Interesting thing about John Smith: begore becoming the leader of Jamestown, he fought as a soldier in the Long Turkish War. He was even knighted by the Prince of Transylvania, Sigismund Bathory (and before you ask he is Elizabeth B's first cousin) and served in the Wallachian Army.
@AmaraJordanMusic2 жыл бұрын
He did have quite a storied history. My husband is named Jon Smith and was born on the 4th of July. People think it’s a bad alias or something when they find out. 😂
@loke6664 Жыл бұрын
Well, at least if you trust the sources (that would be a guy named John Smith). He was.... to say it kindly... a serial liar. He described Pocahontas as a super hot young lady who had the hots for him but in reality she was just a rather young child when he met her and there is plenty of other claims he have that doesn't exactly agree with other sources. So maybe, but I wouldn't be certain of any of his claims. The Disney Pocahontas movie is pretty close to his version of events. We do know from other sources that he was a mercenary but the knighted claim and all his bravery he writes about in his book is pretty doubtful.

Honestly mate if there's any justice you'll get the subscribers and views that your work deserves. You're doing something different and individual in a area that's already got a lot of channels that cover similar topics but in different ways and often similar styles to each other rather than the new direction and style you're doing. Keep at it man. As you've seen getting mentioned by other channels is a really good way to grow so maybe reach out to some other channels and offer to work with them. Maybe you can offer to do the animation or write the script for a collaborative video or pair of videos. I'd suggest Overly Sarcastic, Jack Rackem, Extra Credits and History House Productions as great places to ask as they use animation, comedy to entertain and teach interesting topics like you and I can see you all working well together in styles and approach. Keep at man. Honestly it'd be a real loss for KZbin if you were to stop.... And me...

@@oliverkelly9164 not the strongest Empire by a long shot. The British Empire would not become most powerful for over 100 more years. England (it was not even "Britian" yet) was relatively weak compared to Spain, France and other colonial powers. Mr. Betts, I have loved so many of your videos in the past. I like this one. I'd like to offer some well-intentioned criticism if I could. Lately- the last year or so- I've had to make sure I pre-screen your videos before showing. I probably won't ever show this to my class. "Please be 18", "bugger off you wanker", "sausage party", and "turds" are terms that would get many my kids focused on the wrong things and not the lesson you're trying to give. Yep, I know they say turd all the time, but if I show it in class, I get the heat when parents lose their minds over it. And there's always at least one parent who'd hear about it and get spun up. My kids are middle-schoolers, and maybe not your target audience, but they easily could be included with a few less inclusions like the ones I've listed. I'm not trying to be prudish, but you've been in the classroom, and I'm sure you've fielded emails and calls from parents who make mountains out of molehills, and these days when everyone seems to have an advocate or a lawyer on speed-dial, I'm not taking an unnecessary chances. I know my administrator sure wouldn't. I love showing your videos, but there are just some I can't anymore. Take it for what it's worth, and I'll delete this if you'd prefer. Just wanted to offer a viewpoint from a fan who has played more of your videos in my class than any other creator on KZbin. (And that includes John Green and Crash Course History.)
@DrawnofHistory4 жыл бұрын
I completely understand. Actually, this is why I made this channel. I can make more mature content here. I never meant for the other channel to appeal to a younger audience but it did. This channel gives me more freedom. It's meant to appeal to high school and above, more the regular person interested in history than the 6th grader. Thank you for your honest feedback.

Actually, they weren't slaves as the slave system most think of only came in with a migration of the Caribbean slave owners. The blacks that came in where indentured servants whose whole work was under contract and when it was up they made free or offered to continue. Most got freedom a few continued to work, and a few of the freed went on to do it themselves.
