A tip about unplugged weddings: Don't call them unplugged weddings! I found out really quickly in my wedding planning process that NO ONE knew what that phrase meant. Maybe it's just part of where I'm from, but no one knew what it meant. I'm getting married on May 18, 2019 and I've printed wedding programs that say, "We kindly ask that no cell phones or cameras be out during the ceremony. Our hired videographers and photographers are here to capture this occasion. Please join us afterward for our reception where cell phones and cameras are welcome." And then I'm also going to have my officiant mention the no cell phone thing before the ceremony begins. Fingers crossed that this all works!

Melissa Deitrick yes it did! And I’m sooo glad that I was explicit because the photographer captured some AMAZING photos that otherwise would have been ruined from people sticking their arms out in the aisle.
@nyssac29145 жыл бұрын
And “unplugged” can mean different things - if I just saw unplugged I wouldn’t be sure if it meant no phones/cameras, or no posting on socials as well. (I wouldn’t post until I knew it was ok but others may not think the same as me). I’m just going to have the officiant announce it, as I am thinking of having a friend doing some sort of livestream for relatives that can’t make it. So officiant can say “no phones or photos except for xxx who is filming for grandpa”

But surely money is the biggest factor here right? "I had my aunt do the engagement photos" screams to me "I don't have the money to hire a photographer twice" I don't have the money to "build a relationship" with the photographer or the wedding planner. I don't mean to throw shade but I'm sick of wedding advice which essentially boils down to: spend more money

TheEmmaHouli I totally agree with this but a lot photographers will have engagement session as part of the package so maybe research and find a photographer that includes engagement session in their package!
@cavinelizabeth5 жыл бұрын
This doesn't at all have to be the case. In a lot of the scenarios where I see this, someone's family member or friend was pushy and really wanted to take the photos for them and they agreed. It's almost never a money case. That wouldn't make much sense because they're hiring someone for the wedding day and often it can include engagement photos. Also, you could easily just go to coffee with the photographer and spend only $4 if the engagement was really too much. :)
@EliseHanson2165 жыл бұрын
@@cavinelizabeth I searched through over 30 photographers and they all costed about $800 to $1000 more for the engagement photos to be "included" in the package. At the cheapest it was about $200-$300 extra. The only thing I could afford was a bridal session and wedding day package at about $1900. With the engagements it would have been $2200, so I had an uncle take them. What can ya do.
@gulberne5 жыл бұрын
What was the different between the uncle's work and the wedding photographer's work? Some photographer will understand your situation and work with you, but you have to be open and honest. I used the engagement as a practice shoot. It is a moment to know the client because not everyone is camera-friendly. The engagement shoot help me to adjust and get myself ready for the wedding day. I completely agree with Miss Elizabeth . Do the engagements shoot with the same photographer because it will help the photographer on your wedding day.

I’m SUPER passionate about unplugged ceremonies. At my mother’s wedding last year, my uncle was literally in the aisle snapping photos and taking video and he wasn’t the videographer.... it was so brutal. And then during the formal photo session after the ceremony, my photographer (I’m using the same photographer as my mother because I’ve known her for years) was trying to take photos and my family members were literally like “hey can you get out of the shot we’re trying to take a photo on my phone...” and I was like “OH HECK NO”! My family was definitely the main offenders. So I sent them all a message the other day saying “hey! For the ceremony, just so you know, it’s unplugged so no phones and cameras. Also, during formal portrait time, no photos on personal cameras and phones because I’m on a time schedule for the reception and I’m going to be ready to party so I want to get these photos done as quickly as possible so we can get to partying”. Sometimes, you have to be direct. Especially if you know your family. My photographer really really appreciated it.

