I absolutely love the writing in this movie. Especially how after sick boy’s baby dies, he goes right back into stealing and doing drugs. You’d think that after that he would realize just how harmful his lifestyle has been and stop. It just goes to show how strong of a hold drugs have on a person. Great movie.

Drugs have that hold over you. I was an opiate addict for many years. When I was 19 I found my closest friend dead in his room. He ODed and had been dead for about 4 hours. I deal with what I saw daily and use it as a reminder to stay clean.

The thing I love about this movie is its brutal honesty. Its not only highlighting the struggles with addiction, but pointing out the hypocrisies within society - highlighted by Begbie ranting about 'chemicals' while he's chain smoking and getting wasted on alcohol. By the uncaring attitudes of people when dealing with addicts. Its truly a remarkable film.

For 3+ days agonizing torturous physical pain, can't stay still, can't sleep, can't keep anything in your body, sweating your balls off & the psychological pain, depression & all the emotions of things flooding in that the powder numbed away. Continuing to chase a sober high afterwards, so true. The baseline of life is so depressing for a long time. Just have to stick w/ it & honestly it gets better. I found physical exercise & creative projects helped for me. Dont give up, it does pay off.

I hate how alcohol is seen as cool in movies and show and how it can be advertised. Most people can handle their alcohol but it shouldn't be seen as something you "need" to do when you go out. I got wasted the first time when I was 13. I was and still am very shy and have trouble with social anxiety. In alcohol I found a drug for me. At first it was just a help for me to be more social. Also, I just wanted to comment that the movie got some negative reviews for supposedly glorifying drug addiction, which many people have argued against, of course. I think it was in the commentary track on the DVD that one of the filmmakers said he thought that criticism stemmed from the movie having a sort of up-beat, energetic vibe to it, while most drug movies were very somber and depressing. Having a drug movie with some fun elements and no clear anti-drug message was verboten to some people, apparently.

@@PieLov3r the novel takes place over a much longer span of time than the film does; from the late 70s to the 90s, so although the film is set in the "present" Danny Boyle wanted to evoke that passage of time through stuff like the soundtrack, hence the reason we get stuff like Iggy Pop and Lou Reed alongside Leftfield and Underworld.

Had old masters making some of their greats like Scorsese with Goodfellas, Rivette with Belle Noiseuse, Kubrick with Eyes Wide Shut, Angelopoulos with Eternity and a Day, Kiarostami with Taste of Cherry, Malick ends his hiatus with Thin Red Line etc etc. Then you got new talent from America starting off with a bang like PTA with Boogie Nights and Magnolia, Coen Bros hit their stride with Fargo and Lebowski, Linklater with Dazed and begins the Before Trilogy, and Tarantino of course. In Asia Wong Kar Wai makes banger after banger and the Taiwanese New wave hits its peak with Edward Yang making A Brighter Summer Day which is in the running for greatest film of all time imo. The list goes on and on. Brilliant moment in time for filmmaking.

"Yo" James, finally my man.!!! I've been waiting on this one for ages, i told you that you would enjoy it.👍 I live and work in area where most of the movie is set, and believe me its not changed that much since the movie was made.!!!, Edinburgh is a beautiful City (Athens of the North ) but that bit is quite a rough place.!!! TRAINSPOTTING is a great film and so is it's Sequel "T2 Trainspotting" set exactly 20 years later with ALL the cast back, and its really good as well..!!! . Also perfect timing with the passing this week of an Edinburgh legend "Sir Sean Connery" R. I. P. , who's 007 James Bond character is referenced a few times in this film👍 Im glad you enjoyed it, it was worth the wait. From an Edinburgh resident, lol 😂🏴 Check out : Welsh 🏴 film "Twin Town", its good laugh.!

@@IEarlGrey you may be right but if you are, the guy doesn't know how to write in English because he says the film itself is racist - "This is England is racist as fuck..." There is only one correct way to interpret that statement and the only reason you would have a different interpretation of what he actually meant would be if you knew him personally and if that's the case then I accept what you say. Otherwise, you are interpreting his words in the way that suits you rather than correctly.
