As a Scottish guy watching this it's easy to forget the fantastical elements, there's not much 'acting' going on here, growing up in Scotland you meet people exactly like portrayed in this film and find yourself involved in several of the plot elements growing up, it almost has a documentary quality for Scottish people, the language, behaviours, personalities and world building of this film feel very real to us

I absolutely love the writing in this movie. Especially how after sick boy’s baby dies, he goes right back into stealing and doing drugs. You’d think that after that he would realize just how harmful his lifestyle has been and stop. It just goes to show how strong of a hold drugs have on a person. Great movie.

Drugs have that hold over you. I was an opiate addict for many years. When I was 19 I found my closest friend dead in his room. He ODed and had been dead for about 4 hours. After seeing that you'd think I'd stop but nope. Kept going until about 7 years ago. Been clean for a while now and that event will never leave me. I deal with what I saw daily and use it as a reminder to stay clean.

The thing I love about this movie is its brutal honesty. Its not only highlighting the struggles with addiction, but pointing out the hypocrisies within society - highlighted by Begbie ranting about 'chemicals' while he's chain smoking and getting wasted on alcohol. By the uncaring attitudes of people when dealing with addicts. Its truly a remarkable film.

Not sure how it did in the US, but Trainspotting was a cultural phenomenon in the UK. The soundtrack was THE sound of the 90s. Spawned a whole heap of imitators that, of course, never lived up to the same level. **Edit** I don't need to know how popular it was in every other country apart from the US thanks.

Yeah, absolutely love this film. The withdrawal scene hits way too close to home for me. For 3+ days agonizing torturous physical pain, can't stay still, can't sleep, can't keep anything in your body, sweating your balls off & the psychological pain, depression & all the emotions of things flooding in that the powder numbed away. Continuing to chase a sober high afterwards, so true. The baseline of life is so depressing for a long time. Just have to stick w/ it & honestly it gets better. I found physical exercise & creative projects helped for me. Dont give up, it does pay off.

@@JamesVSCinema I've never done any "hard" drugs, though I would say alcohol is very hard drug. And withdrawals sound very similar. I hate how alcohol is seen as cool in movies and show and how it can be advertised. Most people can handle their alcohol but it shouldn't be seen as something you "need" to do when you go out. I got wasted the first time when I was 13. I was and still am very shy and have trouble with social anxiety. In alcohol I found a drug for me. At first it was just a help for me to be more social. Eventually it grew to be a habit. I'm fighting to get rid of it. I probably won't ever get rid of the cravings but I hope that my life will get better. Alcohol is just as dangerous as any hard drug.

(that's the premise of the show - is she corrupt or not?) Johnny Lee Miller's Scottish accent was perfect - his normal accent is South London! Robert Carlyle was fantastic as the best friend from hell, Begbie - still gives me nightmares Ewan McGregor - this was the film that catapulted him to stardom. The Star Wars prequels aren't the best - but there's no question that Ewan McGregor saved those movies on multiple occasions - easily being the best actor involved (his Alec Guinness impression was spot on). @@naxotogo Was he referencing heroin? I thought he was talking about AIDS; the movie is set during the 80s, I believe (though never specifically stated). Also, I just wanted to comment that the movie got some negative reviews for supposedly glorifying drug addiction, which many people have argued against, of course. I think it was in the commentary track on the DVD that one of the filmmakers said he thought that criticism stemmed from the movie having a sort of up-beat, energetic vibe to it, while most drug movies were very somber and depressing. Having a drug movie with some fun elements and no clear anti-drug message was verboten to some people, apparently.

@@PieLov3r the novel takes place over a much longer span of time than the film does; from the late 70s to the 90s, so although the film is set in the "present" Danny Boyle wanted to evoke that passage of time through stuff like the soundtrack, hence the reason we get stuff like Iggy Pop and Lou Reed alongside Leftfield and Underworld.

I was about 14 when this film came out, and it was everything for us. Coming from a poor, post-industrial town in the UK where everyone had embraced a nihilistic degeneracy due to lack of employment and opportunities, this film emboldened and articulated that nihilistic degeneracy. It gave us a sense that we were the characters in our own story - I don't know how to explain that better, but that feels close enough. We all either shaved our heads like Renton or bleached our hair like SickBoy. Takes me back.

Second from Scotland? Anyways, my dad was in this- just a bit part, when Renton is in the bar and it speeds up- he wears a red turtle neck, and passes out some drinks at the table. RIP Tommy Dobbs PS DO NOT WATCH TRAINSPOTTING 2 - GARBAGE.

@@SatanDynastyKiller Eh, I wouldn't say it's garbage. Its definitely not as good as the original, but I think it's still worth a watch. Most people seem to agree. It has pretty decent ratings on LetterBoxd.

Nah, I wouldn't say 'Trainspotting 2' is garbage either but it's a _very_ different film. If you go into it expecting more of the same you'll be disappointed. But i'd say especially if you were around their age when you saw the first film, the sequel may well really resonate (it did for me) since it's about getting older and how you deal with it. (first comment from a Scot not _in_ Scotland ?)

Funny how most of the actors had all different careers after this. Carlyle, McGregor, Lee Miller. The guy who played Sput even had a role in Wonder Woman. Miller of course had the whole Elementary series. Kelly MacDonald had a iconic role in No Country For Old Men (last scene too) - and is still as beautiful. I first recognized her in the small indie movie "The Girl in the cafe (2005)". Says a lot about the talent packed into this beast of a movie - one of those movies you wish you could erase from your memory and relive the experience watching it the first time.

For me, Trainspotting is the greatest film ever made in The UK. Incredibly shot, the points are well put across, excellent characters and very true to how Scotland was during that era. Danny Boyle and the cast done an unbelievable job on this; absolute masterpiece.

The 90’s were really a creative height for film. Had many new directors creating great films and others reaching their peak. Had old masters making some of their greats like Scorsese with Goodfellas, Rivette with Belle Noiseuse, Kubrick with Eyes Wide Shut, Angelopoulos with Eternity and a Day, Kiarostami with Taste of Cherry, Malick ends his hiatus with Thin Red Line etc etc. Then you got new talent from America starting off with a bang like PTA with Boogie Nights and Magnolia, Coen Bros hit their stride with Fargo and Lebowski, Linklater with Dazed and begins the Before Trilogy, and Tarantino of course. In Asia Wong Kar Wai makes banger after banger and the Taiwanese New wave hits its peak with Edward Yang making A Brighter Summer Day which is in the running for greatest film of all time imo. The list goes on and on. Brilliant moment in time for filmmaking.

The reason it's called Trainspotting is because Irvine Welsh, author, accidentally met his homeless father at a train station in Edinburgh and he asked him sarcastically ' What doing here son? Trainspotting?' He also plays Mikey Forester in the film and sequel.
