I was also thinking: Yeah Perry's from another country, it's called California lol! Born and raised in NYC but moved out there after high school and became a surfer, and he became such a southern Cali boy thru and thru. And hey, yeah, I was there for the first Lollapalooza too! Man, we were all living on another planet together back then. Good times 💕✨

I'm pretty sure Perry is from the same dimension that Bjork is from. But, I could be wrong, and he's from the exact opposite dimension of Bjork, where all the male heroes are women and all the women heroes are men... It gets VERY quantum when we start talking about "The Visitors to Our Plane"... but, I welcome them all! Its all Quantum Hot Dog Theory (a REAL THING!!! Look it up, and you'll realize how hard scientists are TRYING to be able to explain things without sounding COMPLETELY insane. Haha!) Jimi was probably the first, but clearly there was a break in our plane that allowed awesome "people" in at some point. 🤣😎

I can't take responsibility for my state of mind at that concert for a multitude of reasons but if you were on the lawn at Irvine I "accidentally" started the first bonfire that had a huge mosh pit around, other fires soon followed, Perry pointed up at us and then the fire extinguishers hit, making another cool effect of fog across the lawn.... the hwy traffic tail lights and fighter jets afterburners flying around doing maneuvers (on LSD) was just too good!

Here's a little background on this song. "Jane" is Jane Bainter and I believe she was Perry's roommate. She was addicted to heroin and is actually who the band is named after. She dated a guy named Sergio who was abusive and she would always say she was going to leave him and kick her addiction tomorrow, but would always go back to him and not get clean. Also, walking down St. Andrews to "go to the store and get her dinner" was her going to buy and use drugs. I'm sure if I got any of my facts wrong someone will let me know. Great song pick and reaction!! 🙂

The Ritual de lo Habitual record is a seminal one that not many people have properly in context. The rock scene of the US area, in particular, was dominated by hair / glam / pop metal, a legacy of the flowering of the genre in the 1980s: Mötley Crüe and Guns N 'Roses above all, but also Poison, Cinderella, Ratt , Warrant, Skid Row. An almost undisputed domain, in which that masterpiece for initiates that had been Nothing's Shocking had remained confined to the niche (warm, welcoming and reassuring as long as you want, but always a niche). But with the second LP in the studio, Jane's Addiction mixed a cocktail of funk, metal, post punk, classic rock and psychedelia that, with just decent support - the minimum wage, actually - from Warner kicked through the entrance to the mainstream.Published in 1990 it predated Nevermind and the Grunge scene that completely turned around the whole rock scene. So basically it maybe defines as one of the main precursors of the greatest revolution in rock of the last 40 years
@jasonsmith6663 жыл бұрын
When Nothing Shocking came out it was a genuine 'alternative' rock album when the word didn't mean a style. With Ritual de lo Habitual, it was both more eclectic and mainstream at the same time.

This is a deep song that always moved me, because I empathized with the subject. As you found out, this song (and the band name) were based on a real person, who was one of the band member's roommates for a while. They said that the real Jane ultimately did kick her addiction and was living a happy life; and she was fine with the band telling her story.

1988! "Jane Says" was a harbinger of musical genre changes to come. Jane's Addiction's live cover of The Velvet Underground's "Rock n Roll" off their first album rocks. Thematically, "Jane Says" shares a lot with "She Talks To Angels" by The Black Crowes from 1990.

That is a steel drum, good ear. This song was one of the first alternative songs to break through to the mainstream. This was part of the long lead in to Nirvana breaking through and making "underground" music the dominant music of the early 90's. The Pixies, Sonic Youth and Husker Du were important bands of this period as well. All of this music was bubbling up in the mid to late 80s.
@leonid44682 жыл бұрын
And thank goodness it did. Last era of "rebel" music, and when "alternative" became a catch-all term for any music that was unique, often amazing and wasn't Adult Contemporary. And even though they were all often lumped together, you could tell each band apart within two seconds.