My daughter and her fiancée got engaged in Edinburgh Scotland. He had arranged for a photographer to take pictures and they were amazing. We then hired our wedding photographer here in Dallas who then took new engagement photos that were amazing. She will be doing the Bridal portrait and the Wedding. All of the family pictures will be taken the day of the wedding right after the First Look is done in our church. The Bride and Groom will be the first ones to the reception site and will have a little alone time before presenting themselves to their guests and then they will get shots with friends and extended family. Cocktail hour will be short and the party can begin. It makes everyone much happier and no waiting around for the bridal party.

I understand that the photographer wants to do the engagement session, but ours lives out of state and with their popularity they did not have any openings. So, we were forced to go elsewhere. Was such a bummer because I was so looking forward to meeting them prior to the wedding. I understand the unplugged part and how important it is for the photographer. I followed that rule for my sister-in-law wedding. Took no pictures, no selfies. Until I got to see the wedding pictures and I'm nowhere in it. I do not have a single picture of me at the wedding. (And I was at the main table !...). Of COURSE I was not the main subject lol but hair, dress, boyfriend, pictures with the newly weds, I have absolutely nothing but memories, because they asked the photographer to take pics of the "real" family, and seeing as I'm not married yet to her brother, I guess I'm not real family for her since she asked to have only her brother on the pics and not me. Dancefloor, party, dinner, I have absolutely no pics and when I look back it's as if I wasnt even invited. So even if I have the memory in my mind, I honestly wish I had taken a few pics with my phone, because it makes me feel sad. Maybe the best compromise would be for some parts to be unplugged and then allow a time to take pics on the phone !
@claudiaestela31355 жыл бұрын
Estelle Dupont i like the idea of the unplugged part for the ceremony only because of the ideas of the pictures being full of people looking at their phones. My bfs sister got married last August and she sent me the package that she got of photos and tbh it looks bad that everybody is on their phone. I didn’t really take any pictures with the bride and groom except for family photos. I can’t imagine what it must feel not being involved in at least one picture or be included like family. I was in the family picture and that’s the only picture I have with them so I’m glad for that. I believe that the completely unplugged wedding is a bit rude, at least just the ceremony but even when the photographer isn’t taking pictures you should’ve had the opportunity to have at least one
@cavinelizabeth5 жыл бұрын
oh no that's awful! Unplugged weddings usually only refer to the ceremony, at least in my recommendation. It's the time when guest phones have the most impact and not in a good way. Thankfully guest phones are never really an issue outside of that time!

I watched this a few days and I can’t stop thinking about it. I completely love your videos, Jamie, but I think some of the advice about following your photographer’s bidding is a little off. (I am also a wedding vendor.) I find that sometimes couples can be really uncomfortable with following these instructions. It’s not just about getting your attire a bit dirty, I’ve seen photographers ask their clients to walk through snake ridden tall grass. Or climb gates and fences or boulders, as you suggest. It sometimes ends badly and people get hurt! Especially if people are clumsy or accident prone! Now partly this is a case of picking your vendors carefully. But many times couples don’t feel like they can say no to instructions from the photographer, who often has an almost revered position on the day, whatever they say goes.

This is so good! At my brother's wedding, we didn't have a planner or coordinator, and the photographer was an amateur so the family photos did not turn out very great because the photographer totally had to put on so many hats in order to get all of the family members organized and be where they need to be for photos. (sorry for the run on sentence!) Great advice, I will definitely keep these tips in mind for the future.

I want to say thank you to the photographer here for mentioning that some weddings are Groom and Groom or Bride and Bride. Two things to add to a terrific video: the unplugged ceremony announcement goes on the e-mail too, and getting names and faces to your photographer helps so we can address more people by name. But now I’m worried the photographer doesn’t feel close to us or know us well enough and I’m starting to regret not doing one even though I know our budget wouldn’t allow it.

It'll be ok without doing one, but I would try to see if you could make it work or at least have a lunch or coffee date with them. That's always a great alternative if you can't budget for more photos :)

What's your advice for brides like myself with LOATHE having their pictures taken. I hate being in photos and then I act awkward. I did do facetime with my photographer prior to hiring him so I do feel comfortable. But if there was no photos of me I am not sure if I'd mind. But the fiance is wanting wedding photos.

