Thank you for uploading and sharing this wonderful piece by Zelenka. As you have mentioned in your concluding paragraph above, Zelenka is more than just a master of sacral music. His six trio sonatas (ZWV 181) are, in my opinion, true masterpieces. So are some of his sinfonia concertante such as the 'Hipochondrie (ZWV 187).
@Xanaseb7 жыл бұрын
My pleasure! Have you listened to his Capriccios (ZWV 182-185 & ZWV 190) too? They aren't exactly to the same high level of quality (with thinner texture, and are often quite repetitive (due to them having many 'dance' movements)) - but they have some gems hidden within them, and astonishing corni da caccia / horn work. I recommend the recording done by the Bach Sinfonia, because other recordings tend to be too slow, or with old-style-interpretations. If only he had written more instrumental music!
@nostalgie66207 жыл бұрын
I haven't but I shall. Thank you for your recommendations. Once, many many years ago the very Claudio Scimone, told me in person that baroque music interpretations of the 20th century were far too slow than originally played/ performed. Indeed, he should have written more instrumental music. In my opinion, he is ahead of his time. The abruptness in his work remind me of CPE Bach and his Sturm und Drang Hamburg Symphonies. Many thanks, again.

***** Despite Zelenka's (possibly poor) relationship with Hasse (ie.) succeeding in taking the position of Kapellmeister for the Royal Court over Zelenka in 1733), his music certainly transformed over the course of the 1730s to become much more operatic and adopt the 'galante', albeit in his "unusual" way ( ;) ). I read that some musicologists argue that Zelenka might have already been exhibiting the marks of this sort of music (for eg. his Missa Sancti Josephi of 1731) even before Hasse arrived in Dresden, which is quite intriguing. Nevertheless, we can *thank* Hasse for the influence he had on Zelenka's late music - as without it, we would not have had the ultimate (pardon the pun!) Zelenkan masterpieces, his final masses of the 1740s. In my opinion, they were the culmination of both his operatic/galante/Italianate attempts in the 30s and the contrapuntal experimentation of the 20s. He transcended the Late Baroque with those works.

Hana Blazikova sings like an angel...something I remember every time I stumble across her voice. Zelenka keeps doing things my ear doesn't expect. This group is perfect, but so is Collegeum 1704. Is Prague so big that it has two groups this fine??
@Xanaseb9 жыл бұрын
Indeed! The Prague Early Music scene is huge - If you haven't noticed from live videos, many Prague musicians appear in different ensembles. They help each other out, but at the same time have quite different interpretations of the music, which keeps things lively. Besides from the big 2 there's also: Musica Florea (Marek Stryncl) and Collegium Marianum (and probably more!).
@Xanaseb9 жыл бұрын
Also, do check out Ensemble Inégal's new CD: Psalmi Vespertini I (see: nibiru-publishers.com or cdmusic.cz to find it, the 'Creation of Adam' artwork is unmissable)- the first ever complete recording of Zelenka's first 1725 Psalm cycle. These psalm settings have importance to Zelenkas music like the cantatas are to JS. Bach. I received the new album recently, I can tell you it was like listening to Zelenka afresh again, just like you describe. Stunning masterpieces.
@redskindan789 жыл бұрын
Ah! Yes, I will look for Ensemble Inegal's Psalmi Vespertini. And I look at the musicians and singers in the KZbins...have noticed the same young people in different groups. I "met" Anna Fusek this summer when Collegeum 1704 posted a video of Fusek soloing on recorder with them. Then found a video of Capella Ana in which she switches from piece to piece between violin and recorder. I recognized some of the Collegeum 1704 "regulars". I am astonished, as well, that Blazikova majored in music and philosophy. She also plays harp and sings in an all-women's group (can't remember the name) that specializes in medieval and renaissance music. Fusek leads her group, plays recorder and violin, and studied acting at, I think, Julliard. Amazing.
