My grandfather, my mother’s father had a Tobacco farm in James city county on Pocahontas trail in Virginia and yes he was a Powhatan Native American.

You need to discuss the prevalence of tobacco on the import/export euro trading market. Rolfe was a smuggler by trade, went to Trinidad and Tobago to do a shady deal with someone for some tobacco seeds there and took them right up the coast to Virginia. After that Virginia became the third world exporter of tobacco alongside Turkey and Spain. This is a HUGE economic boon to the commonwealth until the American revolution, and all of that intricate history is worth talking about.

One thing you did not mention was John Rolfe and Pocahontas had a son named Thomas.

America Was Built On Hemp - American production of hemp was encouraged by the government in the 17th century for the production of rope, sails, and clothing. (Marijuana is the mixture of dried, shredded flowers and leaves that comes from the hemp plant.) In 1619 the Virginia Assembly passed legislation requiring every farmer to grow hemp. Hemp was allowed to be exchanged as legal tender in Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Maryland. Domestic production flourished until after the Civil War, when imports and other domestic materials replaced hemp for many purposes. In the late nineteenth century, marijuana became a popular ingredient in many medicinal products and was sold openly in public pharmacies

James I of England was about 300 years ahead of his time, health-wise; for he nailed that tobacco is fatal if you intake it... ever.
@aquavirgo42033 жыл бұрын
Not only that, he spoke of a witchcraft done on the minds of people that tobacco was a cure for “pox” and everything else, and when the people got disease as result of the smoking, it was blamed on some other thing. Another “miracle” at the time was variolation or inoculation, originally despised in england and Ireland/America, by the 1700s some how we had slaves and vaccines being pushed. Destroyers of nations.

@@aquavirgo4203 I'm curious about that, so could you provide valid citations to back up that stance- not a "wiki", but valid historical material? I'd be honored to find out more about this.

Lord De Le Warr did set an offensive against the Powhatan but he was not bent on wiping them out. Governor Argall, that came later, was more of that mind set. You conveniently left out the Powhatan surprise attack of 1622. The English and Powhatan had been getting along since 1614 and James fort was nearly abandoned. Chief Opecancanough launched a surprise attack in May of 1622, killing 1/3 of the English (and other Europeans). That war lasted for 10 years - 1632, not 1625. Ended in pretty much a stalemate. The ships in 1619 were not slave ships. They were English privateer ships that captured about 20 enslaved people from a Portuguese ship headed for Mexico. They traded them for supplies. They had to off load them quickly because slavery was outlawed in England. Yes, it did open the door to slavery in the New World.
