Angelico come era angelica la voce, adatta a ruoli amorosi elegiaci, canto facile specie sugli alti molto squillanti e ben lanciati non perdono di consistenza, sono raggi laser, cantava al tempo dei giganti, ci stava molto bene assieme a loro. Piacevole ascolto. Bravo!!!!!

Kiepura had a magnificent voice and just for the record the Great Tenor Lauri Volpi said Kiepura was the BEST Calaf the high tessitura suited his voice perfectly Richard Tauber said the same of him His voice was like a laser beam and carried like a rocket it was he who stood on top of car roofs and gave impromptu performances for people who couldn’t get a ticket No amplified assistance required and he was handsome my Father told me that unfortunately because of black and white films you couldn’t see how beautiful his eyes were My Father met him in Warsaw a couple of times when he was a boy on the second occasion Kiepura said to him Didn’t I give you an autograph yesterday My Father said yes but I love you he said what is your name Jan my Father replies so Kiepura wrote on the autograph in Polish of course From big Jan to little Jan your friend Jan Kiepura Of course my Father lost it along with everything else due to the war but his memory of that moment was given to me as I now give it to you 😊

Subito dopo la II guerra mondiale. il1 e 2 novembre in cinema a Jesi proiettavano la Boheme con J .Kiepura e Marta Eggerth ogni anno alternando con Ollio e Stanlio e "Le due orfanelle" : si vedevano per 2 volte nello stesso pomeriggio.

Bartku, o ile mi wiadomo nigdy nie bylo tego nagrania audio w języku włoskim ani w angielskim; audio było nagrane tylko w języku niemieckim. Umieszczone przeze mnie wideo jest oryginalne ponieważ Kiepura śpiewał ta arię po włosku. 😀

This is exactly why you shouldn't use films to showcase opera singers: the second "Nessun Dorma" should be an octave lower (maybe (unlikely) Kiepura couldn't actually sing it or maybe the (non-musical) director thought it lacked punch), and "quando la luna splendera" should be "quando la luce splendera". Kiepura's not italian, so I guess he didn't know any better, but it does suggest he wasn't familiar with the part. Leaving that aside, it's OK, but nothing special. I feel a bit of a curmudgeon writing this because I'm sure I've heard him and been impressed, but not in this kind of repertoire.

JK was obviously capable of a very good "nessun dorma" (not that this one is bad) - see kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIraq3mBrpefjqM He sounds much more comfortable in German (Bjorling, to me, did his best in Swedish).

Thing to remember is, this was 1934; only 8 years after Turandot first premiered in an age before you could just Google stuff with filmmakers and a tenor who likely didn't speak Italian, so a mistake in the translation is pretty understandable. As for why the second nessun dorma isn't at the right pitch, could just be an artistic decision on the part of the director as Kiepura clearly knew the correct tune, or it might be because of a lackluster recording setup that didn't sound good with lower notes, hence a decision to raise the pitch

Kiepura was able to sing Vincero in high B, instead of top C. His voice was naturally suited to sing top notes with ease. However, it looks as though, in this case, it was done purposely because it was a movie performance, designed to impress the audience 😀. And rightly so. Not many tenors can sing top notes with such great technique, clarity, beauty and power. This is what Italians call chiaroscuro.
