Repent and trust in Jesus. We all deserve Hell for our sins, such as lying lusting coveting and more. We can't save ourselves, but Jesus can save us. He died on the cross to save us for our sins and rose from the grave defeating death and Hell. You must put your faith in him only. He is the only way to Heaven. Repent and trust in Jesus. Romans 6:23 John 3:16❤❤😊

I saw him only once in Genoa, Italy, my hometown. I didn't want to but my grandparents insisted, they were both partisans who fought Mussolini, hard people, "you have to see the Maestro. One day you will tell it to your grandchildren". They were right and I am. I miss them both like the sun.

And yet less than a hundred years ago, opera was very much a performance for the everyday public, not only the elite. My Italian parents were poor as church mice, but would go to the opera while courting. Probably not in the best opera houses and probably not the best seats, but it was far from entertainment for just the "elite". Maybe that was just the Italy of the 50's. But my father was as blue collar as you could get and he had a massive collection of Opera records. Different era, different culture, i suppose. But yes, Pavarotti and his divine voice transcends time and music.

I think he was just very artfully acting out the lyrics. Notice the lyrics are"…. but in the dawn I will win, I will win!"? I think*that's what that expression was meant to portray - the look of ultimate victory after (literal or figurative) night, or suffering, or perhaps darkness, maybe 🤔? Either way it was wonderful and I'm glad we can all appreciate it.

For those who are curious about the story behind this piece: it is an aria from the opera Turandot by Puccini. It talks about this princess named Turandot that doesn't want to marry anyone so she establishes this strange rule that every man that want to marry her has to solve 3 enigmas and if they fail one they will be executed. Many men tries and die, but one day this man comes from a city far far away and nobody knows him or his name. He solves the 3 enigmas, so the princess has to marry him but, as I said, she doesn't want to be engaged with anyone. So her future husband gives her a chance: if the princess will found out his name before the sun arise in the sky he will refuse to marry her. This is why they sing "Nessun dorma" (Nobody sleeps) because everybody has to help the princess discover this name. Then he sings "Il mio mistero è chiuso in me, il nome mio nessun saprà" (my mistery is closed in me, nobody will know my name) and then other prhases in which he asks to the moon and the stars to go away so that the morning will come, and by the end he sings "e all'alba vincerò! Vincerò! VINCERÒ!" (and in the morning I will win! I will win! I WILL WIN!) because he is sure that there is no way anybody in all the reign knows his name. This was very simplified but that's it IMPORTANT EDIT: I made a mistake, I'm sorry. By the end he sings "E all'alba vincerò! Vincerò! VINCERÒ!" because Calaf (that's the name of the man) wants to tell his name to the princess Turandot by himself while kissing her, so that she will choose to marry him because she loves him and not because she has to. I'm so sorry

He was simply superb. I'm from Modena too, and I've met him many many times around the city and in some very typical, old fashioned and some almost unknown restaurants we both used to love. When I was meeting him I used to salute him with just one word: "Maestro..." and he always smiled and saluted back, like a true lord. He was one of the kindest man I've ever knew, always had a nice word for everyone. I don't know why I'm writing this right now, after all these years... nostalgia, I guess.

To be honest he wasn't superb in this perfomance, the real opera is different, Pavarotti singing the real opera is different. Turandot never been the cup of tea of Pavarotti, he didn't have the proper voice to sing it. Franco Corelli was superb. This is a performance for a pop audience, made without proper training etc.., an exibition for those people who love Bocelli and Il Volo, I bet they're shocked by a real opera tenor like Pavarotti.

Listening to this as an Italian, I feel privileged to fully understand the power of the line "Dilegua, o notte! Tramontate stelle! All'alba vincerò!". I will try to convey it here. The verse is right at the beginning of the climax, just after the choir desperately cries that they are going to be put to death because they are unable to find out the name of the unknown young man (Calaf) that is challenging their princess Turandot. The challenge is indeed to guess his name before the dawn: if Turandot will guess correctly, he will offer his life to be put to death - if not, Turandot will become his wife. The power of the music combines with the audacity of the text: the desire of Calaf is so strong that he LITERALLY gives orders to the universe; his love is so powerful and ravening that he wants to take the celestial vault with his hands and turn it upside down. "Dilegua, o notte" = "Vanish, o night". "Dileguare": what a verb! In modern italian it is used almost always in its reflexive form ("dileguarsi", meaning usually "to run away", e.g. I ladri sono usciti dal negozio e si sono dileguati - Thieves went out of the shop and ran away). In the rare instances when it is used in its non-reflexive form ("dileguare"), it is always transitive, meaning "dissolve, dissipate, clear out" (e.g. Le sue parole hanno dileguato ogni dubbio - His words dissolved any doubt). In my opinion, the fact that here the verb is used as non-reflexive but intransitive verb, makes it to my contemporary Italian's ears so INCREDIBLY elegant, so noble, so urgent, so authoritative, so imperious that I wish the entire world spoke Italian to feel it. "Dileguare" comes originally from Latin de-lĭquare, same root of the word "liquid", once meaning indeed "make something liquid, liquefy". "Vanish, liquefy, do what you want but go out of my sight, o night!" "Tramontate stelle!" = "Set, you stars". "Set" meaning "fade, go down below the horizon", indeed "tramonto" means sunset and the verb "tramontare" can be used for any astronomical object that disappears below the horizon (etimology: tra-montare, "go beyond the mountains" on the horizon). "All'alba vincerò" = "At dawn I will win" (alba, dawn, from Latin alba (lux), white (light) of the sky as the sun approaches the horizon). And all this elegance to rudely say, basically: "Outta my way, night; get lost, stars, I want my princess and I'm going to take her, no ifs no buts!", and to say that in that moment, looking at the immense sky above Peking, resolutely shutting up the despair of the people that is possibly going to be sentenced to death (this is no aria for snowflakes, desire is here represented in its pure "distilled" form and can hardly be correct, handle with care: desire confronts the stars and the universe and wants to tear them down, being a cosmic force it's lightyears away from moral considerations), and with that music, with that voice, and Pavarotti, in that moment, exactly as Calef, a merciless predator that wants to conquer his Turandot (the audience) and knows he will, acting and at the same time feeling it to the bone, that looks ravished and needs to take a deep breath at the end...

I majored in Italian at university and I'm not a native speaker, but the way you analyzed this one verse reminds me so much of the way we used to read Italian poetry in class. The weight of Latin that the Italian poetic language carries, the nuance of the word choice and it's roots in the etymology, the way those choices paint a detailed picture of the emotional state of the subject. Italian is not a language of passion and desire only because of the vowels and intonation, but also because of the tradition and history that stands behind every word, that transfer the emotion to the listener/reader in such a delicate, elegant way. It makes you feel any emotion on a deeper level, such itentional choice of words. It is clear from your comment you have an intense love for your language, it's beautiful to see. Greetings from Serbia!

Every time in my life i've heard this song, thought to myself that there's nothing rhat could beat this. A couple of years back, i've learned about Turandot's whole story. Nessun dorma is the main aria for the third act. When you put this heavenly intepretation into context for that opera.. it makes it even more romantic, more touching and more meaningful. Anyway, Pavarotti was a master between masters. He was gifted and choose to share with us that gift. What an inmense privilege.
