Jammu's Famous Street Food (Incl. Home-Cooked Local Dogra Cuisine!)

So many people pass through Jammu on the way to Srinagar and miss all the amazing street foods and Dogra cuisine that Jammu City offers! But not me! I ate it all, including Jammu's most famous Kalari Kulche and Kachaloo Chaat.
After a day of stuffing myself with all the best street food in Jammu, we went to my Dogra friend's house and ate like kings! His mum prepared us a full Dogra wedding spread. You'll never experience this home-cooked Dogra food anywhere but in Jammu at a wedding or a local's house.

Most Indians themselves know nothing about Jammu&Kashmir and how diverse the subcultures are. You have the Paharis, Mirpuris, Dogras, Kashmiris, and of course the subcultures within Ladakh. I used to live in Udhampur when I was a kid and left J&K in 2008. And the street food you get there is something you won't get anywhere! I remember waiting for kachalu chaat waala every day in the noon. This video brought back so many memories. Now I'm sitting in Germany and drooling over the items in this video. Welcome to Jammu Karl! So happy to see someone make a video on Jammu/ Dogra food. You were so close to my home when you were filming near the Raja's old palace! Next time you visit, you should definitely try the halwa that's sold by a vendor in Raghunath Bazaar. His halwa is pretty famous and you have to go early in the morning though because it gets sold out by 7am on a good day. It's a small stall -almost like a pani puri stall. I always try to visit it whenever I am in the city. Def give that a try next time you visit!

Hey Karl, glad you did Jammu food but you have missed the most traditional of Jammu foods reserved for special occasions. It is called Mah Ka Madra. It is black lentils cooked in traditional dogri style and served with rice and oriya. Oriya is another traditional dogri dish made of mustard and potatoes cooked with curd. That's a unique dish that you'll not get anywhere else.

Hey whats going on with Thomas cook? Heard in news that 150,000 Britishers are stranded outside UK, and govt is trying to repatriate them? Can you shed some light on it.

@@dhavalp5285 basically they had cash flow problems so they have gone into liquidation leaving 150000 British persons and 450000 Europeans stranded on holiday in foreign countries. I believe apart from the obvious sadness for all involved I believe the UK government has done a good job of getting people home through 50 charted jumbo planes I believe.

@@timothyonipad Tim I too am from UK. I dont know your circumstances but you can fly to india for about 500 return now and 30 a day including accommodation is easily doable. Any questions let me know, it really is an amazing country with the nicest people you will ever meet, not a plug but I have some india videos on my youtube account if you are interested, I am 38 and quit my job to travel alone around india for 3 months 2 years ago

Usually, people come to Jammu only to visit Vaishno Devi Temple but as Karl showed us, it is much much more than that. Great food, warm people.

Indian Hospitality is so AWESOME, and the food that they make, sadly the only Hindu restaurant here in my country is in Mexico City and most probably only for rich people. The betel nut ice cream, very popular in India and I hear the betel nut is also very popular in Thailand, more specifically amongst old ladies. Thanks for sharing this IRIE Upload Karl Ji! :)
