The Tatas were close to the British (and I don't think there was anything wrong with this given the time). His own son was knighted. He was too big to be refused entry at a third rate place like the Watson's hotel. Nationalists simply made that up and the later Tatas stuck to that story because they didn't want to be seen as pals with the British. Want proof? Read Jamsetjee Tata's own correspondences to his family where he explains the reason he founded the hotel.
