Ian Paice (as in Pace) -- he's a beast of a drummer and deserves more recognition and credit. Roger Glover on bass and the late great Jon Lord on the organ. Ian Gillan replaced Rod Evans on vocals and Roger Glover replaced Nick Simper on bass. David Coverdale replaced Ian Gillan on vocals and Glenn Hughes replaced Roger Glover on bass for 3 albums and Tommy Bolin replaced Ritchie Blackmore on guitar for one of those albums. After Deep Purple, David Coverdale started Whitesnake. Ian Paice played on 3 albums and Jon Lord played on 6. Roger Glover played bass in Rainbow with Ritchie Blackmore. Ian Gillan replaced Dio in Black Sabbath on the Born Again album. Glenn Hughes sang on the Black Sabbath album Seventh Star. Deep Purple classic lineup of Ian Gillan, Ritchie Blackmore, Roger Glover, Ian Paice, Jon Lord reunited on the classic 1984 album Perfect Strangers.

Here's the thing too. They could have done without David Coverdale with MkIII and just had Glenn Hughes do the vocals. I prefer Gillan and MkII but Hughes deserves major props. He still belts it out today. Coverdale has always been wishy washy. Really bad live. Ugh... They let Glenn sing the bridge because David couldn't reach that high stuff like Gillan.

You're right, this was the golden era. You can't imagine how hard this was at the time it came out (1970). I was just a wee lad, but got the rock bug early in about '72 & started listening to DP, Zep etc., when I was in about the 3rd grade

This is, by far, my all-time favorite Deep Purple song. It's the drum riff which makes this song memorable. You ought to check out Uriah Heep's Gypsy.

Paice, Lord, Glover, Blackmore & Gillan. These guys were part of the holy trinity of metal at the beginning along with Zep and Sabbath. The 60’s and 70’s was the time not just for metal but for all genres of music. The burst of creativity during this almost 20 year period will never be duplicated. I voted for this album as best metal album of all time on another channel. Happy belated Birthday T. ✌️🔥

I recommend you check out the 1976 highly overlooked album Come Taste the Band. It's the only pre 80's Deep Purple album without Ritchie Blackmore. Tommy Bolin filled in but died soon after from a drug overdose. With David Coverdale on vocals you can hear the foundation being laid for his group Whitesnake, which he formed after they put Deep Purple on the shelf. Definitely check out Coming Home, Dealer, Love Child and You Keep On Moving.

In Rock will always be my favorite Studio Album. I bought the album on a wim. All I heard from Deep Purple was Hush and Kentucky Woman. I was 9 years old and I went home and put it on my GE Wildcat Stereo and Speed King came crashing through the speakers and I was completely blown away. You are absolutely correct. That album had sounds and proto Metal. Proto Trash. I love the ending of Flight Of The Rat when Blackmore uses the Wa Wa which I can't remember another song that Ritchie uses that effect. Living Wreck, Child In Time. The Album is the best of the Big Three. What I mean by the big three is Led Zeppelin's and Sabbath's First. Although The First Black Sabbath Album is special but it doesn't have the Energy of In Rock. In Rock just rocks and is a ass kicker.

What a song. Blackmore's guitar sound can only be described as "liquid" like. How I imagine liquid would sound. And Paice was a huge influence on me as a drummer myself, in fact I played this song beat for beat in a covers band. You MUST listen to Fireball. Fast, thrashy, and the drums....oh my god. Probably the best drum performance on any song.

100% agree with you on the lack of distinctive musicians these days as opposed to the golden days of rock. I grew up listening to all these 70's bands and they were magical times. Ian Paice is one of my favourite drummers/percussionists, he's a powerhouse. You NEED to check out the track "Fireball" if you want to hear Paice really do his thing. First heard it on its release in 1971 and it blew me away! Been a fan ever since "Pictures Of Home" is a damn good groove as well. Just subbed to the channel and looking forward to future reactions. Led zeppelin black sabbath and deep purple all had amazing drummers. These guys all had jazz influences in there drumming. So much amazing music came out of England in the late sixties.

Great deep cut. The song was actually a single and not on a studio album, but was on Mark I and II, a compilation album from the 70's, which also contained When a Blind Man Cries. Good choice, I like to see a reaction like this than the same top 5 songs from bands like most reactors do.

I was a teen back in the seventies and Deep Purple was my band. Seventeen years old in 1974, driving a Roadrunner, Deep Purple 8 track in my Craig 8 track tape deck with a girl in a tube top and Daisy Dukes. Life was good back then. And simple. ROCK ON!!!!

