The Cenobites are fairly unique in the pantheon of cinematic horror monsters in that they are introduced bathed in blinding white light, whereas most movie monsters are shrouded in darkness. This is a testament to both their ambiguous nature as "villains" as well as the confidence that the effects crew had in their designs.
@nitrokid2 жыл бұрын
Clive Barker uses the duality theme a lot. In his toy line, Tortured Souls, he included a novella in which a character named Agonistes, very much looked like a Cenobite, was one of God's earliest creations, among other things. So that's why, despite his monstrous visage, he's one of the individuals that can pray to God, and be heard by God. So he's dark and divine at the same time. Pretty cool.

I remember renting this film so long ago that it was on VHS. I had forgotten that Andrew Robinson was in it. Andrew has had a very long and successful career as an actor. His big break was the 1971 film Dirty Harry, but of his 108 acting credits, I know him best as Elim Garak, across seven seasons of Star Trek: DS9. It was Andrew's excellent work that turned what was initially a one episode character into a recurring role.

About the minute 15:22 everyone complains about how you can see the wheels of the stroller pushing the creature down the hallway, but people forget that in the book that creature (called the Engineer) has its body melted and attached by the nerves to a wheeled machine. There's a part of the book that is not shown in the movie that describes the tortures Frank goes through in the hands of the Cenobites and it tells how Frank hears the wheels of the creature coming down the hallway with a new torture device everyday. I don't know if they intended to show that in the movie or it's a production mistake, but ironically it ends up being more accurate to the book, cos the creature actually has wheels. Be sure to react to part 2! It continues the story with the same characters.

Kentaro Miura straight up said that he was inspired by the cenobites from "Hellraiser" for his design of "the godhand". He was a big fan of Clive Barker. :) In a german interview for "planet manga" he said (translated): "I've picked up lots of ideas everywhere. And to start with the movie: I took elements from 'Hellraiser' and 'The Name of the Rose'. Apart from that, I've appreciated Escher's drawings for a long time. But the fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm have also helped me."

"Cenobite" was originally a term that referred to any group of cloistered monks. Around the same time as it found common use there arose a number of sects of flagellant monks that believed in purifying the soul through the mortification of the flesh (by whipping, piercing and cutting it usually). They were particularly active during the Black Death. You can see where Clive Barker got the inspiration for his inhabitants of what lay behind the puzzle box. Pinhead and his kin aren't the actual hell raisers (or at least not now they're not); it's the people whose inner torments draw them to open the puzzle box, or those who simply seek to try to use the powers for their own purposes. The latter tend not to survive the experience, whilst the former unfortunately do.
@nitrokid2 жыл бұрын
The Cenobites are the hierophants of the Order of The Gash (yep, that's the name of their sect), in Leviathan's domain of Hell. They don't differentiate between pain and pleasure. To them, they are often the same. The skelly-dragon hobo man at the end is an Eremite. They are the ones responsible in luring hapless souls to interact with the puzzle boxes.

He didn’t realise until later that nobody had seen him without his makeup, so they had no idea who he was when he came up to them trying to start conversation 😂

Seeing the machine behind the creature in the hallway (I believe it's called the engineer) is a drawback of high def versions of vhs era movies. When it came out on vhs, the mechanics behind it weren't visible because of the low resolution of vhs video, so they didn't worry about hiding it as much.

Cenobite is a real word that means a monk who lives as part of a community as opposed to being a hermit. In a way that is what they are in this movie. Part of the appeal of Pinhead was that he's more like a prison guard who bounty hunts the prisoners who escape from Hell. That's why Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth felt like a work of Fan Fiction instead of a real sequel. They completely changed Pinhead's nature and made him a Satan wannabe with a world-domination plan that he didn't have in the first two movies. Something that would be carried over through ALL of the sequels. In fact, if you watch the first two movies carefully, the Cenobites are NOT the villains at all, it's the human beings that summon them with the Puzzlebox because they have bad intentions. The Cenobites are simply giving them what they want. Just like Pinhead says, "Demons to Some, Angels to Others."
