Issues with England’s defence will stop Gareth Southgate's team winning Euro 2024, according to Telegraph columnist Jamie Carragher.
The former England and Liverpool defender has made his predictions on how the tournament will pan out, using Telegraph Sport’s interactive predictor - which you can play for yourself here: www.telegraph.co.uk/football/...
He said England’s defenders could struggle against the best attacking players in the tournament.
“I do look at us defensively… and I think, can that win a tournament?” he said.
“They're all top players, no doubt about that. But when you talk about the absolute elite, I don't think we've got many elite defenders that I'd be confident going up against the absolute best attacking players in this tournament.”

I don’t care who the manager is, but they have to build a team that works for each other, if Greece and Iceland can win it and England fail it says there is something wrong with the managers we pick and who the selectors are appointing, until the old men at the FA are dead and buried i can’t see England winning anything. Look at managers who have proven they can install defensive discipline with attacking flair and I can’t think of one English manager who has achieved this successfully and consistently.

I think Jamie carragher is a bit harsh on himself, from italia 90 till 2004 14 years , England 's defenders have always performed , from sol chambell , tony adams, rio Ferdinand, terry, jamie himself , England have taken almost every team to penalties . They deserve zero blame .

I feel like the English media is, once again, setting us up for failure with their delusional expectations. While, of course, England will need to win the tournament in order to feel like they're making progress, this England team just aren't well-rounded enough to be considered favourites. But even if they were the best team, one shouldn't expect them to win considering the history of the tournament: the winners of the euro's are seldom the team that everyone expects.