Hey T! I was hoping you would do some more early 70's Alice Cooper. They really do have some very good stuff. A few good suggestions that you may not have heard, Halo of Flies, Desperado, Muscle of Love, Ballad of Dwight Fry and a few you may have heard, Billion Dollar Babies, Under my Wheels & I'm Eighteen. There are plenty more, but this is a good start. They were one of the biggest bands in the world throughout the early 70's and worth a listen. Have a great weekend!

Ritchie Blackmore and John Lord always got full recognition for their skills and musicianship, while Ian Paice always suffered in anonymity. But Ian is clearly their equal is his virtuosity. In lists of top 5 or top 10 drummers, he is rarely mentioned, but he is clearly up there near the realm of Peart and Bonham. Great to listen to him play.

Check out "April" by DP ... It's a three part classic-rock-suite from 1969 and a masterpiece which sadly is only 12:10 min long ... :-( I wish that song would go on forever!!! But "In Rock" is still my fav vinyl of DP ... heard it as a kid and felt in love with it! that's like 30+ years ago ... damn, I'm getting old! ^^+gg XD

If Paice Is on fire here you should check Is drumming on Kentucky woman, Hey Cisco, all I got Is you, tarantella a dispetto, jazz Police or the ending of: Mary long, lady double dealer and Hurricane (live) other than the obvious Fireball, Burn etc. If you want a super drums solo I suggest "speed King (Paice view). Ian Paice should be as famous as Bonham (at least).

Interesting thing is about these 3 bands Black Sabbath, and led zeppelin only lasted 20 years performing and for various reasons broke up, where as deep purple are still performing after 50 years and all members are still going in their 70s bar jon lord on keyboards who sadly passed away back in 2012 from cancer.....I also don't know why Sabbath and zeppelin aren't still around today...

Deep Purple had some success as a British pop-rock band in 1968... so it was quite a gamble to fire the lead singer & bassist in 1969 after 3 records, and hire vocalist Ian Gillan ("gill an") and bassist Roger Glover and start from scratch. Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore heard the music of Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin, and he wanted to write music in that heavy rock vein... Keyboardist Jon Lord proposed a symphonic concerto album in 1969, but it didn't have the impact they wanted. Blackmore insisted that they needed to explore the heavy rock sound... and came up w/ the riff on 'Black night'... it became a huge UK single in 1970, and Deep Purple were inspired to go that route on the 'In rock' album that came out that year and made a huge impact in the UK and Europe. However, in the US, they were still expected to play their 60's songs like 'Hush' and 'Wring that neck'... It wasn't until 1972 when the album 'Machine head' and the live album 'Made in Japan' were released that US fans poured in... by 1973, Deep Purple's catalog was on the charts! Drummer Ian Paice ("pace") is considered one of the great rock drummers, and he's the only original member of Deep Purple today. He joined the band in 1968, just as they changed the name to Deep Purple... he remained good friends w/ keyboardist Jon Lord, and even played w/ him in Whitesnake, just before Deep Purple reformed in 1984. Jon Lord left Deep Purple amicably around 2002 to focus on classical music projects; he sadly passed away from cancer in 2012. Deep Purple played a concert "Celebrating Jon Lord" in his honor in 2014.

I developed a memory program for remembering the Ians' last names for you. Just think "Fishface." "Gill"an with a hard "G" and Paice rhymes with face. Paice is one of the most technical drummers of his time (and for quite a while after) and was probably only 2nd in speed behind jazz-great Buddy Rich. @@TheAdventuresofTNT You were talking about the distinctive between musicians and 70’s rock bands. I’m black male but I love rock music since i was in Middle school. I’m Cuban imagine those times been black and rock music fan in a Caribbean country? Like me were a few in the whole island. For me was a challenge between life and death, even my family hated me. So I choose to live and fight against the system. Was early 80’s and we were so young to appreciate everything 😮 in the music world so in my country the so called trinity between those bands didn’t exist, it was a real battle among those fans. Led Zeppelin’s fans were doing their party’s away from Deep Purple fans, even the towns. There were fighting each other. I started listening Deep Purple in 1979 and then year later Led Zeppelin, I didn’t hate any of them because I had friends in both side so I had time to enjoy both groups and Black Sabbath separated. Was crazy times because even the girls were polarized. Like in baseball between Yanks and Boston was like that. Seeing you listening rock music and digesting everything remember me those times when the rock music was banned. You in my face a big smile and my eyes are tearing . But like I telling you I stood up though the time, many of my generation were fading because the haters of rock music. The time passed and more than 40 years I still love rock and my sons love it too. My late son has a wider spawn of music. He likes jazz, funky, rock, pop, rap, r&b and I don’t know what else. Thank you for bring my early years in the rock music back. I love you work. Keep it up See you later Peace
