Really? I'm in the UK and we call the one at 16 an ROA (Record of Achievement) then the one at 18 is the May Ball :) Some schools around here call it a Prom but they're teased for it cause it's American.

I remember my high school grade 11/12 winter prom, which was in February of 2009, during my "grade 13" year. I wore a (kind of) spaghetti-strap A-line floor-length silver dress with thick silver dress sandals.The prom was for grade 11 and 12 (and post-grad) students, but grade 9 and 10 students could go if accompanied by a student in those grades. My brother was in grade 10 at the same school (the winter prom was the day after his 16th birthday) and I wanted to take him (not as a date, obviously), but our mom said "Siblings don't go to prom together." It was at one of the banquet halls in the city, and we were served a buffet dinner at 7:00 before the dance, and the whole thing was over at midnight.

So by reading the comments, some call it a formal, some a prom, some a ball, and now I'm just like oh, cause we call it a grad (short for graduation party) in Canada. The rest of the dances we have before graduating are just called some type of dance, usually themed, so it depends what the school is calling it for that term.
