Thank you for this upload. Welles was stunning and sexy. Joan Fontaine, despite not at all meeting the plainness criteria for Jane, held her own in terms of vulnerability and courage. My favorite Eyre - tho I confess to finding something grand in each of them. Lastly, read the book! It's as good as any in our language, imo.

The best version of Jane Eyre. Such feeling between them. Fills my heart with longing to have experienced what she did. Wish Orson was still with us. He was great all his life till the very end.

A most wonderful production. So thrilling hearing his voice calling for Jane. Orson was the best version of Rochester.

Orson Welles may not have had the looks of a matinee idol, but he had such a dynamic presence and a gorgeous deep voice. What a kiss he planted on Joan Fontaine. Wow! Too bad this ending is not in sync.

Orson Welles and Joan Fontaine were perfect in their roles. And this movie is the best version of Jane Eyre.

Still one of the best versions, Orson Wells' incarnation of Rochester's wild, passionate and desperate soul is tremendously convicting.

They could not have done better if they had cast Lord Byron himself in the role. And Byron was only half as beautiful as Welles is in this part.

Welles and Fontaine masterfully projected the other worldliness of the Rochester-Jane Eyre relationship. Welles is excellent as the tormented soul who longs to be free to love. This is love that surpasses all understanding, not a passionate sexual attraction, but complete unconditional acceptance of the recognition of the other as myself reflected in the complete realization of love as seeing all the vulnerabilities of the beloved and still loving them.

I agree with Marybeth to being one of the best kisses of all time, only I wish they could get the sound matched up with the movements. The timing of the music with the kiss means everything.

I totally DISAGREE! If anyone was "Edward Fairfax Rochester" it IS Timothy Dalton! The entire teleplay fits him as does Charlotte Bronte's Novel JANE EYRE word for word! ~ Janet Thompson Deaver

I agree that Orson Welles may have suited this part because he is by no means good looking or attractive. I think he is awful and that proposal scene is so bad. Maybe Timothy dalton is way too handsome compared to the character in the book but he certainly portrays Rochester so well. ( we do like our heroes to be handsome). I have watched most of the versions of Jane Eyre and no one but no one can compare with Timothy Dalton. He is Rochester and will always be tip top for me. All the others pale into insignificance.

I think Orson Welles is good looking in this movie. They are both supposed to NOT be good looking. So since you think he wasn't good looking then that is how he was supposed to be in this story anyway.

Sorry but Dalton had no passion or angst. Orson was the epitome of a handsome man. His voice alone would make a woman swoon over him. Cute looking actors with no soul is what we get today.

@@beverlymccollum8861 I always gravitate towards this version. Yes, the lines from the book, many, were made up just for this version. I've come to the conclusions that sometimes collaberations come up with a better story. It is like many people love the 40s version of "Madame Bovary". It, too, is very different from the book but you can absolutely relate to everything that is happening in that movie. And, of course, these two films -- just to name two -- truly show how the emotion in the film is matched up with the soundtrack and, of course, when it comes to that few do it better than Herrmann and Rozsa. I would say that most movie music today is as soul-less as the actors of today.
