I heard Lin saying that the Bible quote "everyone shall sit under their own vine and fig tree, and no one shall make them afraid" was actually Washington's most frequently used Bible quote. He mentioned it in over 50 speeches and letters. So take Lin's decision to use it as a lyric and add Chris' voice singing it and what you get? An outstanding piece of beauty.

My favorite part- 5:18 when Lin sings "George Washington's going home" all by himself. I love how the ensemble sounds in the Cast Recording saying this line, but there's something really powerful/sad about Hamilton's sole voice delivering this line.

Well George Washington throughout the play kind of becomes Hamilton’s father figure, or rather the father Hamilton always wanted. When Washington started calling him son and Hamilton screamed “CALL ME SON ONE MORE TIME!” in pure anger, it was because Hamilton was still triggered by his own father stepping out on their family. Washington essentially takes a fondness for Hamilton, he views Hamilton like a son, he doesn’t let Hamilton just throw himself into war, because he knows that Hamilton wants to rise or die. Washington sees Hamilton’s heart and mind, Hamilton is young, brilliant and everything Washington wants to America to stand for, he sees a lot of himself in Hamilton, he knows Hamilton’s most powerful weapon is his mind and his words. Washington immediately decides that he isn’t gonna let Hamilton throw his life away with his shot, no matter how much Hamilton seems desperate to do so. So over the years, their relationship builds into a father-son bond - Washington respects Hamilton’s thoughts on topics over everyone else’s and protects him politically too, something quickly noticed by his rivals - Burr and Jefferson. Hamilton respects and looks up to Washington, he listens and obeys him and seeks his approval and praise. So when Washington decides to retire and go home, Hamilton not only treats it like he is losing his mentor and protector, but also like he’s losing his father, which is why I think that Lin always plays it like Hamilton is crying and his voice breaks by the end of the song.

I think this song, especially as performed by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Chris Jackson, does an amazing job on capturing the complexities of the Washington/Hamilton relationship. This especially includes having Hamilton begin to drop his attempts to talk Washington out of it after Washington quotes the Bible, ""everyone shall sit under their own vine and fig tree, and no one shall make them afraid" Without saying a word, Miranda conveys Hamilton coming to understand what Washington is asking for, the opportunity to live his final years at his beloved Mt. Vernon after devoting virtually his entire adult life to public service.

This is one of my favourite songs from the musical. As a foreigner, I never really appreciated George Washington's impact as a leader. In my mind then, Thomas Jefferson was a far greater figure because of his writings. It's through Hamilton that I really understood how instrumental Washington was in making America a leading nation. Chris Jackson is perfect for the role in how he carries himself. I only wish we'd have the chance to see the original Broadway cast!

Angelica Cruz LOL, if you think Thomas Jefferson is amazing you should read this one document. Basically after Jefferson, my son, purchased a large territory from The French, Alexander Hamilton completely BASHED him, saying it was all luck. It was great.

Yeah Lin has totally tweeted and talked in interviews about "dropping in" on productions to play the role. He says he's written a role he can play "until I need help jumping up on the desk" (paraphrased from tweet). He said watching the Chicago cast makes him really itchy to get up there and "play with his friends." He's expected to drop in on the London production while he's currently there filming Mary Poppins Returns. He got too old to play Usnavi (the lead from his first musical, In the Heights)--he said he won't play him in the movie being developed by Jon Woo and original book writer Quiara Alegria Hudes. I also gather from interviews that Hamilton is a character that incorporates a lot more of the essence of his life than Usnavi.

They made an archival film of the show with the original Broadway cast (including Jonathan Groff who came back especially for the filming) over two performances at the end of June 2016, which will *eventually* be available, but you're right, not until the show has been live on many, many more stages. (I'm imagining not until it's been in regional productions for awhile. It's not always going to be only in a few big cities, folks! Every successful Broadway show goes from New York, to national touring, to regional tours, to amateur and high school productions.) Here's the lowdown on the film and why it won't be released right away: purelintrash.tumblr.com/post/146680548061/purelintrash-in-all-media-now-known-or This is good on why films of Broadway shows are not more common or widely available: purelintrash.tumblr.com/post/153802017631/your-tags-on-that-bootleg-discourse-post-are-so

Chris - I love his voice. I can hear a little bit of "When your're home" from In the Heights in that last note.

The address affects me now just the same as it did the first time I heard it on the album. Such a powerful use of their real words in an artistic context.

I'll be honest, not a lot of Hamilton live performances live up to the (albeit well-produced and therefore finely honed) OST, but Chris Jackson did not disappoint. Dude's got some pipes.

Totally agree. I've seen a bootlegged version of Hamilton (whoops) and I wasn't blown away by anyone's live performance except for Chris and Jonathan Groff. Chris' voice is magic.

+Scheurthiaume that's because it's a bootleg video which is why it's a bad idea to watch them. I'm gonna tell you from experience, LIVE is mind blowing beyond the OST

I was impressed by all the voices from the performers in Hamilton and they all sounded very good, but Lin Manuel is not a very good singer :/ extremely talented rapper/composer/lyricist and a genius but yeah not such a great singer. He has amazing cast members and a great ensemble though!
