The bridge rectifier has to dissipate the diode losses, so it's probably even a good thing that it doesn't sit flush on the board... I've seen diodes soldered in with some extra length just to improve airflow/cooling..

Yes, that's a good point. I've seen these rectifiers "floating" above boards for 1-2 cm a lot. Very common in vintage hifi components for example. I guess they just sat it flat on the board because of the limited space.

Yes this is absolutely right - diode bridges are often spaced off the board to allow airflow for cooling. It can make a significant difference. You will often find the leads are bent in an S shape to allow this to happen

Jan Beta I got an old Denon PMA-1060 from my neighbor after it suddenly stopped working and destroyed the built in fuse. Turned out the bridge rectifier (that even had a heatsink screwed on top) overheated and shortened. It might not really be the most common damage but it can happen (especially after long and heavy use)

Thanks! I love the transparent cases. They were a tad too expensive for me at the time though (especially because I wasn't that much involved with C64s then). The short boards are probably the better choice concerning heat and longevity.

No, the Reloaded doesn't have multiple kernals. I'm not sure if I'll implement it in the future, as I don't need it too much. However, to add an RGB LED with no multiple ROMs is just a crazy idea, I could add just a simple switch to select color for fun, indicating nothing :) I don't know.

Ah, I see. Something had me believe the Reloaded has a multi kernal flash ROM or something. Maybe I mixed something up. You could add a potentiometer to the LED and smoothly change colors or something. ;)

Oh, I just checked out the Reloaded's specs and yes, you were right. There's a larger EPROM chip with extra space for second ROM data (and switch between them by pressing RESTORE key), so yes, it could be done. However, the potentiometer idea sounds good!

Thanks for the information, regarding the regulators. I have ordered some heavy duty 1.5 and 2.0 amps for my SixtyClone. I have smoke tested it, however I wish to have some better regulators in my machine. Yup. Going to make sure it lasts more than 20 years. (good news for my children, if they want it when I am gone)

The voltage regulators I can understand on swapping out but the bridge rectifier didn't need swapping out. Pretty cool setup, reminds me when I use to modify game consoles and PCs.

The bridge rectifier in my VIC-20 died recently so I'm a bit paranoid about these. The VIC-20 rectifier is a lot flimsier than the one used in the C64 though. The setup is only semi-permanent sadly. I always have to rearrange things depending on what I work on as I only have the one desk.

It's a ZD-915 which is sold under a variety of brand names. Still highly recommended if you can get one. There also is a successor model which I haven't tested but it's supposedly very similar.

I am in the proces of refurbishing a C64 too, I got the non working board for free. It had faulty RAM, I replaced all of the RAM chips, working again. Replaced the voltage regulators too, it improved the picture on the screen significantly. I am also replacing the old ceramic caps, next will be the electrolytic caps and heatsinks. I have an original case from a C64C, which needs a bit of a clean. That’s going to look nice with a breadbin keyboard.

Jan Beta Yeah, it is... But, now it has a garbled screen. Keyboard works, though and I can type stuff. Basic is working. So, I suspect chip U14 has died. Replace that for a 74LS258 and see if it works again. Then I can continue the recap.

I'm hoping to build something like this for myself in the near future, possibly with the 'Reloaded MKII' motherboard, and the CPU, CIA1/2, VIC-II, and the SID sourced from elsewhere. I'm not sure how to get a keyboard, though. Used C64s seem to be extremely rare in online marketplaces where I live; and those seem to be fully functional machines sold at (unreasonably, I think) high prices.

What do the extra rom modes let you do that you can't on the standard mode? I must admit all I ever did on my old C64 was to play games and get pissed off with how long the games needed to load from tape and loading level 2 never worked.

Oh, I use them mostly for speeding up loading/saving times. JiffyDOS, EXOS and Datel are all floppy speeders basically. They often add some more useful functionality like shortcut keys or machine code monitors. Very handy if you are working with disk drives and/or an SD2IEC device for example.

+shiloh6809 Yes, I used a socket this time. It depends on the 24 pin socket you use on the main board if it fits. I actually had to cut a piece of plastic away from it after soldering it in but now it fits fine. Good luck with your build! :)

No, I don't think there is one. The C64C cases only exist because the original molds were discovered some time ago. There's little hope for the breadbin molds to turn up I guess. Plus it's really expensive making new molds.

