Chwala II RP. Zawsze jedno mówili, drugie deklarowali i podpisywali, a trzecie robili. W ciągu trzech pierwszych miesięcy wojny Armia Czerwona straciła 15,5 tys. czołgów, 66,9 tys. armat i moździerzy, ok. 10 tys. samolotów!!!! Bronił nakazanego stanowiska do końca. Zostali w zagrodzie, trwając w pogotowiu”.- fragment z Newsweek "Ta relacja autorstwa niemieckich korespondentów wojennych, Kurta Froweina i Wilfreda von Ovena, oddaje dramat bitwy granicznej 1 września 1939 roku. Były to największe straty, jakie miał ponieść Wehrmacht do czasu bitwy o Stalingrad i oblężenia Leningradu dwa lata później - a przez te dwa lata Niemcy podbili prawie całą Europę". Chwała, szacunek i wieczna PAMIĘĆ na zawsze naszym Wielkim Przodkom!

Many modern Europeans fail to appreciate the significance of this battle. If Vienna had fallen, it was only a question of time before the rest of Europe would fall. The great achievements of Europe in the Arts, Music , Philosophy Mathematics and Science which is the foundation of the modern technology really take place in Europe fromthe 1700's and onwards. I was shocked that a monument of Jan Sobieski to commemorate this great moment in European history was rejected by the leftist authorities in Vienna on the 12 September 2018. This day should be commemorated by every European just as we remember the end of the second world war.

The fact remains Sobieski and allies were outnumbered almost two to one. I don't think what he achieved is a laughing matter, any victory over Islam should not be underrated. Nope. In fact the Commonwelath of Poland was famous for winning battles using very little forces. Polish armies were very small in most of wars during that period, because the Commonwealth's nobility of different nations and religions was afraid of the royal power and didn't want the king to have strong forces under his command. The first elected king Henry d'Anjou signed the Warsaw Confederation (a document which guaranteed freedom of faith to all Nobles and their lieges freedom of faith) only because the nobles said they will chop him with sabres if he doesn't do it. The third elected king, Sigismund Vasa, caused a homewar. The 'Rokosz Zebrzydowskiego' home war was largely against religious discrimination started by the king.

The Battle of Vienna was one of the most dramatic and decisive battles ever fought. It marked the turning point in the 1000 years of relentless struggle between the West and Islam. In fact, the West recovered and struck back, finally ending Ottoman domination in southeastern Europe. In other words, it was an epic battle that ended the expansion of imperialistic Islam into the heart of the Western world; never again would the armies of the sultan threaten the gates of Europe. The nightmarish scenario of Europe being divided by the Ottoman and French absolutism was avoided. Regarding the battle that shaped the modern Western world and has no parallel in history, it lasted for 12 hours and was won thanks to the determined leadership of Sobieski and his “Angels of Death” - winged hussars - the best cavalry of all time.

Don't mind some people that are simply still mad about the war and things in the past. Poles are taught history on a completely different level than Western Europeans. We live in our past with our traditions and history every day. That's why some people are still mad about many things that happened. That being said I wanted to give you something very interesting to follow :) After Sobieski mopped the floor with the Ottomans, the Persian leader wrote a letter to Sobieski, that they will take Christian baptism as a country and nation if Sobieski will go to fight the Ottomans further. Persians had a war with them as well. When Sobieski went to Vienna he only took Polish cavalry because the Lithuanian cavalry was a little bit late and they couldn't wait any longer. They instead protected the borders of the Commonwealth and later on did an intervention in Hungary because they were enslaved by the Ottomans. Sobieski took the forces from Vienna and attacked Ottomans in Hungary from another side. We were able to free Hungarians, of course with their help. What's very interesting is that Sobieski wanted to march and take Constantinople and retake it for the Christendom. If it weren't for Swedes and Russians, we would most likely make another Crusade. What happened though is war with Russia and Sweden so we weren't able to fulfill our plans. Too bad. Because our combined force of the Commonwealth cavalry had over 60 thousand people with over 20 thousand Winged Hussars, complimented with Pancerni (Heavy cavalry) and Lisowczycy (Light, mobile and fast) It could be glorious. Regards :)

