Best known as the young, golden-haired woman living alongside humankind’s closest relatives, this scientist-turned-activist has devoted her life to understanding, and working to save chimpanzees from near extinction. Her unorthodox methods of observation revolutionized how scientists conduct animal research in the wild, debunked long-held assumptions about primate behavior, and showed the world how much we have in common with the animal kingdom.

That there isn't a Nobel Prize specific enough towards individuals who make it their life's work to protect the earth and the other inhabitants who don't have a voice, is an absolute shame. There should be. She should have one. Great video!

Great names. Greater still the recognition that you believe there is a need for such an award. Perhaps if enough people do and some with the right paths open to them show that need to others, it can become a reality.

Absolutely agree. I was her academic grandchild and met her while studying at university, looking back I think she was part of the reason I decided to quite the direction I'd been heading, and that had been making me miserable. I'm now working on becoming an animal behaviourist and her story was hugely inspiring, so honoured to have been able to listen to her talk

In high school, I knew a guy who used to keep and take care of garden snakes. He then noticed that there were behaviors that nobody knew about. He would later catalog these behaviors and they turned out to be actual scientific discoveries. He would later go on to meet Jane Goodall herself and appear in a newspaper article called, “10 people that Jane Goodall admires”. There is even a picture of him sitting next to her. Edit: cleaned up some of the grammar.

Jane Goodall is a Terrestrial treasure. I know she's British but for some reason that feels like it's too small a word to describe her place of origin. If one wanted an example to show what a true "global citizen" is, you could not ask for a better representation than Jane Goodall. When I was a kid, every year on my birthday different members of my family would re-up my National Geographic subscription and I remember the excitement I felt every time she or her work were the subject of an issue. For someone that is so soft spoken and seemingly uncomfortable with constant recognition, a better spokesperson for the importance of conservation and the interconnectedness of life on Earth couldn't have been created in a lab or by the greatest writers in Hollywood. She's a person that will, for a while at least, make the world feel impoverished by her loss when she dies. What she's done over the decades in the name of conservation and ecology will never receive a full accounting simply because it's impossible to measure the effects she has had on younger biologists as well as inspiring those in unrelated fields. She's a reminder of the best humanity has to offer. She's a reminder that humanity can raise itself above our petty squabbles and power plays by simply listening and observing that which makes our planet such an amazing place to live and that we should take none of it for granted. Thank you again for another wonderful episode Biographics team. You are truly doing the god's work. Keep it up.

THANK YOU, SIMON & TEAM! Jane Goodall has been one of my heroes all my life. I remember watching her on a National Geographic Special on TV back in the mid- to late-60s. I was FASCINATED with her and the chimps. I mean, here was this young, BEAUTIFUL English lady living deep in the bush with a tribe of chimps. It seemed both crazy and like the most wonderful life ever! I remember being allowed to stay up very late one summer night so that I could watch Ms. Goodall on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. I didn't just adore her, I wanted to _be_ her! I wanted to be trusted by the chimps and live among them. I wanted to play with the youngsters and cuddle with the babies. I wanted to protect them from harm, treat their wounds, and keep them safe from the outside world. I have nothing but respect for Ms. Goodall and I hope she's as happy as she deserves to be in her golden years. (I am glad she still has her family home. I sleep every night in the bedroom I came home from the hospital to when I was born. It's very comforting to live in the "family home" all of one's life.) Ms. Goodall will be remembered as the Champion of Chimpanzees forever.

I'm so glad I've found your biographics. I subscribed and instead of doing what I should be doing today, I will probably partake of a biographic binge. I've always been intrigued with Jane Goodall, the woman herself, plus her research. Being dedicated through out my life to animal rights and promoting their humane treatment, as an animal conservationist, concerned about preserving our ecosystems around the world, Jane's accomplishments to maintain the Chimpanzees' habitat has been an inspiration to me. Jane's understanding of the BIG PICTURE seeing that human needs had to be in the equation, was ground breaking. Thank you so much for this very concise but fascinating bio of Jane. I enjoyed it very much. Every individual matters. Every individual has a role to play. Every individual makes a difference. Only if we understand, will we care. Only if we care, will we help. Only if we help shall all be saved. The least I can do is speak out for those Who can not speak for themselves. Jane Goodall

With all of the unrest occurring in South Africa right now, I find myself most concerned about the chimps at the Jane Goodall Institute South Africa. That is the location where Chimp Eden, a show on Animal Planet, was filmed. It's a wonderful sanctuary for nearly a hundred chimpanzees that had been orphaned, kept in captivity or often abused.

Do you know what I find even more endearing about Jane? Is that she could take a silly poke at her and her career. If anyone remembers Larson's comic strips "The Far Side", there are two apes as a couple who the female found one of Jane's hairs on her partner's pelt and said something along the lines of "So you're still doing "Research" with that Goodall woman?!" So many many people got up in arms about this strip, yet Jane instead of being offended, actually found it funny and that told people not to take it as an insult to her or her work. She knew that it was meant as a silly comic strip, and it wasn't directly fired at her or what she does. It takes a confident and mature person to take a joke posed simply as a silly spoof.

One of Louis Leakey's inspirations to the possibility of closer study and observation of wild animals, which led to the "Trimates" (Goodall, Dian Fossey, and Birutė Galdikas), was the work of George Adamson with lions. You may have heard of him and the lion cub he raised and successfully reintroduced to the wild in the late 1950s. Elsa was the lion, and "Born Free" was the movie telling their story.
