@@seraphim9333 so these claims date back to 2007. Something as evident and as significant as brain damage would've put a total stop to botox if that were the case. Botox has been administered for both cosmetic and health reasons since the late 70's and early 80's, so we would've seen a huge amount of brain damage caused by botox if that were the case. the only cases of brain damage / deaths come from black market injectors. Take 'studies' very lightly. they're usually interpreted wrong / sensationalised by the media. Or pointless studies done on tiny rats

Another thing you didn’t touch on was the supposed diet/ weight loss “benefits” of this tanning drug. Like it (or perhaps something similar) was marketed as a diet supplement bc it supposedly lowered your appetite or boosted metabolism or something. Was that this same chemical?? Like it was proven to be dangerous as well. But I know whatever the diet thing was also made peoples skin darker. Correct me if I’m wrong about anything. Maybe it was another chemical.

I've always found it really interesting how people from other countries spend thousands on getting fake tan, while in most of Latin America (I know for sure since I've lived my whole life in Mexico) the beauty standard is to be as light skin as possible, and people here, instead of looking for ways to darken their skin, look for ways to make it lighter. Crazy how society makes us feel like we're not enough in our own skin no matter where we are

It makes me really sad. I am white and people are always telling me to tan but instead I take good care of my skin by heavy sun protection and treatments. I think the diversity in the way we all look is beautiful. Hopefully this hasn’t sounded offensive I’m bad at wording things properly sometimes.

I was encouraged to apply fake tan in my early teens and onwards, before "getting your legs out" and wearing shorter more exposing summery clothes because I was "too pale", "white as a sheet", "ill looking", and they'd grimace and make out it was gross and my skin looked bad, too bad to go out and wear short clothes. And then if I did get a bit of tan over the summer I'd be praised for it and told how beautiful my skin was. But then I'd see information every summer informing how bad deliberately tanning and sunbathing is for your skin and the cancer risk. I hate this culture aspect of the UK.

Unfortunately, pro-tanning people love to bombard others with stories like yours by with argument. They’ll say, “I don’t want to be vitamin D deficient,” when we know good and well the average person gets an adequate amount from the foods they eat. Even ultra processed foods are fortified with vitamin D now. And they act like they even apply sunscreen as you’re supposed to. Even with sunscreen, some uv radiation is going to be coming through. Even for those of us with malabsorption and malnourished are rarely genuinely vitamin D deficient. If that’s not their argument, they’ll say how much worse it is to use sunscreen than to just get some sun. And again, there are protective basic clothes that can protect us from uv radiation than JUST sunscreen. I use longsleeve lightweight black cotton shirt during the summer and it does a decent job of reducing sun damage, based off how much less skin damage I incur during a single day (aka developing a tan). Dark colors can sometimes make us hotter, but they work better at uv protection than lighter color clothes. Darker clothes work similar to chemical sunscreens, meaning it absorbs the uv radiation, but your skin is more protected. I’m so sorry for your loss. It is unbelievable that in 2024, people still use tanning beds.

But how MUCH did she tan? I've tanned many many times with no issues. I'm 44
@carolbaker2773
@carolbaker2773 8 ай бұрын
@@tiktokmfr (I am a veterinarian) It's really all a game of chance. Cancer is caused by your cells mutating to the point where the normal "off" switch that tells them to stop replicating is stuck "on". Sun damage increases the chance of these cells mutating and by going into a tanning bed you are increasing the RISK/CHANCE of getting cancer. Think of it as rolling some dice as an example. In a normal person if you roll a 6 you get cancer so that means you have a 1/6 chance, but tanning will make it so that a 5 or a 6 will mean you get cancer so now your chances are 2/6. You can get lucky and never hit that 5 or 6 while a person who has done everything right like wear sunscreen and has never burned might roll that unlucky 6. That is why some people who never smoked but lived with parents that did might get lung cancer over a person who has smoked a pack every day since they were 12. You also accumulate damage/mutations over time. You acutally as a 44 yr old have a different genetic makeup than you at 1yr old because you have accumulated damage over time! Now there are other reason like genetics as we do have protections against mutations so you could just have a very efficient immune system over someone else or it could predispose you to cancer like the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes that is linked to breast cancer. The poor 23 yr old got very unlucky in her game of chance as well as increasing her odds by lifestyle choices.

In Australia, because of our skin camcer rates, we used to have a terrifying anti-tanning ad showing an animated Melanoma getting in someone's bloodstream so we're real big on 'Slip, Slop, Slap' down here! I met two British backpackers who were so excited to come to Aus to tan and couldn't understand why my mum and I were horrified! As an aside, I think why the injectables are legal to have/use but not sell is so people will still seek medical treatment if they need it without fear of legal repercussions.

