Jack Burton is peak Kurt Russell. Kurt is great in every role he's done especially when he's working with John Carpenter but as Jack Burton, Kurt is dripping with swagger and chewing the scenery all while playing an incompetent fool. The chasm between who Jack Burton thinks he is versus who everyone else sees him as is comedy gold! This movie is completely chocked full of great quotable lines from start to finish. I would love for JC and KR to film a sequel where Jack Burton has an adventure that takes him across China. Call it.. 'New Trouble in Old China: Jack Burton Rides Again! '

I think the performers and crew put more effort in and it shows too when they really love a project. I would extend that to the likes of spaceballs and Blazing Saddles but if your movie is a comedy, full of comedic actors and comedians then of course it's going to be light-hearted all around. These movies had a bit of everything and they're not strictly comedies, neither are they full of comedians and comedic actors, it's special when we see it, it gives you a good feeling beyond that of seeing a movie you really like.

My favourite thing about this is that the commentaries for Escape From New York, The Thing and Big Trouble were all recorded on the same exact day at Carpenter’s home. Russell brought whisky and Carpenter had beers. Gradually, each commentary becomes more unhinged, as the two become more and more drunk and disorderly. It makes it so funny to me that essentially we’re hearing two old friends get drunk and reminisce about their youths.

I was 14 when this came out. Back then movies like Big Trouble, Highlander, Red Dawn, etc were all high cinema to me. It was a time when I was getting too old for Disney classics but couldn't get in to see restricted movies yet, so I and my friends would try to go to anything with a PG-13 rating because we knew we'd get to see action scenes like we had never seen before.

This movie never skips a beat, is funnier than 99% of comedies, and is extremely quotable. If I can't decide what to watch, this is my go-to if I want to be entertained, laugh, and just have a great time.

I will never forget the very first time I saw this movie. I was just a lil kid who had a huge love for cinema. I didn't even know that making a movie like this was even possible! And I sure as hell never expected so many elements from this flick to make their way directly into the debut of Mortal Kombat!!! What a time to be alive!!!!

I've read about the the film taking place in the 1880s originally, hearing Kurt talk about it adds another dimension to the mix. I must say, however, that I just cannot imagine this film being a western in any way ! I think John (and whoever else was involved with the script) made a very wise decision back then !

Personally I wouldn't mind having a bootleg copy of Big Trouble in Little China, from the alternate universe where they did go ahead and make it a Western. Just for curiosity's sake. It's on the list along, with a version of Star Wars where George Mifune got Toshiro Mifune for Obi-Wan Kenobi like he originally wanted or an R-rated Jurassic book that followed the Michael Crichton novel more closely.

Just found out this came out the day I left home for basic training (seems somehow fitting although there was nothing funny about Ft. Jackson, SC in July and August). Saw it the first time on cable several years later and thought it was older than it actually was and wondered how I had missed it. Fantastic matinee fun at home in the recliner on your day off; love both these guys and their art.

I ran this as a projectionist for quite a few of weeks, and I always kept the monitor volume up for this picture. It just kept getting funnier to me. Every time I'd be doing something else in the booth, and I'd hear, "Me, Jack Burton," I'd start to laugh. Maybe my favorite Jack Burton moment is at the airport, when the Asian guy pulls out a butterfly knife and flips it open, and Jack says, "Where'd you get that?"

It's epic to hear John Carpenter and Kurt Russell talk and laugh about this classic movie they made nearly 40 years ago 🤣 The fact it had to compete with movies like Aliens, Top Gun, Platoon, Labyrinth, Ferris Beuller's day off, Highlander, Crocodile Dundee and many others made in 1986 shows this was truly the golden age of movies.
