Dudes- Nothing's Shocking is a stone cold classic and waaaaaaay ahead of its time. It had such a huge influence on grunge and all the other alternative rock that followed. Also, I think you guys are way underrating Perry Farrell as a vocalist and lyricist. Oh and by the way, there is some stuff on the live album that should not be ignored: 'Trip Away,' 1%,' and ''My Time' are some of my favorites of theirs

At the risk of being the get off my lawn guy, yeah many of these acts had to be experienced at the time to appreciate the severe deviation from the norm. It’s the zeitgeist moment and ya just gotta be there for it.

They were a needed dose of creativity for the hard rock scene in the late 80s. I drove through a massive snowstorm to see them at a small club in early '89 - less than 200 people made the trip -- and it remains an all-time, top-ten performance. 5. Jane Says 4. Ted, Just Admit It 3. Three Days 2. Then She Did... 1. Summertime Rolls

Imo, live performance is the true measure of a band. Anyone with a modicum of musical talent can go into a studio with an experienced producer and come out with something good. But to move an audience to rapture with nothing but your voice and your instrument, that will always be the pinnacle to me.

@@AbbeyRoadkill1 Totally agree re: live. After having seen hundreds of concerts over the decades, that I still see that JA performance as a top-tier gig speaks (to me) of how impressive they really were. I remember how refreshing it was to first hear those first few albums and see them translate to the stage. They were a unique hybrid of funk, rock, and psychedelia that broke from the norms of the day.

Hi TLM guys. Glad to see you have the Jam upcoming. Could I suggest for the Jam listography that you include the album "Snap" the very crucial singles/best of compilation ( officially released , or at least signed off , by the band after their break up in 1983) ? So along with the 6 studio albums , would be great if you could include it. Would be a shame to not include many of their singles /b-sides not available on their albums ( much like you did with the Smiths compilation "Louder than Bombs"). There's at least an album's worth of non-album singles and b-sides that were vital to what they were about. Thanks for all the work you guys do. Love the channel

Bought the debut album on the strength of a review that noted how they married the VU and Led Zeppelin. The latter's influence seems more obvious, musically speaking, but I think Lou Reed's willingness to take on any subject matter is reflected in Farrell's lyrics. If y'all would've included it (I consider it their real debut album) you could've done a proper full week, but it's all good. I bought all three of their initial albums as soon as they were released, so I really liked them back in their heyday. Don't listen to them as much anymore because I am an old fart now, but I still think they are good with Jane Says being my favorite song for all the reasons Joe discussed. It's got the seed of a great short story in it, and I'm a sucker for those types of songs. Plus the empathetic treatment of the characters in this little play is impressive. Ferrell doesn't punch down at people going through some shit, so I gotta give him great credit for that. I hate saying this type of thing, but I do think they are a little "you had to be there" kind of phenomenon. I think they are acclaimed partly because of what was going on in music at the time. They were distinct. If anybody else sounded like them, I don't know who it might've been. They were certainly not like anything else I had heard at the time. Perhaps artists who followed them and were influenced by them made them sound passe, and as a result they don't seem quite as good now as they sounded then?

the fact that they sounded caught between the 80's and 90's sound is why i always loved this band.

Big Jane's fan here, thought I'd share my list (I include the debut because it is predominantly material exclusive to it, kind of like Neil Young's Rust Never Sleeps) 5. The Great Escape Artist - Not a bad record at all, just didn't stick with me. 4. Strays - Fairly maligned record, but has lots of great stuff. True Nature and Hypersonic are killer tracks. 3. Jane's Addiction - The atmosphere on this album is exceptional. The rockers are rough and tumble, and the quiet moments are beautiful. I Would for You and 1% are crucial. 2. Nothing's Shocking, 1. Ritual de lo Habitual - These are top thirty albums of all time for me, both five-star records. The only difference for me is sentimental--I got on board with Ritual and that record, in particular, is just perfect top to bottom. That said, Nothing's Shocking is pretty flawless. The vinyl version doesn't include Pigs in Zen, and it should have all along. Top ten tracks: 1. Three Days 2. Jane Says 3. I Would for You 4. Summertime Rolls 5. Stop 6. Classic Girl 7. Mountain Song 8. True Nature 9. 1% 10. Ted, Just Admit It