I got called so many things that day and my mom took the braids out that evening. We didn't know it was "unacceptable" to braid a pale girl's hair but who thinks it's okay to tell a 4 year old they're a "wannabe n*gger"? Did they truly think this child who can barely tie shoe laces could've thought "hmm I'm going to braid my whole head for hours to look like a black person." How about people should be kind and respectful and leave others alone.

i'm from central europe and being tan is seen as a positive thing. i got teased for my fair skin and i agonized over it for years. my mom always tells me i need to sunbathe (which would supposedly help with my acne too lol). every summer i desperately hoped that i would finally get a tan, but all i ever got was a sunburn. i only learned about the dangers of sunbathing last year and started wearing sunscreen religiously. my mom told me that i can't trust everything i read on the internet (my sources were certified medical professionals 🙈) and she refuses to accept the fact that you should wear it every day :/

Yes I am dark skinned and I hate the sun.. It just feels sooo hot. I've never liked sitting in the sun, partly because of a fear of becoming even darker ( I've been teased for being dark skinned, my grandma even gave me bleaching crème as a child). As a person that has eczema prone skin, burns within 2 minutes, needs to use sunscreen on cloudy days, and was never able to get even slightly tanned - i understand the self-esteem problems it brings. Ive been horrendously bullied and STILL get harassment in the summer because of my 'dead-pale legs and dead-coloured face'. For some reason, im a circus act to be pointed at. When I was younger, i tried EVERYTHING to get a slightly darker skin, but nothing worked. Just to not be seen as a freak.. Today, im glad that i found a routine to not burn, and above all - to have a skin that's cancer and wrinkle free. It may not be the beauty standard to be "dead coloured" pale, acne prone and having eczema patches, but atleast my skin is overall healthy. A healthy skin is a beautiful skin. And if my healthy, cancer free skin needs to be laughed at, so be it. Never take your health for granted, it really is NOT worth the risk my dear! If anyone who reads this struggles with the same thing - always remind yourself that your skin will age way less quick when using proper precautions against sun damage. You may be laughed at today, but in 40 years everyone thats tanned and burned for decades will be SOOOO jealous of your gorgeous young skin!! 💜☀️

I love pale skin and think it's beautiful! And there's a lot of people around the world that feel that way. In some countries dark or tan skin is looked down on, and pale skin is the beauty standard. It just goes to show you how ridiculous and arbitrary these color standards are. Dark skin is beautiful too, and everything in between. There's no skin tone that's any better than the others, and I think healthy skin of whatever color is what people should strive for, and it's beautiful to be confident in the skin you're in, and disregard the ignorant people that think people should only come in one shade or color.

My mum was one of those who claimed she needed a “base tan” from a tanning bed before summer so she wouldn’t burn. I’m shocked she hasn’t had any type of skin cancer yet considering how much she went. She even encouraged me to go to a few sessions when I was about 13. I’m very fair skinned and was petrified of turning orange, so I never did it thankfully. And mind you, this was the early 2000’s, so tanning was cool. My mom used to tell me that if I got a base tan, then I wouldn’t have to wear sunscreen all summer because then I wouldn’t burn. As a kid and teen, I spent all summer outside. And the summer is very long here, so I was outside at the pool or out hiking a lot. But mom wasn’t about to spend money at a tanning salon for me, so her solution was for me to wear a light colored shirt (usually white) outside at the beginning of summer, especially at the pool. She swore that it would prevent me from getting sunburned and I would get a gradual tan. Then 2 weeks in to summer I could wear a swimsuit or whatever and not burn. Then one time in the middle of summer we went to a water park and spent all day there. I ended up with such a bad sunburn on my face, shoulders, and chest that I had blisters on my cheeks and chin. It was gross. Anyway, melanoma runs in my dad’s side of the family and I have a lot of moles/nevus. So once I hit college in the 00s, I was terrified of skin cancer. All my friends were tanning like crazy and I was loading up on sunscreen.

And if anyone hasn't seen the sunbed deaths in Final Destination, I urge you to watch :D I knew I'd never ever use one again after that :D Now that I'm older I no longer give a crap about having pale skin, I wear what I like in the summer and use sunblock, but I'm ok with my pale skin. Took a long time though, so I sympathise with anyone going through it. Every girl always has that one friend with the most beautiful golden skin that is completely natural, and who only has to look at the sun to get a tan :) Just remember though, that they will have problems of their own, things they don't like about themselves, and it just happens that skin isn't one of them. I really wish influencers would do more research into products they promote as I’m not the only one who has had these side effects. I didn’t do my own research into the serum because I’ve used different serums before and never had any side effects. All these influencers using it also didn’t have any issues with it, so I didn’t think my eye drooping significantly had anything to do with the serum until I saw others on TikTok complaining about their own experiences. I stopped using the lash serum and after a couple of days, my eyelid stopped drooping (it’s still irritated now tho).

