Thanks for this. I too had the problem. First one "malfunctioned" then within two hours, a second unit malfunctioned. I called First Alert (800 number on the back) and was helped by customer service. They're sending me replacements. I had to pay $6.50 for each alarm (S&H). Easy Peasy. They have a 10 year warranty and mine are six years old.

I was fortunate that the builder gave us backups. After the original and the backup failed I called the Frist Alert. I gave them the model number and year of manufacture. I was so glad that they told me that they will be sending two replacements by UPS. It's a 10 year warranty and my house was built 7 years ago.

My friend sent me your video. I'm glad that it's just a malfunction and nothing life threatening. It started chirping at 6pm and I didn't have any batteries to replaced so went out got new ones and replaced it, still chirping. I reset it multiple times and still didn't work. Thought it was a battery issue. Went out to buy another one and still no change (wasted my money on batteries then). This went on for 3 hours until I saw your video and conclude it was a malfunction. Detached it from the ceiling and removed the battery. It was driving me nuts!

This technique didn't work on my first alert detector. The chirp codes listed on the bottom of this type alarm dictate what the chirps mean. My alarm was 3 chirps every minute meaning a malfunction and to replace the unit. It was new in 2012 and it's 2018. Funny how it just "goes bad" never being used, hardwired and checked with volt meter plus a fresh battery installed. Always something to cost consumers money from cheaply made products made in today's day and age.

Yes, I have the same issue. I even went through the extra actions of turning off the power supply at the box. I removed the power supply to the unit. I pressed the test button in an attempt to clear whatever error message there might be. Replaced the unit to the ceiling. Pressed the button again to make the alarm go off. It chirped 3 times instead of one. I turned on the power supply. Pressed the test button which sets off all of the alarms in the house. It stayed quiet for 10 minutes and then started up again. I am going to guess I need to replace the unit. It has been active in the house for 4 years. I thought these things lasted longer. My dog is so upset that he is finally an outdoor dog. He will not come into the house.

I have exact same model of smoke alarms in my homw. A few months ago, one started to chirp three times just like yours. I changed the battery but still the same. I order a new one from Amazon and solved the problem. Today, another unit started to chirp three times. I guess these detectors apparently have a life span. The most recent unit that is chirping is made in 2012 Jun 08. It looks like they need to be replaced every four years or so.

I found that after putting in a new 9 volt battery that it was still chirping. I then remembered that on this specific unit (I changed 3 batteries in. 3 units) that there was a corrosion leak on the negative contact. I then took a very sharp pocket knife and cleaned off the contact. I replaced the new battery and it stopped chirping and works well.

Mine say 6 quick chirps means I'm sexy, but I already knew that. On a more serious note, I got the 3 quick chirps with no indication of what it means on the back of the alarm. My experience tells me that if the unit is over 3 years old and you've cleaned it out with a vacuum or compressed air and it's still giving out those 3 quick chirps, the unit is malfunctioning needs to be replaced stat.

Bottom line: these alarms go bad, if you have issues and it's not a battery issue then replace the alarm. If you replace the battery, don't forget to reset the alarm, it's not always "just pushing the test button" (on some you have to press and hold for up to 3 seconds.)

