una voce potentissima e sicura in tutti i registri 🥰

For those who say this is screaming, it isn't. Her voice is just too big for the KZbin audio to handle gracefully. I heard this in the house (meaning The Metropolitan Opera House) and there was no screaming involved.

A voice cannot be too big for KZbin… imagine a recording, which basically records every little sound… is her voice “too big” for a recording as well?

Jaime Barton was electrifying. Particularly in her final aria. Such power, such emotion. Absolutely beautiful yet sad. And she is a lovely young women (saw her interviewed). Also, solved the "eye patch" question.

Perhaps you prefer Tatiana Troyanos or Shirley Verrett, but both of those ladies have left us and even were they still alive they would not be singing opera anymore. Jamie Barton has the vocal goods for these dramatic mezzo-soprano parts in a way that practically no singers today do. She has a big voice and she has learned how to use it rather than putting a lid on it. Big voices are hard to tame and sometimes hers gets a little out of control, but she actually can sing pianissimo as well as fill the opera house and then some.

@melissastoudenheimer :: You are very lucky to have heard JB in the theater ! In my humble opinion, though, MH doesn't have that bottomless, deep cavernous, reverberating sound as JB ; and JB doesn't have MH's vocal-virtuosity.

Ah, memories of Fiorenza Cossotto, whom this person seems to be making some effort to imitate. But a distinction must be made between a voice of tremendous power and penetration and, well, screaming. The screamers tend not to scream for long.

You have no clue what you’re talking about if you believe she’s a “screamer”. I’ve been hearing her since she was 18 yo, a Freshman in college. I know her teachers and the technique they teach. None of them subscribe to the scream technique. Try again.

@@dbrel Let’s change the verb. When you apply excessive breath pressure to a tone that has the basic sound of an old chevy attempting to start up, you get bleating as the result.

@@dbrel ■ save your typing skills ! not only is R.C. clueless ... he claims J.B. is imitating F.C. F.C. never ! never had that kind of power in the lower-register of her voice ; F.C., also never had that smooth, powerful upper-voice as J.B. OK ! some people may not like the incredible chest-voice of Jamie Barton ... but there are many more who do. you seem to know, not only J.B., but her teacher (s) as well ... & they must have been from the "Old School". the vocal impact of Barton's voice is phenomenal. she is the kind of mezzo-soprano / contralto who makes you forget the soprano ! even if that soprano is M.C. ! One of the very few singers regarding today’s operatic scene. The person cast as Elisabeth and the one(I do not even wanna mention nor think about her.) who was scheduled to sing it next year in the italian version as well as the one portraying the title role are thoroughly horrible and they do not even deserve to be called “singers”.
@PrinceOberon872 жыл бұрын
Awful. it's just bland and emotionless schreeching. Certainly not a role she should be singing. Tatiana Troyanos remains the ideal Eboli

It's mannered and choppy. The French instead of Italian doesn't help. But NOBODY can top Troyanos. Verrett was every bit of a musician though and a beautiful voice to match. Troyanos and Verrett are the tops. Blended musicianship and acting..

@@dbrelisn’t it interesting that no one makes comments about any mezzo before the 1980s. I heard Cossotto in 1972 (with Corelli and Tucci) and she blew the back wall out of the Met. Of course volume isn’t everything, but the sheer amplitude of her tone combined with its titanic size made an impact I’ll never forget. She and Obratsova were two of the biggest voices I ever heard. There HAVE been excellent Ebolis since then, including TT (NOT ideal however in spite of MANY performances and great high notes; she had a peculiar, buzzy, non-Italianate sound), GB, SV, and DZ. I think JB is quite excellent here. If people think it’s screaming their perception is off. This is full-throated, non-forced, pitch and head register-dominant singing totally anchored to the chest voice. Ideal combo. I agree that it IS probably an audio issue which couldn’t handle the final phrase with the high Bb. She did sing it all in one breath. I’ve heard many peculiar breaths and different syllabifications of that phrase from Italian performances over the years!
