I actually had a customer who did that once. I installed the smoke detectors and a year later I got a call from her. She said one was chirping. I showed up later that day and she had taken a hammer to the one chirping. I replaced the one she had smashed and replaced the the batteries to the other 3. That was that. Easiest $100.00 I ever made. I’m an electrician by the way.

This video is so worth the watch. 12am I was woken up to a horrible beeping. I changed the battery and it didn’t work. I listened to this for three days and did not sleep at all. I finally KZbind it and found this video. I cannot describe the relief I had when it finally stopped beeping. I will hear that stupid beeping in my nightmares for at least a week.

@bcshort1209
@bcshort1209 8 ай бұрын
I'm assuming that you are talking about identifying the correct circuit breaker because it's not marked with "smoke detectors" on it. The only thing to do is to get an assistant to watch the green light on the detector and then turn off each breaker one at a time. Have the assistant tell you when the green light goes off. Be sure and mark the label area in your panel box before you put your tools away. You might need it again someday.

Your video was very helpful. Straight to the point. I hate most DIY videos because they talk too much. I'm a 63 year old female. Your video helped because my smoke detector didn't stop with just the pressing of the button. Other video said press for 10 secs. yours said 30. Inside was dusty too. I sprayed the dust out and held button longer. No more beeping. So thank you.

Thank you for posting this very helpful video! You clearly and concisely give us the steps to correct my wired alarm chirping issue. I feel confident that I will be able to address this issue without having to go through the frustration of finding an electrician that I could actually book within a month's time! One very minor suggestion: when you show the back of the device for the expire date - perhaps freeze the image or hold the camera steady and use a pen/pencil to point at the expire date. This would be helpful as some of us aren't too eagle-eyed to catch it in the video! Thanks again!

I had one of these hard wired models that I could not kill. I took it down and removed the batteries. The thing would not stop chirping. I took a hammer to it and threw it in the trash. Still chirping. I pulled the trash can to the curb; still chirping. As far as I know, it may still be chirping in the landfill. I replaced it with battery operated units. So far, so good. So frustrating.

I can regularly hear a smoke alarm chirping when I go to the landfill. Many people seem to find the hammer option to be the best solution! They have models with a built in 10 year battery. the battery lasts as long as the detectors lifespan and then you chuck it out and get a new one. no chirping for 10 years!

Woke me up at 3:30 AM. I searched for the source of the chirp around the house but didn't realize the beep was coming from inside my room. I tried to ignore it for a half hour but then I grabbed my phone and did a search. This video came up and thank God! Being 4 AM, I could not go to the store to buy a 9 Volt so I decided I'd wait until morning and go buy a battery then. But the chirp was so loud and it wouldn't let me sleep if I waited until morning. Then I remembered that I had a 9 Volt in my car from when I was going to play guitar at my church! My guitar uses a 9 Volt battery and I had bought one about six months ago and it was just riding around with me in the car all this time! So then I had to decide if I was going to go outside to my car at 4 in the morning or wait until the sun came up. But I figured since God had already gave me the battery, and the noise wasn't going to let me sleep, that I should probably swap it out right away. And thank God now the loud chirp is gone. Thanks to God for giving me the battery and thank God for this video!

When my mom was still living I would stop by regularly to see if everything was OK. On one particular visit I heard the smoke alarm make a chirp. She immediately said that the noise had been driving her crazy and had even sprayed it with Raid to kill the bug that had gotten inside. I told her the chirping was not a bug but a bad battery. To be fair it does sound like a cricket. My wife and I still chuckle about the bug in the smoke alarm to this day.

I had the added fun of single-sided deafness, which, for those who haven't had the pleasure, removes your ability to determine what direction a sound is coming from-it seems to come from everywhere! But I narrowed it down to two units, one inside the bedroom door, the other in the hall just outside the door, got batteries ready for both, then googled this fantastic video on how to get to it. The side-slot battery compartment on my units were so well concealed as to be invisible! At least at 4am it seemed that way :-|. So thanks, for a much-needed assist in the wee hours :).

Can you help please? I don't know if I need to switch off a switch on the fusebox. I don't have a switch labelled smoke detector on there. I have ones labelled: lighting, lighting, sockets, sockets, shower, cooker. On the left of those is 2joined together red switches/switch saying main switch. It's a very cheap, 15 year old, basic smoke alarm. How do you know if you have to flick a switch on the fusebox, please!? I have pressed the hush button for 20 seconds but it's not resolved the chirping. Would I electrocute myself by not pressing a switch on fusebox off, then twisting plastic cover off to see which battery I need to order, please!? Is it likely to be a 9volt? To stop it chirping temporarily, can I turn the plastic cover anticlockwise, safely without flicking a switch off on the fusebox!? (I think circuitboard is same as fusebox, isn't it)!?

Thanks so much for covering this thoroughly; a little different angle is dealing with a chirping smoke alarm in larger premises with more than 10 alarms, that are hard wired and integrated with fire alarm monitoring and connected to the fire department. Ours have a 3 volt 123 lithium battery nested inside the sensor, which can be changed out by turning the sensor counter-clockwise to remove from baseplate. Just a word of caution that with our integrated system, a removal of the unit from its base does trigger an inhouse alarm mode at the control panel that will not go into full alarm mode and can be cancelled at the control panel.