Hey Jan, I love your videos, I've watched lots of them. Do you know of any online parts lists with manufacture name and part number for the modern replacement components? I am specifically interested in capacitors, socket, heat-sinks, ROM, IC's, etc. (basically everything you replaced on this board in this video and others). I'd like to start doing the same thing for the VIC-20 & C64 and C128. I think I've heard you say you prefer Panasonic for capacitors, what about the other components. I just want to know what to buy and which manufacturers are the best, so I can source the parts and bulk order before I start tearing into the computers.

JiffyDOS and EXOS both contain disk fastloaders, so disk reading is faster by a factor of 4× to 15×. Some games and programs don't work well with some fastloaders, so this is a convenient way of switching between them.

Yes, there are some fastloaders that are supported by the SD2IEC. Final Cartridge 3 works and Jiffy works, too. Haven't tried others but Jiffy is really fast that's why I use it a lot.

75€ shipped to the UK, 135€ with two joysticks. Oh so very tempting. Ironically, it's the 'perfect' copy of the original that is bothering me. I've seen replacement Amiga cases where the screw holes had brass inserts. If you aren't planning on opening it too much, I guess it's OK.

Yeah, the prices are pretty reasonable. Otherwise I wouldn't have bought one I think. I also like the colors much better than the former Kickstarter cases (except maybe the clear one). They didn't use brass inserts to keep it as close to the original as possible I think. The plastic is of much better quality than the one used for the original so I think it can take quite some screwing and unscrewing until it breaks.

Oh, unfortunately the video output is partially generated in the modulator circuit so you have to build a replacement circuit to toss the modulator. Video on that topic is coming up soon(ish). :)

I use different ROMs all the time for fastloader functionality and also the function keys have commands on them for most of them. I have to make another ROM for this some time though because I need DolphinDOS on there for one of my 1541s that has the Dolphin hardware. That's a very fast fastloader with a parallel cable. ;)

Exactly. The EPYX cart is an external fastloader that works the same as an internal fastloader kernal. I haven't used it but I think it also has commands on the function keys etc. :)

Oh, that sounds like a nice color combo, too. I think the clear cases were only available in the first kickstarter thing. The case I'm using is from the next (no kickstarter) project that was started in a German C64 forum.

The bridge rectifier in my VIC 20 went bad recently so I decided it would be a good idea to do some preventive maintenance and put an oversized one in the C64. These get quite hot in normal use so they won't live forever. After all they're just a couple of diodes as you mentioned.

Oh, and I recapped the modulator, too. I found that it improves the video output quality (at least for the S-video) quite a bit.

They are usually pretty sturdy but they run hot constantly. I've seen a couple of the 5V ones fail (especially on 250407 boards like this one) with destructive effects (they basically blow up the VIC-II) so I tend to replace them lately.

If they did that and someone with a lot of cash could front the money, Western Design Center [WDC] would do a production run. Bill Mensch was the co-creator of the 6502 and its support chips and he even said in his Antic Podcast interview that he'd definitely do runs of Commodore and Atari custom chips if it were possible.

Why even leave the RF modulator in? I realize that keeps the unit in a more "original" state, but doesn't just ripping it out entirely dramatically improve audio and video output on the baseband A/V port? (I also see people using the modulator's space for other mods like jacks for stereo SID output, etc.) EDIT: Read up a bit more and apparently some -- but not all -- C64 revisions pass baseband video through the modulator before reaching the A/V port, so you have to add some simple circuitry there if you want to replace it. Also read that some revisions bypass the modulator and on those you can remove it and just take Y/C and audio from the A/V port.

The RF modulator processes the raw signal from the VIC-II and actually provides the signal for both the A/V jack (two component pins and one composite pin) and the RF output. So you can't exactly rip it out, but you can replace it with a smaller board that gives you S-Video and mono/stereo SID out. Google around for "C64 S-Video Mod".

I really like your videos, but must be honest….hint …hint Your English is very poor and it is quite frustrating to understand what you are saying. Why can’t you put more effort into it? It doesn’t help that you giggle consciously while you talk. It’s really bad form. You are not 14yrear old are you? Not supposed to laugh at one’s own joke. ha ha ha ha haa

Thanks for your honesty. I'm trying my best to get better with the overall quality of the vids. Don't really know if I can (or want) to stop the giggling. Maybe I am 14 at heart (which I don't really consider a bad thing)...