Even most of Poles don't realise that this is rubbish. Sobieski had MUSLIM UNITS IN HIS ARMY! The Tatar cavalry in the Polish army consisted of real Tatars who were muslim and had freedom of faith in Poland and Lithuania. Even in this battle, they were loyal to Poland and Sobieski, even though entire Lithuanian army betrayed him, and at first didn't come to join the battle and later Poland and Lithuania had Muslim populations since the XIVth century, and exclusively muslim (Tatar) units up to XXth century, they took part in most of the conflicts Poland had during this period. Last such unit saw combat it 1939. Even back then, when people around Europe were killing each other due to differences in theological opinions, Poland and Turkey cooperated with each other on several occasions. There were both wars and periods of long peace, or even alliances, for example Crimea fought on the side of Poland in the Second Northern War, not to mention that several Polish kings such as Sigmunt August and even Jan Sobieski considered a possibility of an alliance with Turkey against their Christian enemies.

Enormous respect for Poland and its people, especially for their bravery back then. After all these years the Turks and the Polish people who once were enemies learned both from the same very mistake, trusting their neighbors only to get back stabbed later on. They might’ve been honorable enemies back then but now they are truly good neighbors on the same page when it comes to standing their grounds. After of course, during World War II when the whole Europe turned their back against the saviors of Europe (Poland). During the attacks on Poland run by the Germans the Ambassador of Hitler’s German in Turkey, Franz von Papen demanded immediate control of the Polish diplomatic building just like Czechoslovakia’s diplomatic building, which was 150 meters apart from each other. As to the Turkish president Ismet Pasa replied: “We have a traditional friendship with Poland. In the past, at the time of Poland’s partition, Turkey waited for Polish envoy’s arrival for 150 years. Now, for a short period of time, I can not disappoint our Polish friends, and Turkey shall not fulfill this demand of yours”. Today they honor one and another with full alliance to each other, no matter what.

As terrible an act as it was by Austria it to a degree was a blessing for those in the Austrian partition. The Prussian and German partitions tried to Russify and Germanify the people banning the speaking of Polish, setting up schools where children learnt either Russian or German, Polish books were destroyed whereas in the Austrian sector all the Polish there lost was their freedom but they were allowed to speak Polish and teach Polish at schools etc. Today we would say the Austrians were liberal toward the Polish whereas the Germans (Prussians) and Russians were the brutes towards the people. And people in the west wonder why Polish people did not get along with Russians and Germans in 20th century after gaining independence in 1918. After 123 years of utter brutality would you be nice to those that battered you daily?

...and two generations later Vienna entered an alliance that attacked Commonwealth from all sides and destroyed it. Emperors from Austria took Cracov, city they promised to defend, and almost reached Warsaw in the final campaign (their forces were just on the other side of the river from Wilanów, personal residence of Sobieski). The battle of Vienna rescued Holy Roman Empire and much of the Western Europe (at least Italy was in peril), but in the East sealed the fate of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, one of the few countries of the era that elected it head of state and did not fall into absolutism and authocracy. History is funny that way.

To be entirely honest, it probably turned out for the best. The PLC was going to be destroyed from the inside at the behest of Russia and Prussia and once it occurred, it was the Austrian Partition that allowed for the continuation of the Polish way of life to continue with relatively little interference, especially when we look at how it went on in Russia and Prussia where they tried to extinguish the Polish identity. Although inexcusable, Austria didn't have much of a choice in doing what they did. It was either have a piece of the pie or not and see your rivals grow stronger yet. They put matters of state before any other consideration and as such, Poland should count it's blessings that they decided to split the Pie three ways and not two for it could have been far worst.

