I changed my oil last night and decided to pull battery and change a low beam that burnt out on the weekend and suddenly driving to work, low idle. Couldn't figure it out, didn't suspect unhooking the battery would have done anything but I found this video and decided to try it out. 2010 Rav 4 would idle low, shake, and feel like engine would die when coming to a complete stop. Had to replace battery 6 months ago and did not realize it can be fixed by relearning the idle. Such a simple fix. Worked right away. Awesome video! Thank you!

You are a life saver. I have Camry 2010 LE and the idle speed has been so low recently since last 6 months. Couple of times engine even shit off while picking up from red light. I was Soo upset but when I tried ur method it worked like a charm. Idle is perfectly stable at 700 even while AC on or off, in park or in drive while stopped. I have a 2002 Toyota Camry LE with a 2.4L engine. Recently replaced the catalytic converters (the long piece of exhaust underneath the car, comes after the headers/precat), and found the engine idle to still be a little rough but not as bad as it was when there was major backpressure restriction from the old cat converters. I gave this procedure a try and after having it in drive and the emergency brake on for a while (waiting until my fuel trim numbers evened out to their happy place, about 3-5 minutes; I put the car in PARK and disengaged the brake. I let it readjust fuel trims again. I went from a 19% LT Fuel trim to a 10% LT Fuel trim! Very impressed. I also help the engine speed steady at 3000rpm and it actually showed a lower LT Fuel trim value of 7%. Everything seems to be operating much more smoothly now. I should be seeing better gas mileage too, I imagine. THANKS A BUNCH!!!

Thank you so much. Just tried the procedure on my 2010 Corolla S. Rpm’s did not fluctuate through procedure. Stayed at 600 rpm. Thought it had failed. Turned car off and restarted and rpm’s went right to 750 and stayed there. Car not running normally. Had throttle bore cleaned twice and nothing happened. Works on 2011 Scion tC!! Rough idle wasn’t fixed by new plugs, cleaning the MAF, cleaning the throttle body, unplugging the ECM/battery for extended periods of time. I tried this simple method and it’s finally smooth and perfect. This “how to” has been asked so many times on so many forums and no one has ever found a solution. Thank you!

Let me know how it goes. There was immediate improvement but now I second guess whether it was coincidence or whether it actually helped clear up the worst of the idling. It occasionally will idle low (~500rpm), but doesn't get to 450 rpm or lower like I remember it doing in the past and quickly bumps back up to 600rpm. I've tried both two and three clicks to ignition on (turning over on the second and third time to ON) and neither one seemed to be better than the other. I mention this because I think this same user has another video where the number of times to ON was different than mentioned in this video. Fingers crossed!

Whether this worked or not, it wasn't a long term fix for me. The car still periodically dips down to 500 rpm. I've tried teaching the car the new idle right after moments when it's dropping low to no avail. I've even tried with accessories on and off as prescribed.

Well once you program the ECM for the idle it's fixed indefinitely but other things can affect it maybe you have a bad vacuum leak somewhere like a small one or maybe a clogged PCV valve or something along that line but something else is affecting your idle because once the computer learns it it's done until it loses power again

Holy cow, I was just about to start ripping apart my 2007 Matrix, but I decided to click on one more video. Glad I did! I figured the low idle had something to do with having disconnected the battery, but I wouldn't have guessed the solution was so easy. Just followed your procedure on our 2008 Corolla after replacing the battery. It worked perfectly, was idling at 400 RPM and almost died, now it idles at 800 RPM. A side benefit of the relearn is it has mellowed out the initial jerk or over sensitive throttle. Accelerating from a stop is MUCH smoother now. Thank you Sir!

Well this just saved me a huge load of stress. I just got a new battery and was about to change out the plugs and coils and clean the throttle body and maf sensor, but now it runs as good or better than it did before the battery change. Thanks.