Albums: Same as Jason, Nothing Shocking is #1, followed closely by Ritual. NS made honorable mention for me in 1988. I have a lot of nostalgia for that album. As a high schooler, my buddies and I were avid mountain bikers and that cassette saw repeated action in the truck when we’d load up to go out on a ride (circa 1991-1993). Songs: 1. Mountain Song 2. Been Caught Stealing 3. Jane Says 4. Standing in the Shower….thinking 5. Pigs in Zen

Oh to be a music fan in SoCal in the 80s: X, Go Go's, Bangles, Dream Syndicate, Fishbone, Blasters, Minutemen, fIREHOSE, Los Lobos, Black Flag, Rain Parade, Green on Red, Long Ryders, Jane's Addiction, Guns 'n Roses, Pontiac Brothers, Oingo Boingo, N.W.A., the Untouchables, the Gun Club, Redd Kross, Opal, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Social Distortion, Ice-T, Bad Religion, Circle Jerks, and then Motley Crue, Poison and Sunset Strip glam metal. That's a helluva lineup in my book. A musical hangover from the riches of the 70s.

Three Days is one of the best rock songs ever written, hands down. They faded from their best pretty quickly (after two albums - both five stars for me) but I do think they're incredibly good writers. Powerful music, great lyrics, great melodies, great drumming. Janes Says, Been Caught Steeling, Mountain Song, Summertime Rolls, Nothing's Shocking, Ocean Size - all match pretty well with the best of the 90s and other well-known bands of the time. They just couldn't quite keep the consistency up. I love Perry Ferrell though.

Could easily switch 2 and 3 around but would still give #1 the nod, but not by a lot. 5 songs: Jane Says; Summertime Rolls; Three Days; Ted, Just Admit It...; Classic Girl. I like many, many more songs of theirs though. Still an enjoyable listen, and Of Course is mesmerizing.

@19:16 - "I actually have Nothing's Shocking at #2"..... lolz (Probably from beg to end, one of the top 3 greatest alternative musical works of art in the last 50 years) It's funny how people have such different reactions/opinions to music - it makes it fun to discuss to be sure. And i can understand if Perry's voice isn't for you - but his vocals (delay effect) have always sent the whole F'n thing to the moon for me personally.... as in chillz back in the day with the cans on. They truly captured the "feeling" of a very special era in music (late 80's early 90's) Incredibly epic/intense and artistic like nothing i had ever heard before and tracked perfectly on NS. Nothing's Shocking is my personal favorite record of all time w/ Siamese Dream and maybe only Kid A in the conversation and i'm a massive Pixies fan - so it was very difficult to leave them out of my top 3. Ritual's a very cool record too and it's excellent in it's own right - but doesn't flow as well as NS did for me. It felt more like a collection of some amazing different tracks vs a truly cohesive album like NS did for me. Jane's original XXX live record was off the F'n charts as well... TripAway/1%/My Time/RocknRoll/Sympathy/Wouldforyou - sick. their early show were just off the chain. and if you really want a treat - go listen to their cover of their cover of the Dead's "Ripple"