I cant tell you how grateful I am that people are starting to speak out about tanning being bad for you. And while my cousin is praised for her healthy glow and tan, exotic looking skin, I get yelled at and seen on my deathbed if I so much as step outside in a Tshirt. I put on sunscreen religiously, and still get a little bit of colour sometimes. It happens when one is outside a lot. Every spring its either "Go outside, you need some vitamin D!". Yet If i do sit outside in the sun, I get "Get inside, youll burn yourself and get cancer!". So whatever I do it seems to be wrong. Also, my dermatologist said there is such a thing as being too tan. Meaning just because one tans easier does not mean you cannot get skin cancer! Im so sick of this cult developing around looking tan, because it puts so much pressure on those of us who dont tan or not very much. You dont feel attractive, sexy or good because everyone around you says "you look ill". Well sorry for my genetics! And ive seriously come to loathe my skintone because of this, because im being judged no matter what I do. Also Ibe realized in Ads, you very rarely see fairskinned people, or at least I havent noticed, so you are made to think only tan skin is attractive. Its so frustrating! In the past, I used to be constantly asked why I'm so white, if I'm feeling alright (if I'm going to pass out) and I was told to go out in the sun and get some colour. I never felt ashamed of my skin, but I can imagine that plenty of people would start feeling self-conscious

I’m covered in moles (genetic thing, not a sun thing), so I’ve already been well aware of how they form and how you have to keep an eye on them if they begin to grow or change color. But because I have many, it’s hard to know which ones are new, so I avoid sun all together and do my best to keep count 😂

Me, too! I assume people think it's because I don't wear sunscreen although I always do. I have a penny-sized mole between my shoulder blades that showed up shortly after I was born. I remember for May Day senior year I was one of the MC's and wore a dress that came down low enough to show it. Someone commented on it and implied that I should feel shame for not covering up something so ugly. I told her it doesn't bother me and that shut her down really quick. I don't know why we say those kinds of things to each other.

I work with a couple of girls who are obsessed with tanning. One coworker even admits to going for 15 minutes every single day. She admits she knows the risk, however, she’d never want to be pale again so it’s worth it. Another coworker does fake tan I think she uses a mouse or something like that and she tends to be orange but she also would rather not be pale. I’m a pretty pale girl and I’m ok with it, sometimes I do wish I’d have a tan, but I’m just too lazy to put in so the effort. Love what you do with your channel! Please don’t ever give up!

i love how empathetic you are to the people who are victims to this kind of thing. people trust brands and beauticians bc they feel like if someone is a beautician, that they know what theyre doing, and that SHOULD be the case, but unfortunately, not always. i feel like a lot of the people who do these shady injections for filler, botox, tanning, anything should be charged for impersonating a professional, because people have faith in professionals to know what they are doing is safe, and i dont blame them.

I loved tanning outside growing up. It was always so relaxing to me and I always thought I looked better with a tan. In high school after I turned 18 decided I wanted a tanning membership and would go frequently. I absolutely became addicted and was under false impressions of the “benefits” tanning would provide. I stopped for a while cause of price, but then got back into it when my gym offered tanning. Then one day something clicked and I actually became terrified of tanning in the bed anymore. Realizing that cancer (not skin but other) is prevalent in my family and I’m fair skinned with lots of moles, I decided it’s not worth the risk. More and more as I get older (I’m 25 now) I appreciate my natural skin and want to respect it. Life’s too short to stress about something so silly 😌

I used to have a friend who was diagnosed with lupus and almost immediately started tanning cause someone had told her it would help, even when I tried to tell her that didn't seem right she was already convinced. I’m gonna be honest that I was tempted by these. I have chronic illness so I’m often anemic and bedridden for days, weeks, or even months at a time. Like James and Robert, I have a white dad and a Mexican mom, so I have olive skin. When I’m living my normal healthier life, I have tan skin. When I’m very sick I’m very pale, I get a lot of (well meaning but hurtful) comments about it. I’ve tried spray tans and I hate them, tanning beds aren’t available here in Mexico, so I just sit in the sun for a few minutes (wearing sunscreen) when I’m able to (lately that’s maybe five minutes once a week). Thank you for this video, I don’t need more health problems.

