no need to change the tires. put a full coverage skid plate under the motor and loose all the weight you can from the bike. there's guys that do water-cross all the time.

+eurenton99 .... Up to a point. Get them big and they will span the water, and no longer ride the surface ruining the experiment. Larger, and they block the sun, screwing up weather patterns across the globe. Even larger, and it would screw up the mechanics of the solar system making the weather even worse. Eventually, it would crowd out of the galaxies and trigger a cascade of stellar nucleosynthesis. The mass of these complexes would collapse into a black holes and converge plunging the Universe into an existence where all matter exists as a singularity in the simplest possible thermodynamic state. The worst possible outcome for all sentient life and basically ruining everything for everyone for all time.

Hazardous-Nebula they do make amphibious paddle tires for dirt bikes sand paddles would be a bad choice for water as well as raised fork ski's for the front so you can ride from land to water and vise versa. may cost more but they are specialty items.

Those 2 strokes are pretty easy to get water out of. He could of hydro locked the piston and bent a rod but more then likely it just needs to be cleaned out and put some fresh oil in the crank case and it should be fine. 4 strokes are a whole different story tho.

You don't have enough dispacement with the wheels. The paddle tires act as rows and a smooth sand tire in front will help reduce drag in the front.. Totally possible if you have the right stuff on the bike.. I would like to see this done right a second time.

I've seen people do this in snowmobiles in the winter over like 50 ft patches of open water, so yeah, no doubt in my mind you could cross a small body of water in a dirtbike if you were going fast enough.

It's called watercross, and you can go for hundreds and hundreds of meters with snowmobile on open water.

different operating principles. the bike depends on hydroplaning, essentially pulling air under it quickly enough to keep it off the water. once it's on the water, it's relying on momentum to move forward a snowmobile is more like a tiny paddle boat. the treads actually push water, allowing the snowmobile to remain under its own power.

If they used a 4 stroke since it has better torque and a set of sand tires it would've been no problem.

The problem was clearly not the torque but the power (for these wheel conditions).And btw : a 4 stroke is heavier at the same power so it need more force (so more power) to have the same acceleration and if the torque was the problem, you can just change the sprocket on the 2 stroke.So no, 4 stoke is not the solution

With some better tires, they may have been able to go farther. Those knobby tires aren't right. You would want a smooth, almost highway tread in front and a lug tread in back

This is to do with hitting the water fast enough for it to act more like a solid than a liquid allowing you to drive over the surface. The key is speed and surface area. The faster you go the more you'll be pushed up by the water, the more surface area you have the less speed you ideally need (more contact with the water to push against).

You can do it with snowmobiles as well. People get killed trying it all the time. Just as in this example without enough speed one sinks........ Into icy water and die in about 10 minutes after they lose the ability to swim.

The freestyle guys did this stuff back in the early Crusty Demons of Dirt videos in the mid 90's, and they were likely running paddles since they were dune riding at the time. Regardless.. badass!

ALL that was needed for this to work was that back tire to be a paddle tire. Sand tires front and back, would give the necessary power application to the water to keep the bike moving while decreasing the drag of the front tire. Once the bike drops below 50-60mph it's over.

Not enough water thrust for a steady-state cruise on such thin tires. A regular cycle with fatter tires would have planed better, too; or a 2WD cycle might have done better than a simple RWD bike. Specially adapted cars with vaned tires have done this better, and a snowmobile covered 131 miles on a (non-frozen) river in Norway.

What if the rims had a big wide flat lip perpendicular to the rim if you can picture that yes the forks and swingarm would have to e wider but that is easy so in other words as the tires begin to submerge there is a second wider surface to plane accross the water and actually with the front wheel it might even be okay or better to lock up the brake ....hey what if the front tire were ultra narrow like a bicycle racing tire so it just actls like a rudder immediately the flanges are what is planing on the water? What if the back tire is a sand paddle tire? The idea is to maintain acceleration maybe the loss of acceleration is what finally sinks the bike? Ohh and last epiphany? a REALLY low skid plate shaped like a ski! maybe it could even be lowered just after contacting the water to place some of the planing surface down there asap before anything has a chance to sink in? I KNOW there has to be a way to make it work! It just needs someone to keep trying more than simply riding a standard dirtbike onto the water that obviously can only get one so far

Sleds, dirt bikes , atvs. Simple drain the water from the motor, pull the plugs kick it over tell there's only gas in the cylinders and she's good to go