Three Days and Ted Just Admit It are two of their deeper cuts, for something that grabs you right out of the gate I would recommend Mountain Song, Ocean Size, Up the Beach, Stop, Been Caught Stealing.... I also think you would enjoy the whole Nothing Shocking album, just like Dirt by AIC theres not a bad tune on it. Perry Farrell does have a very unique voice, the whole band was pretty unique. They were also a founding band of the Lollapalooza music festival. You are one of the only people reacting to Janes so cheers for that. Maybe also check out more Stone Temple Pilots, another underrated overlooked band.

I know you recorded the squad a while ago but I’ve been looking for anybody that reacts to Jane says. You are one of the few. First time watching you. Thank you thank you for this. I have to say that I enjoyed listening to your entire ideas behind the song. It’s amazing to me that you got so much from the lyrics about Jane and her state of mind. Even though you were looking at a relationship that she’s trying so hard to get out of, everything you said about her during the rest of the song makes perfect sense with its real meaning. This song is about heroin. Jane was addicted and Sergio was her drug dealer. That’s why I’m gonna kick it tomorrow. And she wants to get away from the scene in these people in this addiction and why psychologically she doesn’t know what to do about it. On another note Perry’s voice is just unreal, so low and raspy and strong. I highly recommend you watching Jane says in the live version. You really can seePerry who is definitely hard-core punk alternative rock. Dave Navarro is in this band who made one album with red hot chili peppers. Also in the song flea from our RHCP plays! You’ve also got a great ear because those were steel drums! Now I’ve got a look through your stuff. So excited. Peace

It's probably already been said but I'll say it anyway: Sergio is her drug dealer. Pulls her dinner from her pocket is a reference to getting high. Going to Spain means going to rehab where she wants to go but never actually goes. Saying she only knows if they want her and she only wants them if they want her means she's selling herself and she doesn't like any of the men she's "with" but she wants the money or drugs so she wants them if they want her and because of her lifestyle she's never had a man actually love her and see her as anything other than something to do. It's sad. Really sad. I've known people like this. Both men and women. They just have nothing left in them, nothing to inspire them be better, nothing to make them feel like they deserve to have a better life and no reason to want to change or care where they end up.

Jane's Addiction paved the way for a whole genre of alternative music. "Underrated" is an overused term that gets thrown around too much, but this band truly is IMO. Their musicianship and creativity are off the charts in my book. And I particularly love their spin off band (Porno for Pyros) album "Good God's Urge". The ethereal nature of their music is the thread that runs through it all. Probably not for typical radio music fans.

I respect your analysis bro. For me, Jane is a moderately intelligent, young and beautiful woman who experienced a potentially traumatic childhood. That, or in her quest to find herself as a teenager with low self esteem she tried drugs and her life path slowly became more blurred and constricted by drugs and unresolved self esteem issues. She's always kicking tomorrow because in her damaged mental space she is not strong enough to see beyond her addictions to drugs and abusive men.

Most (if not all) members of Jane's Addiction were notoriously heroin addicts at some point in their lives. My little brother (RIP) was a huge fan before they were 'known.' Yes, those are indeed steel drums and they used them in concert too. Dave Navarro (played a bit with Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nine-Inch Nails, Porno for Pyros, and several other bands) was a founding member and lead guitarist... I see where someone else in the comments noted him as well. You definitely nailed the ambiance of the song... it has a sense of "hidden dispair." That's how I've always felt about it too.

I see he figured out it’s about her drug addiction. But did he figure out that every sentence is a reference to her life as an addict: Sergio is her drug dealer, the dinner in her pocket is heroin, took a swing and cannot hit is when you waste the dope, getting money saved is the impossibly of process when you’re living on the streets with a drug habit, gonna kick tomorrow is kicking drugs and it’s always going to be tomorrow just not today. Any drug addict gets this song and usually it hurts.
