@@SophiaAphrodite The Money Pit extended its thin premise fairly well and that light remake of One Red Shoe has its moments (my family and I even saw Dabney Coleman signing autographs on set in DC) but is much too slight and silly to top Burbs.

No it isn't. It was extremely popular - which is how it became one of my very favorite movies as a kid in the 80s. People need to stop using the word "underrated" for popular mainstream entertainment. It literally makes no sense and that word has pretty much lost all meaning because of it. At this point, underrated is better defined as: "Something cool that happened back in the day - and Gen Z just now found out about it." Lmfao I literally saw someone call The Beatles underrated the other day. ...the most famous band of all time.

One of my favorites, too, although the ending kinda loses me. I wish they had reversed it and made the “weird” neighbors just weird, but not evil, and made Tom Hanks and his friends the “bad guys”, but maybe they have a barbecue or something and get along in the end lol
@timothypolanco8622
@timothypolanco8622 8 ай бұрын
@@schitzoclown True, but it's like what hader was saying. It felt like they were just going along to what they thought was funny at the moment with each scene, and they probably wanna to have their cake & eat it too. Because those scenes prior to the reveal did felt like the movie was coming to end with the neighbor's being crazy. But then the revealed gave them a new ending without losing the main point that these people at the burbs are still really fucking crazy 💯🤣

I wouldn't expect him to have headlined movies, but he should have been in a lot more stuff in the side-kick, buddy, annoying neighbor roles. One of the things I love about it is, for all the comedy that's in it, they somehow successfully allow it to be kind of a horror movie as well. The atmosphere of what's going is genuinely spooky, like the scene where Art tells the story of Skip (one of my favorite scenes ever). Instead of a comedy that parodies horror movies, it's more like they took comedic characters and put them in a genuine horror movie and it manages to balance perfectly.
@travisbickle2004

I completely agree. The opening of the movie is especially brilliant, the way the score changes as the camera zooms in to earth from space, all the way to the ‘burbs, and continues to change as each character is introduced, the music kind of reflecting the personality of each character, it’s really well done and very memorable to me. I love that even Queenie the dog has her own bark themed music as she’s introduced. Little things like that add to why the movie is so much fun.

The way Brother Theodore says "ALL DAY" is one of the greatest line readings in the history of anything. And Tom Hanks gives one of his best performances because of the million little nuances in his gestures and expressions the entire film. I have a summer birthday, so sleepover birthday parties were my go to. There was a formula to them, from age 7 to 13, we’d go to a movie in the theater, see something like Congo or Ace Ventura When Nature Calls. But, the highlight every year was when we got back, the pizza would show up, and we’d put in the recorded from HBO VHS copy of The ‘Burbs. We watched it every year and we loved it. We use to quote it as we watched it, not a summer would go by without a room full of my friends yelling “Yo Rumsfield” in sync with Corey Feldman before Bruce Dern fell off his room. This movie was a huge part of my childhood and there is an instant connection with anyone once I find out that they’re also a fan of it.

When we were kids, my dad rented a vcr and a couple movies, including the Burbs. My sister and I laughed our asses off the entire time. When the movie was over, we literally rewound it and watched it again. Total classic. Those were the days.

The scene where Tom Hanks slides down the steps is so ingrained in my mind that I regularly have dreams I slide down whole flights of stairs, but it's not a big deal, it's just how I do it. It wasn't until I was talking to someone about our dreams that I realized I had never actually done it in real life, but I had done it so often in my dreams that it seemed like I had.

I could have written your post without changing a word. Not joking. I have had so many dreams where I slide down entire flights of steps in my dreams in exactly the way you describe that it feels like a *real* experience. While in the dream I fool myself I’m not dreaming and I always think “oh I DO know how to slide down flights of steps like this, it’s not a dream!” and then I wake up and realize it was another one of those dreams. Very cool to read your post. I love this movie so much.

“Shut up and paint your goddamn house!” “There go the goddamn brownies!” “Let’s cut all this polite crap. What’s the weird goddamn noise you got coming outta the cellar.” “Hey, man! Piss off!” Bruce Dern had the best lines in the flick. And Jerry Goldsmith’s score is top-notch for a screwball comedy.

The 'Burbs is epic....loved it from day one....but still obscure enough that only die hards are into it. When ever one of my friends (who is also a fan) and I see each other somewhere, it's always a flurry of 'Burbs quotes....much to a sea of blank stares from everyone else. I love the Burbs. I still watch it once or twice a year. I always usually watch it to kick off the summer. It's definitely not for everyone but those who love it really love it. I also grew up in a suburban cul-de-sac neighborhood kind of like the movie where everyone knew and watched everyone else and we had a weird family on the block who never talked to anybody and barely kept up with their yard. So they were our version of the Klopeks except they turned out to be law obeying citizens(as far as we know) just weird and anti social. Lol Everyone is so perfect in their roles. It is a perfect lazy day hangout movie with comedy and mystery and suspense. They just don't make movies like this anymore that are just silly and fun and quotable.

Saw it in the theater with my mom. Back in the day when the only way to see new movies was in the theater. And you would go to school on Monday and talk about it with all your friends who happened to go and do the same thing with their family. And if they didn’t catch it that first opening weekend then they probably went the following weekend because everyone was talking about it. Man.....how times have changed.

Fun fact: The 'Burbs had just started filming when the 1988 writers' strike occurred. A lot of big creative decisions were made by both cast and crew on a daily basis.

So in other words: The Burbs didn't pause production during the strike, in an expression of contempt by the producers and director, like Ryan Murphy et al. during the recent writers' strike. Tom Hanks, man of the people, Fun Fact™️!

If a script is written then the script is written. The writer can be on strike and their script is still finished. Cast and crew often improvise during filming, they don’t stop being creative if the screenwriter isn’t there.

The music and sound design in this movie is just great. Bruce Dern’s heavy metal intro, the overall theme of the movie, the sneezing sound of Tom Hanks, Tom at the breakfast table waving his arms around matching the cartoon sounds on the TV in the background, etc. just awesome detailed stuff you don’t see anymore. Everyone in the movie plays it with an intensity and seriousness that is perfectly juxtaposed to the silliness of the situations. My favorite line is the super loud “NO!” that Reuben Klopek says to Rumsfeld in the brownie scene 😂. “It came vith de frrrame”. “Hans. Christian Anderson; what are ya catholic?” So many hilarious things. The movie is still one of my favorites. The whole score is on KZbin, it’s definitely worth a listen

This is crazy, me and my best friend did the same stuff watching this movie. Bill Hader lists all these great moments in the movie and didn't even mention Rick Ducommun - who is absolutely genius in it. When he convinces Tom Hanks that he's chanting, cracks me up every time. My friend even uses the moniker Hair Klopek on social media to this day. The Burbs is right there with What About Bob? all time great movies I'll never get sick of watching.