Thank you for your help! The battery was low/dead, but the unit itself was too old, too. So, after I turned off the breaker, I replaced the old unit and I used a new lithium 10-year 9v battery. The one tricky part was disconnecting the wiring piece. I don't have a lot of strength in my hands, so I used a pliers to pull it out. Also, when I reconnected the wiring piece, I listened for the clicking sound (that it was properly connected). At any rate, the new unit is working great. Thanks so much for your help!

Thanks for your very helpful video. We have a 1st alert photo electric detector. It's less than a year old and started chirping intermittently. it would only chirp for an hour or so and then stop for a few days. AT 4 this morning it started again. I replaced the battery but it continued to chirp every minute. I did clear the charge, per your instructions, and it stopped. Just to be safe, I'm replacing the unit. I like that I can just unplug it from the system. The new one will just plug in. Next time I will just unplug it even if it is the middle of the night. These problems have gone on for years and you would think the manufacturers would have got these issues resolved by now. I know some people who just yanked them down from the ceiling and threw the units as far as they could. Do you think uninstalled alarms could repel skunks?

fun fact: batteries produce electricity with a chemical reaction that slows down as the battery gets colder. so in a house with a setback thermostat that allows the house to cool off at night, the voltage output of the battery will be at its lowest at about 2:00 in the morning. then when the thermostat warms the house up in the morning, the voltage will increase, and the chirp will stop - until the next night. TL/DR: it's not your imagination.

Thanks for taking the time to make this very useful video. I thought my smoke detector was consuming AAA batteries quickly. Turns out, the battery connectors needed adjusting, and I was then able to reset it. Sheesh. Thanks so much.

Thanks a lot 🙏 it’s literally The worst time possible when mine decides it’s old, new batteries aren’t doing the trick, I have an elderly bedridden mother who I can’t just leave in the middle of the night and animals who are freaking out, and I never knew there was a breaker devoted to the alarms. I’m so grateful to know that, I got it turned off and now I have a minute to get them replaced. Really I can’t thank you enough because I had no idea and I was totally panicked about how we were going to get through the rest of the night 💙🌌

It's inevitable! 2 am - one unit starts and the others start! I first took out the batteries, didn't help. Didn't know how to remove the unit until I watched the video. I unplugged and pressed the button for a few seconds. The other new thing I learned was the expiration date - didn't know they did. All of them are years past their expiration date! THANK YOU for making this so easy!

@@EverydayHomeRepairs You might not believe this but it's true. I had an alarm that went off every night this Spring. If I held down the tester button and let it beep several times it would stop for a few hours. I was being woken at night by the very same chirp as the smoke detector but it was ALSO coming from trees around my house when I went outside to listen! I did a lot of research and found out there is a small owl that makes the exact same chirp and the owls were migrating on the East Coast, and every dusk through dawn for two weeks they chirped outside trying to talk to my smoke detector when it chirped. Thank you so much! After several hair-pulling broken nights of flippin' blippin', after just 57 seconds into your video, and a rush to get the stepladder, there we found the offending 9-volt battery! We actually had 3 new ones on the table right underneath it, ready to renew the batteries in all our battery-driven smoke detectors! So now we shall sleep like babies! It could have cost us a very expensive call-out to a sparky, so I am deeply grateful to you for such an easy-peasy solution!

I used your video to help on a job. Tried everything you showed but still heard the chirp. After removing the new detector and removing it from the room still heard a chirp. I was almost convinced there was a detector in the attic. Asked the customer if there was a detectors in the dresser. Wouldn’t you know she had just bought a new CO detector and put the old detector in the dresser. Found the chirp. Anyway you might make a follow up video on how to find a chirping detector even one that may be hiding in a dresser. Great channel.

Thank you so much for this video!!! That darn beeping had my whole house going nuts lol. The fix for us was taking the detector down, changing the battery, and then pressing the reset for 30 seconds. Our combo detectors mfg date was 2020 so we should be set to use these for the next 5 to 7 years. Thank you for that tip too about the mfg date. Never would have thought to look at that otherwise. My issue has always been the battery dying, especially on the ones that are powered through the electrical system. I have never had the issue with needing to pull it apart and blow it out, but I've also never had to deal with multiple rental priorities. This was a great video, hopefully it gets people checking their smoke detectors. I've found that people tend to forget about them until they are in a state that need to be fixed.

Well, I had to buy a new unit, but SO happy they still carry same model. Though I almost bought 3 other's that were wrong model as the "helper" at the hardware store did not notice either. But, wow, I'm so much smarter now thanks to THIS video!!! I couldn't get the wired connection unplugged, so I thought maybe it wasn't supposed to be! SO glad to see how he did everything. Gave me confidence. And now no more sleepless nights!!!! I didn't even notice a model # on the back. I'll try to go clean the others now that I have some spray. Mine were same year as his and I've had them 7+ years.