Perry Farrell - the Brave One; Warrior Poet Never afraid to confront politics, sex and spirituality in his music and make you listen. His voice makes me Feel. Jane’s Addiction and Porno For Pyros were love at first listen in my teenage years. The film Gift was also an early introduction to his art. Psi Com I had on cassette and I really think I wore it out. I love this early sound and if you’re a fan of Jane’s or PFP and haven’t heard Psi Com, you really should. Jane's is one of my favorite bands; for what they did, and (like Jason said) for what one knows they probably could have done. I think one reason they later Jane's albums are pretty generic is because Perry was getting all his yucks out with his solo albums. So they didn't really challenge themselves anymore. I also think that not having Eric A in the band made the difference between brilliance and passable. I can easily see how Perry can come off as a bit annoying, but he was the visionary. Eric A was his conscience though. It was almost one of those perfect bands, the chemistry. You have the flashy, endlessly imaginative guitarist, the very strong drummer, and the purist bassist. While Navarro's reputation has taken massive hits, I do think he proved that it was not only Perry who elevated him, when he joined and dominated in the RHCP. I'm not sure which album I prefer: Ritual and Shocking are both strong from front to back. Of the other two I think "Escape Artist" is much better than 'Strays'. And while "triple XXX" is a live album IMO it has to be ranked in their main catalog. Some of their best songs 'Whores", "1%", "I Would for U", the hotter version of "Pigs in Zen" are on it. And "My Time". Forgot about favorite songs: Three Days - Joe said "as epic as alternative music gets", great quote. "Whores" - great rocker; love the lyrics "Obvious" - it has that piano banging; the vocals echoing each other; it's the one forgotten track from Ritual. Love it. "Aint' no Right" - love that Flanger "Classic Girl" - beautiful; they did great ballads at times. But # 1 absolutely is 'Up the Beach' - I saw them do it live the first time when my band opened for them, and I was floored. Still am.

I think the boys did a good job of justifying a 4disc listography by putting the band in the correct cultural milieu and importance for the age. I think Jason nailed it had they started 5 years later they would have found better form bouncing ideas off bands that came later. Also would just say I came of age in that 1988-1991 and you could actually feel the trends changing by watching MTV and it was a weird period. I always think pf 1990-1991 as an age where Paisley was briefly popular - it was a weird time.

