I find once you've done one multiple times you just seem to "know" what lanes to be in, what can be tricky is a unfamiliar spiral at night or in the wet when the road markings are almost invisible

Hi Travis. So thankful you've got a video on this. I struggled with this during my driving lessons as I keep getting confused. My instructor gave me a printed image copy of the spiral roundabout (the one I am struggling with) which he got from Google Maps to get myself familiarise as this particular roundabout will definitely be in the test route as the testing centre in my area are a few blocks from it. My test is booked next month. I have been binge-watching your videos. Thanks for all the helpful tips for a learner like me.

As a German who drove their car to the UK and is staying here for a few months I immediately came across an even scarier spiral next to my current home. It has 7 exits and you approach it on a maximum of 3 lanes, but the roundabout has 5 lanes at most times. Firstly I don't know what lane to take when approaching, then I don't know what lane to go on inside (at some exits 1 lane will come off, at others 2 will come off or none at all, making it a guessing game) and when I realise I'm on the wrong lane I can't usually do anything different from taking a wrong exit that elongates my journey for at least 5 minutes as all exits go to carriageways or motorways. And then there are traffic lights in the roundabouts that make me wonder why they didn't simply build a regular intersection instead, would have been easier and faster for nearly everyone.
@kernow93246 жыл бұрын
That does sound scary. Just know that a lot of Brits won't know what to do either. We just pretend that we do. :-)
@uberduke6 жыл бұрын
I'm practising for my driving test - practising is hard, but the road setup should be easy to understand when sitting at home :) There should be only 3 literally going around the roundabout. If you see 5, it's possible the outer 2 are exits/entries, merge/split with middle lane for exit/entry and going around (hence 3 lanes on approach to roundabout), and then there are 2 inner lanes on the roundabout. Often the left lane on the approach will just be a left turn, rather than going around the roundabout. It may look like a 5 lane roundabout but really shouldn't be
@kernow93246 жыл бұрын
Plymouth has a lot of spiral roundabouts and with heavy traffic it's sometimes impossible to see the road markings, so there's often last-second lane changing going on. You need eyes in the back of your head!

I literally did this route on the roundabout today, my test is the 14th June. Before that I was practising going straight via the Roman roundabout, as if that wasn't hard enough! I finally got that hang of that route, and then my instructor told me today to try going right on this roundabout, and it totally threw me. Finding you video has literally saved me, as I can now process what I have to do much better, thanks so much for putting out great information!

I find spiral roundabouts more logical than normal, because the lane marking literally directs you to your destination. No need to worry about changing lane (though the option is still there of course). If they were standardized and the highway code rules were changed slightly, maybe there's also an argument to be made that people who are entering the roundabout don't need to give way if the car already on the roundabout is in a different more inner lane to the one you're intending to go on?

Is it possible to do a roundabout with 4+ lanes possibly with on the approach also any advise for super busy times when said roundabouts the marking are covered by cars? Our local big island like this is full of people just using whichever lane is noving quickest n jumping across. I passed in the summer and still darent go near this island unless just turning left 😊
@eetfuk56997 жыл бұрын
Emma Howard Why don’t you look at the roundabout on Google Maps and find out which lane goes where or go on the roundabout when it’s least busy?

Do you indicate as you go round say if you came in at 6 and planned to go off at 3. Or do you just stay in lane and indicate left just as you come to your exit. Cheers.
@JamesTravis6 жыл бұрын
I would indicate right to start so everyone knows you are going round to the right. Once you have passed the 12 o clock point and are looking to move to the middle then cancel.

So at 3.50 was the mixer truck in the wrong lane on approach, as he took the same exit as you at the following roundabout, ie coukd you have taken that lane also.
@JamesTravis4 жыл бұрын
Both lanes went ahead, so the mixer truck took the left lane probably because of his size, then no one is trying to go past him on the left. But I could of taken any of the two lanes. I chose the middle because that I am already in the correct lane as I approach the large roundabout, making it easier

I’m a learner but isn’t singling at 5:58 before passing the exit that was right towards you wrong and misleading? It could have indicated to other road users that your existing that exit that was coming towards you on the right before you’ve reached your exit.
@JamesTravis3 жыл бұрын
Hi singling too early is misleading. Unfortunately this is one of my old videos and the camera on me is about a second ahead of the front camera which makes it look like I am doing things early. So when I am talking about what I am going to do, I do signal just passing the exit before I come off the roundabout. Hope that helps, thank you for watching. Safe driving

Hi Travis. That white car cutting in front of that white van at 8min into the video on the roundabout. Was that an error? Looks like it to me.
@JamesTravis5 жыл бұрын
Yes the car should of carried on in the middle lane to exit, which would of been the right side of that exit lane and then filtered in in turn. Was a bit silly of the white car, caused the van to slow more. But the positives is the white car signalled and you hoped checked his mirrors first.

Hi at 3.58 you were on the middle lane that shows you need to go straight but you took left. I didnt understand. Please help me
@JamesTravis3 жыл бұрын
Hi, look at the whole picture on approach. On the small roundabout you can either go right(use right lane). There is no ahead on the small roundabout. So to go ahead and continue the journey the road bears left then bears right to go ahead. The left lane can either go left or follow the same route as the middle lane. Hope that helps.