Tried this on my daihatsu sirion (aka Toyota Passo). Was sceptical as I had been told the idle control valve was faulty, but it worked with the idle back to around 800 rather than 500 and nearly stalling. It's a manual transmission and I just started it and left it alone, I knew something was happening as the idle went up and down and then settled where it should be. Amazing!

Thank you so much, had my daughters battery changed out at A1 Battery about six months ago. It has been running like $#@& ever since, then it wouldn't start yesterday at the store. Had it towed to my home, had to change out the starter. To get to it I had to take out the battery, replaced it. It worked, started right up but would not idle. After checking all of the air hoses, then thinking may be the fuel filter which I found out is in the gas tank.Then I thought maybe I will just give some more rpms by turning the carberator screw. I then went to U- tube and saw your web page, I tried it and it worked. Runs like a new car, thanks again.

Have a 2007 Camry with the 2.4L and 179K miles. Just did a tune-up and I was running into this issue... this fix worked wonderfully! It still drops a bit if you are running everything (i.e. AC and headlights), so I will definitely also be cleaning the throttle body this weekend.

I had to change the starter and disconnected the battery and as you said, many people were saying to do what you have done EXCEPT, they turned the key OFF and ON Twice and THEN started the vehicle on the THIRD time. I did that about 7 times on my 2002 Toyota Solara with the 2.4 L engine had NO improvements. Once I watched your video, I went back out and did exactly what you said and it is running PERFECT now. YOUR VIDEO IS A MIRACLE!!!! For sometime now I have had problems with low idling on my 2006 Toyota Corolla. I thought I needed to buy a new sensor, but I decided instead to clean the sensor with CRC Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner. It really was not all that dirty. However, when I tried to start and run it the idling was really BAD, car kept killing on me. Then I remember seeing your video and I watched it again and I followed your instructions to the letter on your video on idle reset on a Toyota and now it runs just great and the idling is what it should be. Did not work first time. My fault, engine wasn't warm enough for "closed loop" operation. Drove around block twice, re-tried the method described, worked! 2006 Toyota 4Runner with 4.7l V-8, 201,000 miles, not equipped with IAC valve (100% throttle body controlled), variable valve timing; engine had very low idle and would stall (die) while backing and parking. Weather was dry and about 70 degrees F. I cleaned the throttle body afterwards, and idle went very high (about 2500 RPM); re-did the method a third time, and drove several times normally, now operating as it should.Good job, THANKS FOR POSTING THIS VID

Had to try twice because the first time my car wasn’t warm enough (Chicago winters...had to be patient). After the second time, it worked! As some previous comments have said, you’ll have to wait for about 10 minutes, although I noticed significant improvement after five minutes. This was on my 2006 Corolla. Thank you so much! My 2001 Avalon has 266K on it and runs great!! Started to have idling problems...Toyota guy said it would relearn after cleaning throttle box. It got better with time after they cleaned the throttle box...but was still "off". This simple fix cleared it up in minutes!!! Worked on my 2003 Toyota Tundra. Right at the 4 minute mark the idle increased. I let run an additional 4 minutes. Then shut it off. Started again and took it for a test drive. All good again.

Sometimes you do need to clean your throttle body plate or you IAC. In my case, it was the IAC which is located on the throttle body which connects to the air intake manifold. I have a 1998 Lexus Es300 and was having shifting issues and rough and low idles. It’s a notorious problem with my Es300 for their IAC valves to accumulate carbon deposits which prevent them from functioning properly. I went ahead and removed the whole air intake and the IAC magnetic sensor and sprayed some throttle body cleaning spray and let it soak. I let it dry up and before I assembled the air intake, I went ahead and also cleaned the mass air flow sensor for the heck of it, since it was already off. I assembled it back together and started it up and no more check engine light for me! This trick also works on my model of car and is a convenient and easy fix for rough idling toyota/lexus cars. My car has been running smooth ever since!

