I definitely agree that nails speak a TON about a person without them even speaking. I personally wear my natural nails very short and well manicured. I only wear red, nude/white, and pinks on my nails and the nail system I use is called Dazzle Dry 🙌🏽. I used to wear other colors but as my style has evolved, I have become more traditional. And I CANNOT wear long nails. In my opinion shorter nails look and work best for my lifestyle! #Teamshortandsweet

As a Nail Artist myself I have another hack for you, specially if you are a smoker and you usually paint your nails in white or pastel colors, cigarette can stain your nail polish and it doesn't look good anymore. So after you get your nails done at the salon (semipermanent nailpolish) you can put regular top coat on top of your semipermanent top coat. So if for any reason your fingers get stained (cigarettes, etc) you can just wipe of the regular top coat with drugstore nail polish remover (not the one for semipermanent) and the stain will be off. Then you can put regular top coat on top again.

I remember when I was having my manicure for my wedding day (almost 15 years ago) and really wide bright white French manicures with a very blunt long square shape was “on trend”. But I remembered that one of the photograph poses I wanted to do was mine and my husband’s hands with our wedding bands on, held over my flower bouquet. My mother and father had a photograph like that on their wedding day and I just love it. I remembered that my mother had soft oval nails with a very light pink, almost clear polish. A very traditional look. So that is the shape and color I chose. Every time I see our photo (which I have framed hanging in our living room), I am so glad I decided to go more traditional with my shape and color. I know it seems like such a small detail but it made all the difference for me. I’m not saying that it’s for everyone but it was definitely a good choice for me. I love all of your nail suggestions and although because of my work and my hobbies it’s hard for me to keep even a 1/4” over my fingertips, I keep my nails nice and neat and my hands well moisturized because all of the women in my family, although extremely hard workers and cooks, have gorgeous hands and nails. And I’ve always admired them. When I think of my Nonna, I always remember her weekly manicure with a very light rose polish and smooth delicate hands. Her “secret” was olive oil on her cuticles and hands before bedtime with white cotton gloves. I do that in the winter or when my hands get dry. Bonus tip: olive oil is wonderful for your elbows as well. ❤️

A few tips i realized for myself based on personal experience: *_1. Find a few go-to colour for everyday wear and stick to them_* (this will help when you can’t make decision for what colour to wear to an important event - go with the one you love the most or most confident in. Also, if you wear one particular colour often enough, people would notice and give compliments - which also helps with decision making) *_2. Have at least one go-to nail polish colour that matches your go-to lipstick_* (that is, you do wear lipstick and nail polishes at the same time. Obviously its completely fine if they do not match - one of my fav nail polish is a deep blue and I’ll never wear blue lips, but if I’m going to an important event and would like to look a bit more put together or sophisticated, my trick is to match my nails and lips, go easy on everything else. That combo is my confidence booster and have been working for me for years now.) *_3. Similar to one of Jamila’s recommendations, take care of your hands by exfoliating on regular basis and moisturizing on the go - find a hand cream that you love and are willing to use_* (trust me I’ve had my fair share of money spent on “trendy” or popular hand creams and currently using 1 particularly brand in 1 particular scent that I love)

I'm not in school, but used to work out during my work lunchbreak. Definitely not enough time to shower, so I brought a small hand towel, and a ziplock bag with a flannel and soap, and a change of undies and socks. Quick wash with the flannel and soap, reapply deodorant, fire in a bit of dry shampoo and restyle the hair, and you'll be good to go! It's faster than a shower but leaves you cleaner and much more comfortable than using wipes. And the ziplock takes up no space at all in your gym bag.

I heard that many deodorants have aluminum in them and that can actually be an issue. (I believe bad smell is the issue). So maybe try to find a deodorant without aluminum. Loved listening to your nail method, thank you. I am a big fan of carefully maintained hands and nails. FYI: Nails grow laterally (across) which is why they break easily when filed round or oval (there is less nail at he tip). You will notice that nails usually break or crack straight across. Filing them more square or squoval keeps more of the nail on the sides as they grow. This will make nails less likely to break.

My job is very rough on my hands, and keeping nail polish without chipping is very difficult. I now use ONE coat of an Essie pink that is close to my skin tone. Using one coat makes it less likely to chip, and using a skin tone makes any wear much less visible. I remove and re-do once a week. I make sure to moisturize my cuticles and hands throughout the week. I've been doing this for a while, and I am so happy to see my nails looking pretty good! It adds confidence, knowing that my nails still look classy after a day at work.

I recently let them grow out and I was happily surprised at how feminine they made my hands look! I wear them fairly short and rounded now. I tried longer but the nail on my index finger digs uncomfortably into my thumb when I'm drawing or painting.