How do you distinguish a chirp from a beep? Wanna hear a scary story? One day, a loud "chirp chirp chirp chirp chirp" (stops and repeats) while I was still sleeping. All windows were opened because it was really hot the night before. I said to myself (half asleep) - damn bird built a nest in the tree between me and my neighbor. After a few hour, I got up & closed the window. Loud "chirp chirp chirp chirp chirp" again, Oh, it's from the other window...so I go and closed that window. "Chirp chirp chirp chirp chirp" -- Oh shoot, it's coming from the hallway...its my smoke/CO alarm! Okay, i said to myself...now what does 5 chirps mean...found the box and instructions and it says 5 chirps is end of life! But my eyes glanced over the 4 chirps and I got really ALARMED! 4 chirps meant CO detected. Now, imagine this...the alarm does 4 chirps while I'm sleeping. I think its a damn bird had built a nest in my neighbors tree and I continue to sleep. Ugh! Perhaps I would not be typing this comment right now. I be dead doing the sleep of sleeps. REDESIGN THE DARN THING! But, the real question is "How many people actually read the instruction about what the various chirps meant? I think it should be a non-stop blaring alarm like the old simple smoke detectors! What good is a CO detector if you don't know it's detected CO! I'm pretty sure most people would not know what the "CO detected" alarm sounds like on their detector!
@jamiewagner4 жыл бұрын
Wow!! That’s a crazy story! Your right! Had it been CO and you thought a bird and you close the windows! Omg 😳 your so right! I know what your saying this is a great story actually and the company should read it because it’s a scenario that could happen, because first off your so dam tired and not fully awake you could have thought it was a bird and closed windows when you supposed to open them or get out and get fresh air if it’s CO! It caused you to do the opposite, I think your 100% correct! They should redesign it, I never thought of it like that. It could have been very bad. And if it was no one would ever understand what you did or were thinking anyway I mean they found you because of CO poisoning and you died or something they would never know this story.

My !st alert smoke/CO detector was chirping when I got home from work. I called the 1-800 number. The 1st alert lady listened to the chirping sound over the phone -3 chips- and she determined it was a device malfunction. She said she needed all the information at the back of the device the side that is facing the ceiling so they can send replacement. I told her we don't have a ladder that would allow us to reach the ceiling- she said I could call the fire department and maybe they can help me with that. I did not know that fire department people are very helpful that way. So I will try calling them tomorrow. Meanwhile, we have to deal with this crazy sound all night.

Jamie Wagner yes I know, but 3 chirps "malfunction" means to throw it away and buy a new one, which sounds a lot like end of life

One of ours did this last night! It was so weird, because these are less than a year old! We checked around the house - no smoke - not even the smell of smoke. Oddly enough, it hasn't chirped since.
@jamiewagner7 жыл бұрын
+Benjamin Esposti that's funny because before mine finally started chirping for good I noticed them chirping every now and then they actually did it in the past so ventrally yours might start chirping and not stop

I called First alert and they replaced my unit under the warranty. They said replacing the unit was the only solution for my model of alarm.

cool at least they replaced under warranty that's good. It's the best thing to do is just replace it.

You can buy them anywhere really, best thing you can do is check with your local fire department and see if they issue free ones sometimes they do all you gotta do is call and ask

Hmm... how many times do you have to replace the alarm? The last time I replaced the batteries was 9 months ago, and the smoke alarm was was just doing fine, nothing wrong with it. After 9 months, it made that same exact chirping noise every 45 sec after replacing the battery again..

!! Damn this thing. it terrorized my family last year. Had fans on it, slept in freezing temperatures with windows open, moved everyone to the living room several times. even called first alert and they said to have home inspected for deadly monoxide. thank god for your vid. becasuse I have several units chained together, they all ring 3 chirps. I brought the bad unit downstairs, and they all stopped. The bad unit chirped downstairs 3 times just like in your vid. THANK YOU for posting this. would have nice to find this on first alerts FAQ SECTION.

Just experienced a weird occurs me with mine. Same exact model. But it doesn’t chirp. It randomly goes off for minutes and won’t stop. I removed them from the ceiling and took out their batteries. Replaced them but this time one of them started chirping very rapidly for minutes. I had to take out the battery completely. Any help?