Hi Jamie, is it weird to ask the photographer to change how they edit their photos? I noticed that a lot of photographers nowadays tend to have a very "warm", "yellow-ish" editing style (sorry I have no idea what it's called) and I'm not super into it. Their porfolios are on point beautiful but that's the only issue I have. I like the more colorful styles but the photographers I found who edits their pic the style I like don't have very good skill (or at least it's not how I like my pictures to be captured). So I'm just wondering if it's rude to ask photographers to change how they edit their photos

I have a lot of photographer friends and their editing style is their signature. Asking a photographer to change their editing is not respectful, you’ll need to search extra hard for a photographer that edits photos the way you like them.

@@vivianen5360 thank you for your reply! That's what I was thinking as well and I don't mean to be disrespectful to the photographers. Good to know so I won't do that haha

Hi! I've been tuning into a lot of your videos and have picked up so much useful information, Thank for you that! As far as photographers go, I am having a destination wedding. What would you recommend for photos in that sense? I have my wedding planner on site in Hawaii but I don't live there myself. My finace's family does which is why we're getting married there but because of that we're considering not doing engagement photos at all.

What do you think about "family" reception table photos? Instead of after ceremony family photos?

Do you prefer taking more photos pre-ceremony or post-ceremony?

Sarah Unan I prefer them before and my brides do too. They say it’s more relaxing knowing everything is done and they can just go enjoy cocktail hour.

I'm Indian and I feel like we have many ceremonies and many relatives love to see their pictures and share it with other families that may live in other areas (india/london/ toronto etc) so for them, it's really important. I also think that having a compromise is really important, because yes I really want to have amazing pictures ... but I also know I would get in trouble with my family if they didn't get any pictures. I'm a single pringle atm but my idea is to announce no phones during actual ceremonies but to have simple photobooths set up where families can get pictures. Just to paint a picture we have a ceremony where relatives sing songs and gather around you while they take turns applying this turmeric paste onto your skin to make it clear for the day of the wedding. I would leave it up to the professionals to capture this moment, but have a dedicated spot for cousins and relatives to take pictures with each other, and me after the ceremony. I totally understand Jamie's and the photographer's perspective though because at most American style weddings you only have that one ceremony and reception to truly capture beautiful pictures.

Great point!👌 If you live in the States, it might be effective to hire a photographer that specializes in Indian weddings. Or, if you live in India, I suppose that would be ALL photographers 😉 Someone that has worked non-W.A.S.P. weddings might be a good choice.

My photographer who did our engagement shoot wont be able to come to our wedding because she's due a couple of weeks before hand. We've hired a new one, met with her, like her, but we have don't really know if we should do a second engagement shoot with the new girl. It seems excessive to have that many photos, but I also want to get to know her better. Thoughts?

Ladies I need HELP, I hired a wedding coordinator and designer. She made our wedding invitations, not of us noticed it until I've sent most of them out but instead of Jason (he's the groom) it says Jacob. I basically texted the wedding planner saying hey I'm getting new invitations I changed the RSVP date to make the time, this is why. She then argued with me about how it's my fault I didn't catch it. I agree, I should have. But, I really don't think it should have been an argument. Only after did she apologize when I had to design new invitations, get them reprinted, pay to get them reprinted, remail them, and do damage control for all the pissed of family members. Keep the current wedding coordinator or find a new one? My main gripe is how she handled this conversation, I don't feel it was professional or understanding

Have them fly out if feasible. If they're not too far, they might even be able to fly in and out same day to avoid hotel costs. Or do an engagement again with them a few days before the wedding when you're in the same state. I've done that before and it's so helpful. There are always ways to make it work and I fully suggest doing so :)

There's an irony in doing a whole wedding video about photography and good quality work when so much of the video itself has the camera focussing on the background and not the people talking...