As a non-white person, paleness in my culture=beauty because it meant you weren't doing menial labor. In America, tanning is expensive and makes you look like you've been lounging on the beach = not doing menial labor. Both of them mean the same thing, but they go about it different ways. Beauty is so arbitrary. I get where you're coming from, since my culture warned me against looking dark or else I'd look like the aboriginal people, which was, apparently, and undesirable look.

Growing up as a pale girl with acne with skin that loves to burn, I often heard constantly growing up in the 90s and early 2000s that tan skin would help with acne. As someone who knew the importance of sunscreen and impact of sun damage due to family, I tried to explain to others that wasn't the case, but eventually gave up because they just wouldn't believe me. But it was so common to hear repeated. Edit: As someone who grew up pale, I used to get mocked a lot in middle school and high school. I still get asked if i am sick into adulthood at times.I wouldn't say it stopped me from living life, but i was shamed a lot for it doe I didn't live up to a tan beauty standard. I don't care now, I only share because you mentioned it. I went to a private school in the south where all the other girls could afford to go on vacations or get spray tans, just augmented it. So yes, being mocked for being pale when i went to school happened more than one would think.

As someone who was a kid in the 80's, the height of being "sun-kissed" & very little warnings of the damage the sun does. I remember covering myself in vegetable oil and laying on sheets of aluminum foil from 10 am to 2 pm every day in the summer. Then off to the beach or town pool with my friends. I did that for years! When I was old enough to use a tanning bed I was hooked! I went every day first thing in the morning, I thought it helped start my day and gave me a "glow". Then another salon opened in my town and i went twice a day for 3 years. Fast forward to the 2000's and I did one of those sun image pictures to see the damage that it had done to my skin...i was SHOCKED! It was so damaged and not easily fixed. The only thing i could do was to avoid sun exposure and wear sunscreen like i used to wear that stupid vegetable oil. Now at 50 yrs old my skin looks like I'm in my 80's and has a leathery texture to it. I'm also having moles removed and tested every other month, all have been benign (Thank God) but the worry & anxiety is horrendous. My dr says I've been extremely lucky to not have had any bad ones, yet. I know its coming though, i just hope its at least 15 yrs down the road. I love my grandbabies and want to be apart of their lives and i dont want them to miss out on "Mimi time" at least while theyre so little. Again, with the worry & anxiety. If you haven't tanned don't start! Please! It's not worth it. The damage done is irreversible & irreparable. Besides you are already BEAUTIFUL ♥ To anyone reading this please take my advice & my words to heart. It's not worth your life to be bronzed/tan/sun-kissed or whatever you're going after.

Honestly agree about the gym, it gives you that boost of confidence! Also using a gradual tinted body moisturiser instead. It doesn’t take any extra time if you already moisturise your body after you shower every day and is a lil self care routine that feels nice. It doesn’t look too exaggerated or orange and doesn’t have the smell. I use one that is the same tone as my skin (I’m naturally olive) and it just gives me that subtle evenness without looking patchy or weird!

About what you said about not understanding why it would be illegal to sell but not to own and use, and thinking both should be illegal to stop it, it's actually the same as with many drugs : making the simple owning and using illegal has proven not to be a good public health method to decrease drug use. People will still try them and become addicts and then want more no matter if it's legal or not. Decriminalising drug use, if paired with prevention and health policies around it, has proven way more efficient to globally reduce drug use in a country (see Netherlands and Portugal as examples). Also repressing drug use costs money (arresting people, reviewing their cases etc) and that money is again better spent doing prevention and healing people ! Obviously drug use still should be an aggravating circumstance in other stuff (like car accidents), but overall it's better not to penalize "simple" users and advocating for harm reduction and public health measures, yet keeping selling this stuff illegal... Hence the difference. In short, it's about going from a crime policy to a public health policy.

When I was 15, I had to stop spending any time in the sun because I started getting really tired and nauseated if I was out in the sun for more than 10 minutes. Never managed to find a reason for it, tested negative for porferia. If your job requires you to be outside, you can look into upf clothing to wear for sun protection because sunscreen isn’t a 100% effective especially for very long periods of time. But if you’re using sunscreen and taking precautions from sun exposure where you reasonably can, then don’t worry about it. Talk to a dermatologist for education from an actual physician to get balanced information. I love the skinfluencer community, but there is an aspect of sun obsession that is a bit too far. This video is mainly focusing on the dangerous habits people are partaking in all for a tan.

I remember reading somewhere at a certain point that just like how the sun can make you feel good so can sunbeds. Because the concentrated uv rays release endorphins in our system as well. Combine that with how it does help things like acne and in a culture where darker skin is the ideal helps you meat those ideals. It’s basically three things at once to create a dependency
