There was a military times article a few years ago that said through most of history around 30lbs was most kit weight for armies- practical as let’s say 96% of troops in world history had to march miles to the battlefield. Warriors with mobility (nobleclass samurai/knights) with horses never topped 50 lbs. Mechanized war brought about 60, 70, 80, 120, some cases high as 180 lbs kit and gear. There’s a reason us vets have joint issues. Even running steel plates I’m keeping combat load around 35. Great vid.

Look up a book called "The Infantry in Combat." It was written by a Colonel in 1948 after studying infantry engagements from Platoon to Division level across both world wars. His determination was that weight is the primary limiting factor in dismounted combat. He estimated that the individual rifleman should carry no more than 60 lbs on long range maneuvers, no more than 40 in the approach march, and no more than 30 as a fighting load in order to maximize combat effectiveness. That includes water, aid kit, weapon, boots, fatigues, and anything else. It's an excellent read and includes plenty of data and anecdotes from frontline troops and commanders. Highly recomended.

The only exercise I see them doing besides walking to and from their cars, is to walk outside to smoke. I'm 52, can squat over 400lbs, deadlift 500lbs, and do 5 mile ruck hikes with an Alice pack with 65lbs of sand. Will I carry that much weight? No, but if I can't maneuver with a plate carrier, gear, and a rifle, what good am I? Also, I train in hopes I never ever have to do it for real.

Years ago I read a book written by Colonel S LA Marshall titled ' Soldier's Load amd the Mobility of a Nation ' . The book has been described as a case against overloading infantrymen by senior commanders . The book is currently available online for ten bucks . I reccomend everybody buy a copy and read it a few times . The main takeaways I got from reading it is that the soldiers that assaulted Omaha and Utah beaches were encumbered with unnecessary gear , that in combat few soldiers used their combat load of ammo . and the few soldiers that did fire all their ammo resupplied from those who held fire or got pinned down . I've read the book ' Black Hawk Down ' by Mark Bowden a couple of times . The Rangers that fought in Mogadishu Somalia thought they were going on a quick. 'In and Out Mission' and didnt pack the necessary gear for a prolonged engagement . Once nighfall occurred they found themselves wanting for lack of NVGs and water .

So, in the professional side of the house the load is dictated by the mission. Direct Action guys will carry less ammo because they don't expect a protracted fight and they have resupply available. Foot mobile recon teams will carry more ammo but no armor plates, because they're doing a lot more walking than fighting and expect evac to be available. Line platoons will carry a double combat load plus a bandolier im their pack god knows how much ammo in the truck because they expect drawn out gunfights with a lot of suppressing fire. Of course, all of that is mission dependent and can change based on the situation. The issue for the modern militia is that there is no resupply and you only get to use what you can carry. So you have to figure out what you're most likely to do. If you are likely to be doing a 10 month recreation of Stalingrad then full body armor, helmet, and 15 magazines is probably the right answer. If you're going to be doing a lot of walking through woods and reconning points of interest, then maybe a chest rig is the best option. If you know you'll have vehicles then have a duffel with extra gear and ammo. If you're counting on the old leather personnel carriers then invest in a good rucksack. Bottom line: look at your mission, look at your capabilities, and determine your equipment needs. Maybe your guideline is to carry as little weight as possible to stay mobile. Maybe it's to take and hold a position for as long as possible. The mission and therefore equipment will depend on the situation. There is no one-size-fits-all solution.

@@irishsavage8715 Very true, but you still have X amount on you based on your needs and personal mission. lighter weight tends to be better overall as the weight will add up fast. be it baby stuff or ammo ;-) if you can keep heavier stuff in a veh and have access to a veh, that's a great way to 'have more' and not have to hump it around all the time. even mechanized, you are not always around or in your veh. but if/when you are, that is another set of tactics and options. who else is in the car? can you just drive away? do you know where your bullets will deflect to when shooting through the front window? can you get out of the veh fast? carry-gun vs pulling out (if you can) the car/truck-gun (usually larger) just to name a few.

I really enjoyed your video, as with other videos of yours. My main problem with weight is my back. I have a severe scoliosis. I am fit though. I used to ride 450 miles per week solo on a bicycle to keep in shape. Not on flat roads either. Now I only put a couple of hoers per day in just to maintain. Given my back doesn't allow me to lift much weight with my upper body, I found a way to get fit that my body allows me to do. Since most of my rides have been solo, my legs are well developed. I remember one of my weight lifting friends challenged me to see which of us could handle more weight on the leg extension machine. I thought he was kidding me. He was 250 pounds of solid muscle. I went ahead and took him up on the challenge and surprisingly, the legs attached to my 145 pound frame brought the challenge to a draw. We had the whole stack, all the plates that could be added, plus one 200 lb. guy standing on the stack and we had no way to add any more weight. That came to about 750 pounds. Funny thing is after seeing how that challenge turned out, people at the gym wanted to see us arm wrestle. Once again I thought that was ridiculous, but I went ahead and took them up on it as to not appear to be chicken. Well, long story short, once I got to know him, he kept trying to beat me but never did. More times than not, it came to a draw, but I did manage to beat him and he never beat me. This may seem irrelevant to the subject at hand, but all I'm trying to convey here is that even if we have physical problems, or medical problems, we all can usually find a way to overcome the obstacles thrown before us. Every part of the body that I can train is trained, but there's nothing I can do about my back. For that reason, I put a lot of the weight I carry on my cummerbund rather than on a plate carrier or chest rig. That's not to say that I don't use a chest rig, but a plate carrier simply would be too much weight for my back. I often end up using a trekking pole to rest my back when I bring my gear. I'll be turning 58 in October and still keep fit. I've also been a type 1 diabetic for over 55 years now, but I've always managed it well so that isn't even an issue with me. To any fellow diabetics out there, diabetes is only a small inconvenience and there's no excuse for not managing it. To anyone else who feels that they can't be of much use as a minute man, there are ways of overcoming challenges that we're faced with. We simply have to take the bull by the horns and accept the challenge. There's a certain sense of pride that can be taken from having done whatever you can to be as useful as you can regardless of any challenges you're faced with. Just my two cents. Thanks for sharing this informative video.

