated you make your portfolio the harder it is to anticipate what it will do.

The performance of fund managers vs an index has nothing to do with the question of when is a good time to invest. The two things are not even related.

The efficient markets hypothesis has been shown several times to be comolete rubbish. The fundamental problem with it is that to work you have to assume that every market participant has the same goals as each other. This isn't true. So, if the majority of market participants hav a goal of reducing volatility at a certain point in time then highly volatile stocks will get sold off. This means that they can become undervalued. The opposite an also be true. If the efficient markets hypothesis were credible then all stocks would be priced at a level that would mean they all give exactly the same return relative to their risk over the following years. This is, obviously, miles from what happens in reality so we know the efficient markets hypothesis is complete BS.
