Hey James, so remember this came out before Daniel Craig’s James Bond. For me, the new Bond clearly drew on the realism from the Bourne movies making Craig a star. And seeing Brian Cox in Bourne makes me wanna ask if you are watching Succession these days. Some of the best writing since Breaking Bad.

The Bourne movies often get criticized for introducing shaky cam, close up and quick cut filled fights to Hollywood. While I agree with the sentiment and I am happy action movies have gone back to doing long and wide shots, I don't blame Bourne for it. It was a stylistic choice to make the fights more brutal, claustrophobic and personal. And I think the Bourne movies did it well. It's all the low effor imitators in the mid to late 00's, that started using it as a short cut for having fight choreography and hiding stuntmen.
@JamesVSCinema
@JamesVSCinema 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed, there’s a great purpose for the shaky cam. It’s not even that bad here and it’s a style I think speaks to our character whose struggling to piece his identity together.

I personally always give a pass to media that started the trope/cliché. Just because we've moved on to better techniques doesn't mean the older media is worse in retrospect. I love long takes, but The Bourne series walked so John Wick could run 👍
@ssmodk
@ssmodk 2 жыл бұрын
It was less the Bourne movies and more Paul Greengrass' personal stylistic choices in and outside of the Bourne films. Anything he could have accomplished in a wide shot, he instead did in close up while violently shaking the camera. It must really be annoying for the stunt team and choreographers, as they could have just had an impromptu slap-fight and it would have looked the same.

I love how Matt Damon sometimes just stops and thinks even in the middle of a tight action sequence. You can clearly see him thinking, going through possible actions and choosing the one with the highest probability of success. It's Jason Bourne playing chess while others are playing checkers. I have not seen anyone doing it better than Matt Damon.

I don't agree. The sequels don't fail at delivering, but the first is the best of the three. I'd agree it's a close call tho. It's just Damon nails the "assassin with a nice guy face" so well in this movie. It's actually borderline disturbing, you're looking at guy that you kinda feel you can trust, then he snaps into killer mode, "dismantles" trained assassins for breakfast, then he's back into his nice guy I'd gladly give the keys of my apartment to, to feed the cat when I'm away.

A little piece of trivia about the Bourne series - it inspired the James Bond producers for Daniel Craig's version of the character. After Pierce Brosnan, and all the others before him, they were looking for a new, fresh take on Bond. Something edgy, dangerous, gritty. They said they felt the Bourne Identity's style was exactly what they wanted/needed, and the rest is history.

This movie holds a special place in my heart. Not because of the movie itself, but because I got it as a gift for my dad’s birthday when it came out and he loved it. Once we watched this one together, we started a tradition of going to see each new one in theaters together. I miss those times, and I miss him, so I cherish those memories.

A top three cinema experience for me. Watched it on my birthday with my brother, and there was complete immersion throughout the movie.

The only good thing about your missing this movie for so long is that we get to watch you see this movie for the first time. This movie gets all the credit for changing action films with the non-hero grit realism of the hyper action and filming. Really appreciate you sharing your first watch!!!😔🍿

The sequences with the Mini Minor chase were heavily indebted to the original (Michael Caine version) of The Italian Job, including the move down the stone stairs. Highly recommended film.

Glad to see you loved one! For frame of reference, I always considered identity the "weakest" of the three, so you're in for a good time! Edit: also, the director of Identity, Paul Greengrass, made a couple of fantastic historical films, namely United 93 and my personal recommendation: Bloody Sunday. Both are not light movies by any stretch of the imagination, but I think you'd especially appreciate the Bloody Sunday film, as it shows multiple facets and perspectives of one of the darkest days in Northern Irish modern history.

sick insight on 28 days later in relation to this i had never thought about it but it makes sense how they are both some of my favorite films in opposite genres. watch the trilogy its dope! also the insight about the cameramen not only doing the bobblework but capturing their faces were a nice touch, i feel like the next 2 films capture that bobble a lot more in fact i got motion sickness watching the 2nd one in theatres many years ago lol

By the way, there was/is a prequel TV series to the Bourne franchise... named "Treadstone." I haven't heard of a renewal but the first (and apparently only) season is a 10 good episodes of TV intrigue.

The Bourne movies are known for its use of shaky cam in the fight scenes, in a good way, but there is so much more to it than that. As you noted several times in the video the camera moves even in more subtle scenes. There is a whole concept behind it of treating the camera not as a 'hand of god' but as a third person in the scene always discovering, reading, sometimes reacting which works so well with the story and protagonist. Such a contrast with Fincher whose cameras deliberately operate with the cold precision of a scalpel.

This is it, the ONLY film where the shaky cam makes since and has a purpose. Because Jason is acting purely on instinct he doesn't know what he's doing when he fights people, so it makes sense that when he fights it's just disconnected sound and motion and within a couple seconds the fight is over and he's won, but he's confused.

I highly recommend checking out the German action movie 'Run, Lola Run' starring Franka Potente, the lead actress from 'The Bourne Identity'. She is amazing, and I think you'll really appreciate the editing. The story is pretty great too. I'd like to say more, but the less you know going into it the better.

I’m really glad you did this one! It’s a film that I sometimes forget about till I see it on a streaming service and then I end up watching it (and the first 2 sequels) over and over. Great performances and there’s something about the early 2000s, European aesthetic that I find really appealing!

My favorite part about the exploding gas tank was that it was done practically, rather than CGI. You know this because of Damon's reaction AND the shockwave that can be seen in the shot which reached as far as where Matt was standing. CRAZY!

Hey bro, I've loved your videos since I found you years ago! The one and only request I will ever have is that at some point in your YT career that you react to Wilfred starring Elijah Wood. It's hilarious, insightful, and impactful. Probably weird that this is on a bourne video but your love for Matt Damon reminded me of their love for him on the show lol. I hope you keep having all this success and more because you're worthy of it!
