'Jaan Pehchan' (1959) was an ordinary film but with unexpected twists which include an extraordinary twist of plastic surgery unheard of in 1950. The subject resurfaced again in 'Ye Waada Raha' (1982). Incidentally, both these films starred the father and son Raj Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor respectively. Both the films didn't do well. 'Jaan Pehchan' picks up in the second half with the twists and tries to hold the interest of the viewers mainly because of the presence of the two stars Raj Kapoor and Nargis though their magic is missing. For a change, Jeevan was very endearing in a positive role. Your heart goes out to him for his noble gesture though at times one does tend to suspect his intentions and moves. Amir Banu as the step mother was as usual loud. Amar as the blind father had nothing much to do but lament and sob. Sankata Prasad (brother of Kanhaiyalal) as the doctor and Mukri as the bumpkin having a crush on Nargis, were passable. The end could have been more dramatic. But I am not revealing much about it. Khemchand Prakash could not create the magic that he created with his musical score in 'Ziddi' and 'Mahal' or even 'Rimjhim' and 'Sawan Aaya Re' which came in and around the same time. Only the duet 'Armaan bhare dil ki lagan' became popular. He died leaving the film's music incomplete which was completed by Manna Dey. A rare collaboration of the maestro with Shakeel Badayuni who then wrote mostly for Naushad and Ghulam Mohammed. 'Jaan Pehchan' was the fourth or fifth of the 16 films of Raj Kapoor and Nargis: 'Aag: (1948), 'Andaz' and 'Barsaat' (1949), 'Pyar' (1950), 'Awara' (1951), 'Ambar', 'Ashiana', 'Anhonee', 'Bewafa' (1952), 'Aah', 'Dhun' , 'Paapi' (1953), 'Shree 420' (1955), 'Chori Chori' and Jagte Raho' (1956); in the last mentioned film Nargis was seen in a refreshingly fleeting song appearance 'Jaago mohan pyaare'.