@@MyPrideFlag Of course they were afraid of a strong and resurgent Commonwealth. As was Austria. There was no scenario in which the Commonwealth survived the century and a half of decay that it went through. Even if the reforms happened and no wars were triggered, the commonwealth would have been rife with civil disruptions, backwards economic practices and infrastructure that was, to put it bluntly, pitiful. It would have needed a generation or two to get up to par with it's western counterparts. It was tremendously wealthy, yes, but it was also tremendously decrepit to the point of being unable to make use of it's own wealth. Would Austria stand up to Russia and Prussia and support the Commonwealth? There was no way in hell they would have supported that, just look at what happened a little over a decade later with the french republic. So their options were to do nothing and see the other central powers eclipse them in power and prestige, join in the partitions and hope they didn't become a third rate power or support the very idea that was contrary to the requirements of realpolitik...
@MyPrideFlag
@MyPrideFlag Жыл бұрын
@@the_astrokhan There were 2 ways for Commonwealth to survive 18th century. The first would be reforms under Sobieski when Commonwealth was in serious decline but everyone still feared it and treated it like a major power. The second option, wait 10 years with your reforms untill Napoleon comes. I think that a strong Commonwealth instead of limited Duchy of Warsaw could turn the tide to his advantage. It would be a serious partner and ally, even if junior one. But not a small puppet state. As one historian said, constitution of 3rd May happened 100 years too late or 10 years too early. Overall I understand your reasoning but it's not a justification of Austria's action. Austria has a moral debt to Polandq and the least it can do is put a statue of Sobieski in Vienna. It was proposed but got canceled because it supposedly "could offend Turkish minority". The statue is ready and can be seen in Cracov.

Ironically, the Commonwealth and Ottomans needed each other for balance of power in Central and Eastern Europe. Poles bound Russia from the west and Habsburgs from the north, meaning neither of them could dedicate all forces to fighting Turks; and if Russians and Habsburgs had any plans against the PLC, they always had the High Porte breathing down their necks from south and east, respectively. That's why Turks helped Poland in repelling Swedish invasion, and when Cossack rebellion supported by Tatars proved "a bit too succesfull", they forced Tatars to switch sides... Sure, we beat each other quite often, but that was always about "moving the border a few miles", not total conquest (unlike with Russians and Germans). Thus, Poland's greatest internationally recognised and celebrated tryumph meant also a slow death sentence. And look at this: to march with rescue to Vienna, Sobieski had to abandon plans of reannexing treacherous Prussia (long before it became the juggernaut we know from the next two centuries, we'd have eaten them for supper)... One of future partitioners spared, another rescued, and balance of powers forever shifted in our disfavour which ultimately killed us: that is how saving Europe looks like.

I still think that the relief of Vienna was a good decision. Turkey occupied Polish lands and was a threat to Commonwealth. Sobieski beat them on a foreign territory with foreign money. But he wasted the victory. He should have tried to get some lands in Silesia or annex Prussia, Holy Roman Emperor wouldn't mind and Poland was in position to do this. Instead of Moldovan campaign which was entirely pointless he should have made a quick campaign to regain Podole and sign peace with Ottomans. And then focus on Russia and either force them to a much more advantageus peace (not give up fucking Kiev for no reason) or go to war (the first option was much better, though). After Vienna Sobieski had a very strong position. After bringing peace to Commonwealth, he should have reform the country, get rid of Liberum Veto, create a permament army with a better funding etc. But unfortunately he was a great commander but a poor polititian and a mediocre king. He was probably the last king who could have restored Commonwealth as a great European power but he wasted his chance.

Even in the very Battle of Vienna, Sobieski had Muslim military units of Polish Tatars under his command. Poland and Lithuania had exclusively Muslim military units since the XIVth century, the last such unit saw action in XXth century, to be exact when the World War II began, September 1939

All that happened, thanks to the conservation of our national language, and historical proud past glory of Polish nation, through the couple of generations of Poles, living in all three occupied territories.