Thank you for your video. I became excited when I saw the title of your video because I always admire your beautiful nails and wonder how you take care of them. I do my own nails, and not only do my nails look pretty, to me, it is a relaxing activity in the evening after a long day. Since I started playing the piano again, I have to keep my nails short, but I don’t mind because I tend to pick under my nails when they are too long. I almost always have my fingernails painted a light pink or neutral color because they look ladylike. (I may go for red for special occasions. I used to occasionally wear dark colors, especially for fun occasions, but now they don’t fit my personality anymore.) I recommend Londontown, thanks to the Daily Connoisseur, because the polishes dry fairly quickly, last at least a good week on my nails (I love the gel top coat), and most other polishes make my nails peel but not Londontown. I used Londontown polish for a month-long Cruise, and my nails looked gorgeous during the whole cruise (I occasionally did touch-ups though). 💕💅

Be sure to protect your very beautiful skin from the sun, Jamila. I started early for an American of those times, in my early 20s, but I already had significant damage. This convinced me to wear daily sunscreen and stop sunbathing when all my friends were broiling in the sun as much as possible. Their skin looks like wrinkled, old, spotty leather now. Also, just one sunburn increases the lifetime risk of skin cancer many times over.

I always aim for the square oval shape nails because I have long fingers. I just researched that nail shape and it means someone who is ladylike, assertive, and ambitious. These do so well align with me. The square shape like yours is the Vogue choice. Your nails are beautiful. Frankly, I had never thought about the nails shape meanings. Thank you. ❤️

Hi Jamila, please consider doing an etiquette about wearing jewelries. Like which arm to wear watch? Etc.

People don't wear watch on their arms, wear it on wrists. That's why it is called "wrist watch".

How to carry yourself when angry/injured/frightened without compromising your dignity and grace. That's what I tend to have trouble with, mostly because I've never had an example in my own life of how that might look. Recently, a large and terrifying rattlesnake made an appearance outside the door to my office and I was the first to discover it. I went back inside and closed the door to alert everyone and wait things out inside until a professional came to remove the snake... but I had to really focus hard to hold myself back from making a total scene when I first saw that thing on my way to my car. My initial instincts told me to jump, panic, and run back inside shouting about it to the entire office like a chicken with its head cut off. Maybe sometimes it's appropriate, or at least understandable, to lose our composure. But I'd sure prefer to be the person who is good at staying collected under pressure if I can help it.

My natural nails used to be super super brittle, thin, bendable, breakable. I started using cuticle oil regularly (anything is fine, like jojoba oil or squalane oil). If you get a dedicated cuticle oil, get one with vitamin E. I also started using Nailtiques formula 2 for soft/peeling/bitten/weak nails and it really helps with making them stronger. Now I regularly get dip powder nails or acrylic ombre nails once a month or every 6/8 weeks.

To anyone considering Shellac: if you have soft, weak, brittle or otherwise compromised nails (not including biting here because that's a separate issue as far as I know) and use acrylic, gel, etc to protect them and make them grow, please be aware that Shellac might not be ideal. Rather strong chemicals are needed in the Shellac polish itself to make it last and be this effective, as well as when you have it removed. Will the nails grow longer with Shellac? Of course. There's little outside wear eating away at the tips. Will they grow stronger? In my experience (if you use them constantly), no. My pinky nails even halved in thickness. If you want to use them as a treat for occasions or similar, that's most likely fine. But if you renew Shellac every time it begins to chip (2-3 weeks depending on lifestyle and work) then you may start damaging the integrity of your nails. As someone prone to brittle nails, I can't speak for how much or little long term use of Shellac would affect those of you with stronger nails. But please take this possibility into consideration and watch out for it if you do switch. On a finishing note, I loved using Shellac for how long it lasted and how sturdy and beautiful my nails were, but in the end I'm more concerned about their health. It may work for some of you though.

So true, same with gel, what happens is they block air to your nails which makes them brittle. While arcylic and dip are just as damaging, they do have one benefit of having a “firm” structure to their formula which does protect the nail from breakage, as well as, if you do break a nail you don’t have to trim your others but can have an artificial tip placed on until it’s the same length as the others. I am a convert to dip and love these the most because you don’t need UV lights for them to dry and it’s a relatively fast process with durability and it feels more natural on your real nails like a gel but has the strength of acrylic without the risk of age spots on your hands.

Haha I never like to grow my nails because I would always accidentally scratch and injure myself quite badly... As a hobbyist piano player and double bass player, hmmm I don't really like getting any longer nails but if I'm going to get nail polish, the nail polish always chipped =(
