A fun fact, the cop on tv with the sunglasses saying to shoot them in the head and burn them is Tom Savini. He did the special effects in the original Dawn of the Dead (1978) as well as playing a role. Also, the other guy on tv saying the dead will walk the earth also played a role in the original, and said the same line at one point. They talk as if they've been through it before lol good stuff!

George Romero, the original director, said in an interview that he liked the first 20 minutes, but said it strayed into music video territory. However Film Critic Roger Ebert and Richard Roper gave this movie a positive review, giving it a thumbs up.

As influential as Romero was, he admittedly fell off in his old age. Land, Diary and Survival while trying to stay relevant. Ironically, the only reason he got to make Diary of the Dead, I believe, is because of the success of this film. R.I.P., George! Still the best, regardless.

Be sure to watch the original versions by George A. Romero: _Night of the Living Dead_ , _Dawn of the Dead_ and _Day of the Dead_ . @@IggyStardust1967 Directed by Tom Savini himself no less, not sure I agree that it is better but I see where you are coming from for sure, Tony Todd in Duane Jones part from the original is the only possible choice that could live up to the power of Jones' performance and I am so glad it exists , and Patricia Tallman is a superior Barbara so you very well could be right, I just love the originals gritty low budget feel a little more in this case.
@IggyStardust19672 жыл бұрын
@@RussellCHall Okay, I'm not throwing any shade on the original Night at all. For the time, it was groundbreaking. I just didn't think it went quite "where the times were going". Let me explain: Barbara went pretty much catatonic, which, okay, is how women tended to act back then in horror movies. But why wasn't there at least one man who did the same thing? Witnessing "the dead coming back to life and eating the living" would certainly be a traumatic experience for many people, gender aside. That's why I prefer the remake. Sure, Barbara (Tallman's version) started to lose it, but then was told she needed to "fight", so she did, knowing that her survival depended on it. Maybe having the father of the bitten girl lose his shit (in the original) would have balanced that out, especially if they had the mother trying to keep herself together and also make him realize he wasn't helping matters any. I'm not trying to second guess Romero. But the times were changing, and he DID do a lot of very good things in that 1968 version. Casting a black man as the main lead? I'm sure that made HUGE waves back then. It was just a few tweaks in the story that I think were done better in the Savini remake that put it "ahead". I still love the original as well, though. However, I do despise that whole "No Copyright card? Oh, it's MINE!" (meaning: Public Domain). That was just plain wrong. To be fair, though, I was barely a year old when Night came out, so I was much more used to seeing people react more "realistic" to shocking events. Meaning, some people (male and female) might go catatonic in that situation, but not JUST a/the women. The original was a product of its time, it just happened to be on the cusp of "older" vs "newer".

This was the first zombie movie (in English, anyway) where the zombies were fast and strong, and leapt about like Olympic gymnasts. Zombies were scary before, but slow and not strong, brittle even, and not agile, scary because it's hard to kill something that's already dead, and they are single minded in their hunger so they don't ever give up, and when you change them like that, that's a whole other level of scary. I started rewatching the show from 1987 called "Friday the 13th: The Series" and it features both Sarah Polley (as a child) and Louis Ferreira (her husband in the movie who turned into a zombie in the first few minutes, he was in his early twenties in the show), so those two have been scaring me for a really long time now. Come to think of it, that's the evolution of mummies as well, they went from slow and lumbering and brittle, to fast and strong.