I'm still a big fan though I don't listen to them as often as I used to. Saw them live - they were thoroughly professional and kicked major ass. * The debut is a live album but it consists of previously unreleased material so it counts. They also did overdubs in the studio and added crowd noise from an entirely different concert. * Strays grew on me considerably this time around. I didn't really take to it before but I think it's great now. It's definitely a step towards more conventional alt-rock compared to their previous two towering masterpieces, but it's got great production from Bob Ezrin featuring a lot of cool electronic touches to go with some great songs. The title track is the weakest link, but still a good song. * The Great Escape Artist is an interesting change for the band. Describing the album's overall aesthetic, Perry Farrell noted: "it's a strange mixture of that post-punk Goth darkness that Jane's had, with what's going on today with groups like Muse and Radiohead. As much as I want to appease fans and make old Jane's fans love me, I just can't help myself from moving forward." (from Wikipedia) Dave Sitek of TV on the Radio co-produced and played some bass, keyboards and programming on the record. My favorite song on the album is "Splash a Little Water on It" which sounds incredible. It's about a guy who wakes up to find his girlfriend overdid it on drugs or alcohol the night before and has choked to death on her own vomit and he is in denial about it (that's how I see it anyway). * Cheers mates!!!!!! 10) I Would for You (Jane's Addiction) 09) Twisted Tales (The Great Escape Artist) 08) Up the Beach (Nothing's Shocking) 07) Ocean Size (Nothing's Shocking) 06) Splash a Little Water on It (The Great Escape Artist) 05) Pigs In Zen (Jane's Addiction) 04) Whores (Jane's Addiction) 03) Stop (Ritual De Lo Habitual) 02) Then She Did... 1st by skipping the 1st/live album you miss GREAT material. After Ritual they lost what made them them. 1%, My Time, I would For You, Trip Away, Chip Away were awesome. Their covers of Lou Reed and The Stones were fun. Its def better than the last 2 albums and gives you more material to review. Its how I was introduced to Janes in the 80s. Back in the 80s and into 90s it was on every shelf, just a smaller label so it now looks like it wasn't official. It was; please find it and listen! Kramzer I would only give you hate if you said you didn't like *Stephen Perkins*!! Guys, I dont believe you even mention his name!! He is the BEST drummer/percussionist of his time. "Ted Just admit it" is his playground! Idiots Rule, Trip Away, Chip Away, Standing in the Shower, Ocean Size, Aint no Right, 3 Days etc etc hes great. He REALLY comes into form when he breaks off w Perry to do Porno For Pyros. I would listen to their 1st album and its Stephen and Martin LeNobles' world. Check it out. Hes ridic on it (Mejia, Cursed Male, Cursed Female, Bad Sh*t, Blood Rag) . Also check out his work with Infectious Grooves (with Mike Muir post-FNM Jim Martin and pre-Metallica Robert Trujillo) on their 1st album Then She Did is def best song! ha ha being the "alternative cool guy", loving Janes before they were known, made it tough to endure the overplaying of Jane Says (Cant listen to it now) and especially the Beavis and Butthead juvenility of Been Caught Stealing. UGH. No thank you. Overplayed Lastly, Joe, I dunno if you knew this about Ritual's album cover but yeah it was on Tipper Gore's list and they actually released a generic white cover with just the band name bc the PMRC backlash. The Great Escape Artist (2011) 2.5/5 CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER: 5.0 Nothing's Shocking (1988) 4.0 Ritual de lo Habitual (1990) 3.0 Strays (2003) 2.5 The Great Escape Artist (2011) I've been a Jane's fan since my high school days in the late 1980s. Their debut was a game-changer, being one of the first albums to unite punks and metalheads under the same banner. I love the middle section (tracks 4 to 7) of Ritual de Lo Habitual (as well as the opener, "Stop") but that album doesn't get past 4 stars because I'm not enthusiastic about the other songs. I hadn't heard their two reunion LPs until this week. I found them passable but nowhere near compelling. Overall, I love these guys. But given that their initial run was only 2 albums they would not be a candidate for my all-time top 100. TOP 10 SONGS: 1. Been Caught Stealing 2. Pigs In Zen 3. Summertime Rolls 4. Three Days 5. Then She Did... 6. Jane Says 7. Mountain Song 8. Stop! 9. Ted, Just Admit It... 10. Trip Away HMs: Obvious, I Would For You, Ocean Size, Slow Divers, Everybody's Friend, Up The Beach, Idiots Rule, So What!, Strays, City, To Match The Sun MY RATING SYSTEM: 5.0 = major classic (consistently great *and* stratospheric highs) 4.5 = minor classic (consistently great *or* stratospheric highs, but not both) 4.0 = great (more than 50% is worth revisiting and it's an essential record for this artist/style - passes my "it'll make a fan out of someone who's new to this artist" test) 3.5 = seriously good (more than 50% is worth revisiting) 3.0 = nominally good (less than 50% is worth revisiting) 2.5 = decent (competent but uninspired - not worth revisiting) 2.0 = poor (difficult listen) 1.5 = awful (can't finish it) 1.0 = historically awful (musical apocalypse) *Note: "Consistently" does not mean "flawlessly." I allow for a few clunkers if the rest of the songs are good enough. Also, I don't go below 1 star because once I'm in the realm of the truly terrible I don't care to differentiate anymore.

I felt Nothing's Shocking was overplayed before I had a chance to appreciate it (being local rock heroes probably contributed to hearing their music everywhere). looking back, I didn't give them a fair chance, and perhaps I should. I remember hearing Porno for Pyros and thinking it was genuinely funny in a good way (lyrics especially). and I think the Chili Peppers were genuinely friends and colleagues as it appears they traded members e few times. also, I've heard they collaborated with Ice-T's Body Count to cover a Sly & the Family Stone song. "Briefly fleetingly interesting" is a 5 star comment by Kramz. JA is not great band. I don't know this band well but well enough to know that they are not great, mainly due to the songwriting. I think "Jane Says" is their masterpiece and they have a few pretty decent songs. One song that annoys me was the video "Been Caught Stealing". Some parts might be a little catchy but overall I dislike the sound and it might be amusing but it's not hilarious. I know many feel that if this trite silly imbecilic song does not make you dance or smile and sing then you are a nerd with no humor. When Perry left Addiction and started Porno for Pyros he did a great song called We'll Make Great "Pets" and as a showman with Porno for Pyros at Woodstock '94 , Perry was good.

