I am a new stylist and i assisted two girls in my salon through school and still assist them when I’m not with my own clients and let me tell you...you guys sound just like me and my bosses. Haha! Speaking as an assistant, the relationship you have with her is so valued. I can’t thank my bosses enough for the things they’ve taught and continue to teach me (even down to self employment taxes). Thank you for passing on your legacy! Now, it’ll be up to girls like your assistant and i to build upon that legacy, personalize it, and then pass it along one day too. 💕

I love this. I wish that when I started out in a salon I felt I was growing & learning. I quit after a year and haven't bothered to look into it again. I sure do miss it but its honestly hard to find anyone in my area that wants to take the time to educate as well.

So helpful!! Thank you! The only little piece of info I was wondering about is what commission percentage you have your assistant at when she does her own clients?
@mightymusic646 жыл бұрын
I used to be an assistant and i think it’s wrong to not tip them out. We are doing your glosses base breaks and sometimes full blowdrys which you get all the commission and money for. When i would do a full blow dry for my boss and she made 25 dollars on the one blow dry that i did and then didn’t tip me out... that’s wrong. Even as assistants our paychecks and tips should reflect the amount of work we do
@JamieDana6 жыл бұрын
jessica watts Thanks for your thoughts. I was an assistant too and remember that all too well. I do tip her out sometimes, but it wasn't something she expected. It was a bonus.This is what has worked for my business and for what I offer to my assistants.
@CourtneyBStylisteducation6 жыл бұрын
She did give her a good bonus for Christmas as she said. And the education she’s learning essentially for free is priceless. Clearly she’s taking care of her assistants. I think it always depends on the situation 😊.
@homeschool.pray.repeat6 жыл бұрын
Something to think about...your boss takes on more risk and expense, plus she’s expanding your knowledge and experience. I guarantee that $25 wasn’t full profit for her.

im an assistant and i think that this is a unique situation, theres only one stylist in the salon who is paying someone an hourly rate. This stylist is their employer, if there were other stylists in the salon and the assistant did work for them then they should be tipping out the assistant since they arent paying them an hourly wage
@josdamillio6 жыл бұрын
My thoughts are that your getting a paid “internship”. You get paid hourly plus tips. You’re getting paid to learn and in return you’re helping them and making them more money so they’re able to double book or move more quickly/effectively. Sadly I only got paid 7.25 an hour and there were no raises so she’s def making out!!! We all start at the bottom and make our way up, and it makes it that much more sweet when you get there😊

I have been pondering on having an assistant. I have booth renters in my salon. Do you have her set up as an “employee” or do you 1099 her. I hope the question isn’t to personal. But starting with an employee makes me nervous with all the fees and all that you need to set up.

@JamieDana * I so would love to work with you Jamie! It would be amazing to be your assistant for a while or even if my fellow friends who are stylist and myself learn more from you! Do you offer classes on the east coast any? I now own my own hair salon!!! :))) But, I would still love to work together & travel to help you teach and me train to teach also and assist!! lol Enjoy learning from you and all of your videos. Just want to say thank you so much for them! Can't wait til' the next one! And maybe you could have a video of how to start a hair/salon/life KZbin channel and what type of video editing you would suggest and also which salon program you use for client information and formulas? Do you have certain papers for them to sign? What do you think would be best. I am a solo artist so I am managing everything I do myself for now. I'm sure I'll need an assistant eventually bc it makes work life so much better, easier, and faster! Do you have any tips on making it easier or better for me? Also, do you have snapchat? Thank you jamie!!

Some of them do, it's completely up to the client, but a lot of them do!

So I tip my assistant daily based on what they do. The clients also tip but I would not make the amount of money I make or get the amount of clients in that I do without the help of an assistant. The client hires you as the artist, not the Assisatant, it should not be expected for the client to tip them, it’s nice when they do but it’s not something I think should be expected.