@@TacticalResponseCrew Is there a particular one you feel I should focus on? I'm very familiar with barbell training. I know I can still do preacher curls and other similar exercises that don't put a strain on my back. I also get a good core workout while cycling. Many don't know that when using proper form while cycling, one pulls on the pedals as well as pushing. After hoers of this, I get better results for my ab's than I ever did by doing crunches, sit ups or any other form of ab exercises. I also find that cycling puts a whole lot less stress on my back as well, plus I gain a whole lot more endurance than when I used weights. I'll admit that I'm more into cardio fitness these days than just strength fitness. That's not to say that either one isn't at all important, I just benefit more from cycling, and rather than risk an injury to my already severely compromised back it's probably wise for me to avoid any exercise that puts a strain on my back. When I used to hit the weights, I used to weigh 155 lbs. at my heaviest. At that weight I was working out my arms with 80 pound dumbbells, 3 sets of 8 using strict form. I never allowed the weights to swing or bounce like many do. At that time, I didn't know that I had a severe scoliosis. I just thought the pain I was feeling was being felt by others in the weight room as well. I thought I was just wimping out if I didn't just deal with the pain. Who knows how much damage I caused to my back as a result of that. One thing I can say is there is a silver lining in having dealt with all that pain. It taught me to push myself much further than anyone I ever met. These days I just concentrate more on cardio. Having lived with diabetes from the age of 2 (over 55 years) with no diabetic onset health issues is a testament to how much diabetics have to gain by getting fit. My A1c remains between 5.4 and 5.6. I used to keep it even lower but was experiencing way too many hypoglycemia's. This should tell any diabetic's reading this that they can control their A1q and even be healthier than 99% of the population if they simply take charge of their condition. I'm nothing special; I just enjoy living too much to not take care of myself. Anyway, I'll watch those Barbell Logic podcasts. Any additional knowledge can't hurt.

Strength and conditioning is foundational to being ready, willing and able to fight. If you NEED a weapon to fight with you are a tool. If you don't, you are the weapon and the gun is the tool.
@malcolmmacgregor77544 жыл бұрын
@Cain Morano Yes, to a point. I mean, you will always be more mobile if you are stronger. You will always be more mobile with lighter gear. It comes down to a min/max equation where you are trying to maximize conditioning and minimize weight *without compromising performance of the gear*. If you can get good gear and save big on weight, do it. But, when reducing weight in gear keep in mind what you may be giving up and ask if it's worth it. For instance I won't switch to a lighter optic, just because it's 6 oz lighter than my AimPoint (or an ACOG), because those optics are proven to take the abuse put on them in battle, and lesser optics have proven to fail. Is it worth giving up night vision capability to save 10 ounces by not taking a PVS-14? Not in my book. NV is such a force multiplier that NV is one of the last things I'd ditch (I'd literally ditch my armor first). My thinking is to not compromise on your fighting gear. Figure out what you need, and it weighs what it weighs. You CAN cut significant weight by buying better gear which is often lighter. For instance my Arc'Teryx Kyber 80 weighs 4.25 pounds, whereas the ILBE main pack has the same capacity and weighs 9 pounds. Often you can find pouches and such by better manufacturers using lighter materials, but at a higher price. You can also cut your snivel gear. What you want to bring to establish (and leave at) a base camp is very different from what you want to hump on patrol. For instance, you really don't need a hygiene kit for a 4 day patrol. Your teeth won't rot out in that time, and you (and your breath) are going to stink anyway. So, as you lighten your gear as situation and budget allow, work on your conditioning as well, and you're well above the curve, so to speak.

Who are these people he keeps needed to explain base concepts to? To the ones hes having to explain super basic things to, you probably don't have the mental capacity to properly handle firearms. ( I'm only talking about the people that I guess are hyper focused on the info and requires him to say don't focus on the exact number. If you watching this for the info. I'm not asking and you.)

This is why I prefer to train with no plates. I will definitely carry plates if it's advantageous of course. End of the day, it all depends on the person's ability and the objective.

You SHOULD train with plates

A Marine veteran mad a rebuttal to Yeager's statement "Nobody has ever come out of a gunfight exclaiming "Gee! I wish I didn't bring all this extra ammo to the fight!" Marines response: "When was the last time you had to hump 2000 rounds of ammo up the mountains of Afghanistan?We reported fake contacts just to get ride of some of the stuff!"

I've had a broken magpul ak mag thats worked for years at this point. I've had metal ak mags that have broken well beyond functional after only a year (good brand new metal mags) the pmags are dope af not just the metal reinforced ones the plan Jane ak pmags the only reason the one mentioned above is broken is because I PURPOSELY broke it and its going hard every Saturday for a few hours 30 rounds at a time and being thrown around. Honestly there ain't much that can beat them and I've had every AK mag period. There's no reason to even buy the $26 metal reinforced ak pmag Honestly.