Know the first two albums, haven't heard the reunion. Overall I like your takes, especially thinking now that a 90s Janes Addiction album would've been great, with a little more stylistic experimentation and variations. But as we have it now, a good band but not among my very favorites. I have Nothing's Shocking slightly over Ritual, I think it flows a little better. Obvious is probably my least favorite track from the two and disrupts the pacing. But Standing in the Shower Thinking is also pretty dumb...#1 Jason? What are you even talking about? My top 5 would be: 1. Summertime Rolls 2. Three Days 3. Classic Girl 4. Ocean Size 5. Ted, Just Admit It (ok I see the Ted Bundy reference now, but still think the song name is a mistake, should've just been title track "Nothing's Shocking")

They had occasional song "highlights" but their albums were mostly inconsistent and...very boring. The main reason was that most tunes just were not songs but pure showcases of the talents and non-talents in the band. Posing without hairspray is still posing and worst if the non-talents take all the spotlight. (I heard their albums when they were released but put them onto the shelves to never pull them out again for 30 years...Revisiting them confirmed my memory.) 4. The Great Escape Artist 2,0 (Their big deficit on earlier albums was the complete failure of song writing. On their last attempt, they have it - does it help? What if the songs have nothing to do with the band? It just drags on and on...) 3. Strays 2,0 (On their first comeback attempt they serve pretty standard hard rock. One song, a lot of noise, and generic poses and moves. Dull.) 2. Ritual de lo Habitual 2,5 (The complete absence of any song writing, meaning or structure in music is not a problem per se, it becomes one if you perform in a style that only works with those. Strangely, the longest track is the only one to deliver what is needed, even if pretty generic.) 1. Nothing's Shocking 3,0 (Only 3 of the tunes here are actual songs and those are relatively good, the remainders are showing the bassist's and guitarist's moments of skill in pointless breakouts unrelated to the singer's meanderings. In fact not shocking, except for people who spent the 70s and 80s listening to mainstream rock. Posing without hairspray is still...posing, Mr. Farrell.) Songs: 5. Strays 4. Mountain Song 3. Jane Says 2. Three Days 1. Ocean Size

@@TastesLikeMusic Kidding!!! I have a gothic sensibility. Honestly, something about Farrell's voice hits me the wrong way. I have the same issue with Axl Rose and Robert Plant; just something in that vocal range, and I have a large tolerance for voices others find annoying.

i wasn't a huge fan of theirs, but i remember in the desert of late 80s LA hair metal stuff that i SO hated, really hated, that there didn't seem to be any actual rock'n'roll music going on at all. Chimey guitar REM college rock for sure. American hardcore, i guess, but it was all shouting and tempo changes and angular chord changes. Before grunge hit and reset the game... and pretty soon became just another style that got copied badly unbtil you got sick of it... before that, there was early RHCP, Fishbone, and Jane's Addiction. They were not a bad copy of Poison's bad copy of Crue's bad copy of VH. A breath of fresh air.... proof of intelligent life.

Vocal resonance is one of the most subjective things ever, isn’t it? Perry’s voice is that of a healer for me.

Yea..I think Jane’s Addiction unfortunately fall into that category of Guns N’ Roses-led dudebro sleaze metal from 1987-1990. Definitely a product of their time. At least Perry Ferrell did try to do something different with Porno for Pyros.

I see you have Gene Clark coming soon...much of his discography is collaborations, so I am not sure how many (and which) albums are part of the Listography. I think there are just 5 that he has under his name alone (Spoiler....maybe it is not too important as those 5 are the top ones anyway.)