You are the man......thanks a bunch! Tb cleaning yesterday caused a 2000rpm idle and would only go down to 1600rpms when warm and 1000rpms in gear.. Had to hold brake to go under 30mph.. Lol... After undoing Neg Batt Cable and reseting ECU and then getting rig to temp i did the steps.. Now it idles at 650-660rpms in Park and 530-550rpms in gear! 2005 Toyota Sport Edition 4x4.... @@mrmax1984 the idle changed upon starting the engine which is the last step in the process described. Car start, engine go vroom, then it settled to its regular idle.

@@justicejane2429 I let mine idle through two cycles of the radiator cooling fan come on. Looks like it doesn't take that long. You can always try it and if not fixed, shut it off, cycle the key again twice, then re-start and try again.

I believe for manual transmissions you would just leave it in neutral because the computer is trying to learn how to idle at rest and with an automatic you idle in drive but with a stick you'd be in neutral. Hope that helps.

So I have a 2002 manual transmission and it just worked in neutral. No need to ride the clutch against the emergency break. The automatic transmission model needs to learn to idle against the drive pressure while goot on break, of that makes sense.

MANUAL 2015 Toyota Agya here. I did this after removing and deep cleaning my throttle body. It worked well but it took 20 minutes. So be patient guys! It works but clearly it can take longer than 5 minutes. Hope this helps. ❤

Worked for my 2004 Corolla Le. I had the battery replaced a few months ago. I was driving home and the car would rev up to 4000 rpm and stayed there when I was only going 45mph. I did this, went for a test drive at 70mph, and it worked great!

I promised my self if this work, I would subscribe. So the first thing I did after resetting my TOYOTA MATRIX 2010 idle is to subscribe as promised. It was bothering me for two years. It happened when I installed Car Starter. The idle was around 600 but then it kept going down. Before resetting it, the idel was between 400-500. It scared me because I recently installed a new alternator. I was getting crazy Ideas abt what if I have to replace the alternator again. But your video helped me breathe a sigh of relief. For some unknown reason, this procedure did not work for my 2006 Toyota Sienna. I tried it 3 times exactly as directed. From the comments below, this procedure does work. What worked for me was driving on the highway at and sometimes a little over 55 mph for about 5 miles. Getting to the highway, I stopped at 1 red light. When I got off the highway, I had to stop at a red light and idle worked fine. Before I took it out on the highway, idle was low and would shut off.

Trying this now. Been battling this issue with my 2018 Toyota CHR since a battery replacement last night. Bought a new battery, cleaned MAF sensor, checked fuses, the whole 9 yards. Hoping this works!

It's works for me. My 2005 RAV4 had battery and generator change. Couple days later engine die when stop in traffic light because idle speed was very low. After the Ideal Rest, it back to normal. Thanks.

Thank you it worked on my corolla. I prayed to God and hoped this would work and it did. I cleaned my maf sensor and throttle body and when i started her up the idle was crazy high. Now its normal

Sounds good, however what if the vehicle wont stay running at idle? 2003 Sequoia had a faulty alternator which was checked and confirmed. Replaced alternator and inital startup ran ok. the next time it was started it would not keep running unless the gas pedal was depressed to raise the idle speed. Can the same procedure be done while applying gas to keep it running?

Thank you for the clear instructions. checked out others but they did not mention the warm up or how long to wait. You can add the year "97'" v6 and it took 4 mins to lower the revs to normal. Perhaps a good title for this is Reset idle after changing battery. Thanks for your help! FYI I changed batteries many times before and never had this idle problem.

After turning the ignition to on for the second time should you turn it off again before starting the engine or just turn the key and start the engine. Secondly, is it necessary to keep your foot on the brake for 5 minutes whilst the car is resetting itself provided that a) the parking brake is holding the car and b) you stay in the car?

thanks for the great tip bro, also on a 03 corolla the aic has a little adjustment, if these little screws are moved out a bit, you could adjust it from there to gain minimun idle speed - there's also the idle speed screw attached to the cable on the tb with a little 5/16 nut you could adjust it too for perfect idle 👌
