You get the feeling Dalton is the only Rochester who actually read the book properly, or understood the character entirely. I've enjoyed other portrayals such as Toby Stephens, Michael Fassbender and Orson Welles, however there always seemed an element missing. For example Fassbender is too morose and drawling, and Stephens not dark and brooding enough. Dalton just nails the character in every way (except being a little too tall and handsome, but hey! It would be churlish to complain about that lol). He doesn't gloss over the character's flaws, he can be genuinely scary, volatile and manipulative, but in turn humorous, vulnerable, caring and passionate. Such a depth of understanding of the character and excellent interpretation and performance is just a joy to behold for lovers of the original book.

Please NEVER forget that Timothy Dalton reads the novels of characters whom he portrays. Just as he did with Bond, think how he read Charlotte's words, devoured each then perfected the character. The late Alexander Baron's adaptation is the closest to what she wrote. Alas, so much was left out. I wish they'd been given more time. I wanted to see the shopping spree to Millcote that the others show. They jumped from the proposal to the almost marriage without the month in between. I'm proud of three sisters whose words created memorable characters for without them we'd not have Rochester from Charlotte nor Emily's Heathcliff from 'Wuthering Heights' or Anne's 'The Tenant of Wildfell Hall' whose hero was Gilbert Markham. Actor Toby Stephens portrayed both Rochester and Markham. One prayer on my bucket list is to not only visit their home but also the moors. I've always wondered if the crazy wife was based on the woman with whom Branwell Bronte was in love. As I said, the writer must never be forgotten for without them, the characters cannot emerge. ¬ Janet Thompson Deaver
@anyaw34026 күн бұрын
Don't forget that Dalton played both Heathcliff and Rochester! I do not like Wuthering Heights, as I don't believe Emily Bronte portrayed enough of Heathcliff's childhood, or Heathcliff's and Catherine's relationship to allow me to understand Heathcliff's behavior in the rest of the novel - BUT Dalton's portrayal of him was absolutely heartbreaking. His portrayal made me understand what Emily was trying to portray in this novel.

7:55 he looks HOTTER than ever with the shaggy hair! 19:31 "Am I hideous, Jane?" "Yes sir, you always were you know." ARE YOU BLIND, JANE???? Anyway... This is the CLOSEST and most accurate adaptation of the book. It really stuck to the original novel and the story. Majority of characters (overwhelming majority) looked the way the were described as in the book in their looks, coloring, stature and age. Costuming was spot on and the settings were again, close to the books driscription though Thornfield was a mite too cheerful looking. The best actors were definitely Timothy Dalton as the refined, moody and very passionate Mr. Rochester - my only complaint was that he sometimes OVER-acts/stage-acts...still, his performance was excellent overall. He brought this gentlemanly yet roguish quality. He was mannered yet you can feel the passion running through his veins. Definitely a great choice for the character and one of the BEST Rochester's I've ever seen. FAR too handsome...but I'm not complaining! (And Dalton truly is a terribly handsome man and his voice and stature - yaaas!) The other stand out was the man who played St John Rivers. He did a truly masterful job of really embodying the coldness, the reserve - the ice of his character as in the book. Not only that, but he looked closest to how he was described in the book - like a deathly marble, blond statue. The best St John I've seen in ANY J.E adaptation. I have to be honest though - Jane was the letdown in this. At times I felt she was fine, but looking back at the full performance...she was too mousy, quiet and emoted far too little. She lacked passion - and next to Dalton with his flair for dramatics, she was like a pale little shadow. Lookswise she was a good choice (though a trifle too old) but the acting, the range and emotion was lacking. She was far too repressed unfortunately and it shows. I also did NOT like the silly soundtrack! Whomever composed the score for this adaptation feel short...greatly! The music was laughable at times and came across as dated and (most humorously) cheesy. There is not one piece that is memorable or likable in the score - such a shame, because a good backing score would have only added to the miniseries! Overall, this was a great adaptation of Jane Eyre, I did enjoy it regardless of my complaints - thanks a lot. I'll give it an 8/10. It is now tied for first place with the 2006 adaptation which I strongly recommend for another superb telling of the book.

Sarcastic Sugar I agree with your opinion. Rochester and St John were portrayed according to the novel, but Jane’s character, although good, lack of emotion. But I still think this version is the best Jane Eyre, much better than 2006, if you think it’s tied.

Do you know the 1973 adaptation? The best for mě...

I love this adaptation so much more than the crass and loud Orson Welles. And that's saying a lot considering the man was a fantastic actor! BUT...Timothy Dalton was my favorite James Bond and there was always something dark and brooding about him. He was well cast in this role. Thank you for this. It's lovely. I'll watch it again!

Mine too! Shame he only did 2 Bond movies. He's overlooked as Bond, I remember he brought a new excitement and sexiness compared to Roger Moore's aging Bond. Forget that one in between.

This is perhaps one of the most exquisite and beautiful performance by Dalton and Clark on Charlotte Bronte' literary masterpiece Jane Eyre.

Would you agree that this masterpiece asks the very questions humanity fails to posit when seeking true love? Even today?
@Lena-gm6my5 жыл бұрын
Yes. Most true. Today passion / sex comes first and is misinterpreted with love.
@OreadNYC4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. The character of Jane is a woman who understands that love in its highest form is selfless to the extent that it actually derives genuine, profound happiness from giving without requiring a return but that it does not mean giving up your sense of self -- your needs, your feelings, your self-respect, your values. The highest form of love also demands that you fully acknowledge the other person's right to their own needs, feelings, choices, and values even if you might not understand or agree with them. This is where Rochester makes a grievous mistake with Jane. He admires her for her gentle, compassionate nature because most of the people he has known have been self-serving whereas she is selfless. However, the stronger his emotional investment in her becomes and the greater his desire to have her in his life, the more he loses sight of who she really is and what her needs are. By choosing to avoid telling her he is married, he ironically and inadvertently ends up doing the same thing to her that his father and his brother did to him even though his motives are better than theirs were (since he sincerely believes that he loves Jane and that she will be happy with him). Their relationship in the beginning is doomed from the start because it's based on a lie. Rochester, by withholding information from her, manipulated her into making the choice which was best for him and convinced himself that it would be the best for her as well when it would have been anything but. If the news had come out after Rochester married Jane that he was already married, he would most likely have been arrested. Their marriage would be declared invalid and she'd almost certainly have been ruined both professionally and socially.

The actress playing Jane eyre is good and emotional and passionate but she looks so classic. I suppose it was her hat and dress and the lack of make up .She was dressed in a victorian style and looked older but i think that many women had this style. Timothy dalton is gorgeous as for him even with his hideous eye..lol! It is a brilliant scene anyway.Thanks.

It is a great adaptation and quite faithful to the book. The only issue, as with most of the the film and tv adaptations, is that Rochester is not supposed to be a handsome man.

"...1997 was so bad. ." AGREED! I started to watch that dog and was appalled at all the short-cuts it took in the dialogue and plot/character development. It undermined all the subtlety of the dynamics between Jane and Mr. R. Glad to found this one. One of my all time favorite heroines. Thanks for posting.

Agree with you, only i love the outdoor scene in the book more as Jane was sitting on Mr Rochester's knee, and bantering back and forth about St. John. That scene was far more cute in my head as i read it in the book, and I was a bit disappointed when i see that Jane are not on his knee in this version.