So the only fix to this is replacing? how terrible devices these are. I have mine a bit more than a year and now it is broken forever because of this? I'm furious thought it'd last more longer

-I recently had a problem with an AC--powered ("hard-wired") First Alert SC9120B combo smoke and carbon monoxide alarm emitting a triple-chirp about once a minute. The unit, similar to the one in this video except for the carbon monoxide function, was manufactured in 2012, so it is only about six years old and I would expect at least four more years of useful life. I replaced the 9-volt battery with one of the recommended types, a Duracell MN1604, but no dice. I also tried removing the battery, unplugging the unit and pressing the test button for 30 seconds to reset it, put the battery back in, reconnected the AC power, and it kept on emitting the triple chirps. Moreover, the alarm wouldn't sound when the test button was pressed for several seconds. By all appearances,it was defective. Eventually, I unplugged it, removed the (fresh) battery and just let it sit for about 20 minutes, then put the battery back in and reconnected the AC. It appears to be working normally again now, as the green LED is on steady and it hasn't chirped in more than an hour. I suspect that the recommended "trick" of pressing the test button to reset the alarm from a low-battery event doesn't really work and the only thing that works reliably is just let it sit completely unpowered for a certain amount of time.- EDIT: About two hours later it started triple-chirping again.
@jamiewagner6 жыл бұрын
Yes that might be correct but I just went ahead and replaced mine. It sounds like yours had some issues and the normal resets should have done the trick. With yours already at 6 years, I would probably replace it anyway just to be safe. You could even call first alert and ask them and they would tell you if it has reached it's end of life.
@Milosz_Ostrow6 жыл бұрын
+Jamie Wagner- As I just noted in my edit above, the unit again started emitting triple-chirps about two hours later, so I went online and found the official First Alert user manual in PDF format. It says that three chirps with the LED blinking in unison indicates a "malfunction". In other words, it's broken and needs to be replaced. For now, all I could do was disconnect the AC power and remove the battery, until I can get a replacement. (sigh) Curious, I popped the cover off the unit and found it to have a non-serviceable Ni-Cd or Ni-MH battery soldered onto the circuit board, about the size of a AA cell. That may have put there to power the sounder at its high decibel level, even during a power failure, as I don't think an alkaline 9V battery is powerful enough. I have a suspicion that deterioration of that rechargeable cell may be the cause of the failure.

@@Milosz_Ostrow if you look on the side of that "battery" and search online for the model you'll see it's actually not a battery but a carbon monoxide detector

Had the same smoke detector. Damn thing started with 3 chirps every minute at 3am yesterday. I had to take out the battery and switch off the ceiling AC power to completely shut this thing down. PS: my dog was sleeping next to me on the bed, and 3 chirps scared him so he jumped up and landed his 106lb body weight on me, I thought I was in Valhalla for a moment.

Dude, thank you so much. My detector started going off like this and I changed the battery. Kept going. I rent an apartment and they don't want tenants doing anything like touching the detector. I said fuck it and removed it from the ceiling. I opened it and everything after the 1 beep 2 beep instructions is scraped off. So I couldn't tell what any of the beeps were. Now that I know I took the battery out. It's evening now so I know the maintenance guy isn't coming. I'll wait til the morning and call management office thats outside of the city, so they can in turn call the maintenance guy who lives in my building to come here because that's how they do things. Smh. My door was jacked up last week. Couldn't lock my apartment door to leave for 4 days before he finally showed up. F this. Lol. Again, thanks man. Hope there's no fire in here til I get him up here. Peace.

+madwithhats wow dude your welcome yea hopefully they get it fixed for you. I had other working detectors in the house but I had to unhook it. It was driving me crazy! No way could I have slept with it doing that. I mean after all that’s it’s job to wake us up if there is a fire! I ended up replacing both of them because they had reached end of life and that’s why they were chirping.

How to remove it from the ceiling? Esp the wirng? I took out the battery and it still chirps cuz its still connected to the ceiling wires... The wires/plug on First Alert are harder to remove than older alarms and this noisy shit is driving me insane! How.to.safely unplug it? Please do a video

Ours can just be pulled away from the wall wires. Hold the wires in one hand and the device in the other. Pull them apart. There is still a 9v backup.

Yep, I had a hard time get the wire pulled out from the detector. It’s like a really good connection.
