This is the best execution of this song I have seen, yet. She pays attention to every word, phrase and lyric she sing. Others, including Peters, seem to pass over some ideas that would go through Mabel's head like they've done it dozens of times. I see this from professionals all the time. Krakowski manages, through all the rehearsals and performances, to keep it fresh and new like it is the first time she/Mabel had these thoughts. She's not acting, she's reacting which is what I try to get out of all my actors.

I love this song. After years of listening to the Bernadette Peters original it was nice to see Jane Krakowski and company bring it to life.

She, like so many on Broadway are so talented yet so underrated. If you look at "clicks" for people on Broadway versus someone like Taylor Swift, they will have about 98% less views. Yet they are so much more talented than most singers today and they do it LIVE with no lip singing and mixers to make them sound better than they actually are. I wish Jane would do some concerts outside of NY City.

Jane Krakowski is really good; I'd like to see her do more leading lady spots. This is a musical that I've heard, but never seen. it has such good music that I always wondered why it wasn't particularly successful. It doesn't strike me that a down ending should be so hard to take.. you just brighten it up with the finale bows so people leave the theater happy.

I suspect the libretto has other problems besides the downbeat ending. It doesn’t seem particularly picant (sp).. she’s discovered, has romance with director which fails, and dies of TB. Through in some drugs and you have literally hundreds of competing stage works. Needed a hook, probably wittier interchanges, and a hook. Maybe a more surreal treatment. But this was a 70’s nostalgia piece back then and those can have little room for gravity. Remember we had just left Vietnam in failure and ther is little in Mabel Norman’s story which lends itself to addressing the war, societal woe. And escapist shows can’t work with drug addiction and TB without a more sardonic take. Jerry Herman just was tha sort. With JHerman gone, the work could probably be fleshed out better with a little more post modern angst and tragedy.

I've loved this show since I bought the original cast album in high school back in 1974. My drama teacher liked it so much, he almost stole it from me. I saw a local production the next year in San Jose. It was done with the original ending. Even though it was criticized about its dark subject matter, I've always liked the contrast between that and the bright music. Later, I found out that Mabel Normand was a cousin. Thank you for posting this.

Lovely. It's great to see someone doing it well and not just impersonating Ms. Peters.

She’s terrific - I love seeing her in theatre every now and then. First saw her in Grand Hotel. Chorus is a bit rough around the edges here though.

Remember this is really not a full she treatment; think it was a short run to feel the waters for a full revival. But She was available for a whole show.

And right behind Ms. Krakowski in her striped tie is the incomparable Miss Mississippi, Monica Louwerens. I graduated high school with her sister. As kind as she is talented.

Jane is fantastic, and it's not just Jane singing; she's also inhabiting the part. The only (minor) distraction is that Mabel Normand was a brunette, but Jane is so charming it's an easy omission to overlook.

@@nycsguy Thanks for your comment. My introduction to this musical was buying the original cast vinyl LP when it was first put on sale in Sydney.

I saw this many many years ago at Kenley Players in Warren, Ohio....I don't remember who played the leads but I fell in love with the music and the show....I don't know why it failed , butI know some critics thought the book was weak and the storyline was too dark.....I wish they would revisit it on Broadway...

Is it just me or does Jane Krakowski always wear extra high character shoes? They're pretty high in She loves Me too

I'm just guessing, but maybe she's pretty short and due to her casting type it works for her to be a little taller?

Saw a couple of these Reprise! shows. They charged big theatre rates for community theatre quality + a few notable names. Evidence here: Oafish staging, ragged chorus, crummy pit band. Krakowski is nice but she has no investment.

Agreed. It all felt super flat.

Blame the director, who was a favorite of theirs, blame the choreographer, blame trying to make it seem like they're doing a production without sets or good costumes, but off book. That was always the problem here.

I love this show and I love Krakowski. But this production looked terrible and she was not suitable for this part.
@richardmayora12894 жыл бұрын
She is PERFECT for this role. The production looks awful but I can hardly think of anyone more appropriate. She overdoes the accent but that was fixable.
