Coming to the Olympics Železný already had the world record (87.66m) and qualified himself for the finals with his first throw - 85.90m, which was an Olympic Record at the time (former record was 94.58m by Miklos Nemeth, but with the old javelin)
At the Summer Olympics held in Seoul, South Korea, Tapio Korjus took the lead early in the competition with 82.74m. In the third round Seppo Räty of Finland threw 83.26m, but then the 22 year old Jan Železný bettered it with 83.46m on his fourth throw. In his last attempt Železný threw even farther - 84.12m.
Tapio Korjus, with the very last throw of the competition, threw 84.28 meters, which meant gold for Korjus and silver medal for Jan Železný, who went on to win the next three Olympics (1992,1996,2000).
