Jane Seymour Collection on Letterman, 1986-1996 Updated

Jane Seymour appeared twice on Late Night, two months apart. It was reported that after her second appearance, she left the studio in tears. Here are the clips.
Note: This is an updated version with the addition of Dave's comments on "Later with Bob Costas."
1a. Bill Carter briefly discusses Jane's guest appearance with Dave on Mark Malkoff's "Carson Podcast" from April 30, 2020. That interview can be heard in full here: carsonpodcast....
1b. Dave discusses Jane Seymour's appearances on "Later with Bob Costas," taped January 12, 1989.
2. December 10, 1986. After plugging Jane's book, Jane Seymour's Guide to Romantic Living, Dave recites a top ten list featuring Bob Rooney's own guide of same. Later in the show, Jane makes her first appearance.
2. February 12, 1987. Jane's second appearance, again plugging the same book. Followed by Dave and Paul discussing her two segments. And then a last swipe during the show's close.
3. February 16, 1987. Four days later, Marilu Henner references Jane.
4. March 5, 1987. Another reference to Jane's last appearance in a Viewer Mail letter.
5. May 7, 1996. It would be nine years and one divorce later when Jane would guest again on Dave, here on Late Show to promote her television hit "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman."

Dave's exactly right in the Costas interview; if he was so disgusted the content of the book, he never should've had her on once, let alone twice. You don't invite someone in your home to be rude, sarcastic, and dismissive of them. Unless they do you it to you first as in the case of Van Johnson.

This is what made letterman entertaining. You never knew if the guest was nuts, or if Dave was nuts. He got moody. It was edgy and unpredictable in a boring world where Lyle Waggoner was still considered an ‘entertainer.’ . After the original Saturday night live show went downhill in 1980, Letterman was the only comedy worth watching. To me, it far surpassed even SNL’s best years.

It’s amazing how you managed to record all Letterman episodes dating back to the 1980s. It was one of the best things I have ever read on NYT.

Hey Don! Excellent collection. I love Jane Seymour, she's one of my favorite actresses! So glad I found her interviews here on YT. Speaking about interviews, do you have Natasha Richardson's appearance on Letterman Show from December 13 2002? Interestingly I have many of Letterman episodes from 2002 (I taped them back in the old days) and even segment of the episode from December 13, but not her part. Is there any way I could watch that interview? Do you have her episode appearance? Thanks.

As I’ve posted elsewhere, I'm guessing it was his disgust with her privileged wealth. Rich people: kidnap your husband to a fancy resort after he slips an expensive jewel into your wine. Regular people: go to a park on Roosevelt Island and marvel at the Manhattan skyline.

I alluded to this on the earlier post, but do you think this could be one of the things that led to the end of Barry Sand’s job? I don’t know the exact date of the transition, but it seems like this happened near the end of his tenure, and Dave seems truly annoyed at the fact that the staff was trying to do a lame tie-in with Valentine’s Day.

I really don't think Dave was rude to her during these segments. He was acting a bit silly, but she seemed to be taking it in stride and playing along. If she truly was upset when she left after the second appearance, I'm not sure why. Either way, it was a neat set of videos. As always, thanks Don. I'll repeat what someone else asked...what was the "Las Vegas fiasco" that you mentioned elsewhere?

I agree, I was taken aback how quickly she insults his intelligence. There may be some context from pre-show interviews between them which explains such actions, but in my view she doesn't help herself come across as endearing or elegant when she starts by saying her book is over his head.

If he would have read the book he would have known that she gives all sorts of ideas for romance. She gives her experiences and shouldn't be made to feel bad sharing. She wasn't bragging she didn't say prices, David did. Letterman was rude. It doesn't matter if she has money. She comes from very humble beginnings and was able to better herself.

When Dave initially had her on I think she was a replacement/standby guest who was interested in using her celebrity to make some money hawking a pretentious book about nothing. Context is everything and the context was all wrong here. Dave felt like this was an insult to the integrity of the show as well as his audience and he was immediately on the defensive. He was almost apologizing to the viewer for this obvious bit of unpleasantness. It was show business in its worst form and something Dave detested. She knew she was on the defensive as well and it shows. Dave took her to task for this celebrity whoring and wouldn't let it slide. Everything ended up all right in the end with her hit show Dr.Quinn. Her celebrity status restored. All was forgiven.

Just an amazing lovely woman. Had the chance to meet her here in Dallas when she was having an art exhibition at a gallery - probably approximately 2012 I would guess. As a side note, when he asked her what was the last romantic thing you did… Her just standing there or just sitting there could be the answer; so captivating with her voice and incomparable looks (even at the age she was at in 2012) are the epitome of romance. Yes even her burning the dinner would be extremely romantic, LOL! (And I'm only half kidding :-)

I think Jane was right. David just didn't get it but he understood Playboy. That's what he wanted to talk about but he was trying to be courteous about a boring subject to him so he stuck with the book.

I understand where Letterman is coming from in terms of celebrities being out of touch with most of the general public, but I don't think Jane Seymour had any malicious intent to brag about her life, certainly not more than any other celebrity that writes a book. Take a look at most autobiographies, they're typically a shrine to oneself with a little bit of murky water dripped inside (drugs, alcohol, infidelities, and scandal) to make the reader feel as though he or she is more relatable to the author. I think Letterman could have been just slightly more gentle at his approach to his opinion on the subject, at least when she was the guest on his show. #JustSayin

He admitted on Howard Cosells show that he felt uneasy interviewing women,so maybe that explains it,and in the early years dave was a not a great interviewer,but as time went on he became better at it.

I think he used that uneasiness to the show's (and Seymour's) advantage. It must've been quite a talking point at that time, and I wonder how many have bought the book out of curiosity, just to see if it was over their own heads. A polite and agreeable interview wouldn't have the same effect for show ratings and book sales.
