There will never be words adequate to sufficiently thank Ms, Baker for this performance which conveys so naturally and so beautifully the utterly transcendent life-affirming message of this heart-wrenchingly beautiful piece, which is of a final journey infused with longing but that ultimately will lead us to our true home as we achieve oneness with the eternal. Yes, Ms. Baker's contribution does much to allow us to feel the hopefulness of Mahler's profoundly consoling message that with our end when we experience our natural oneness with nature, the eternal resting place, we will enjoy a life beautiful, and true beyond the reach of death...

I had the good fortune to hear Dame Janet perform this work live at The Royal Festival Hall in London. It was a quite magical experience. At the end there were a few moments of silence as we in the audience came back to earth then followed tumultuous applause. Dame Janet will hate to be called such, but in truth she is a national treasure.

Janet Baker ! Her singing is full of musical and poetic insight. The listener is literally transported here into a floating dimensionless of words and music. Her interpretation results into multiple layers of different voices (at least it seems like it) and has sublime narrative values. The tempi adopted by the conductor let the voice and the orchestra respond to each other like a breath. With Kathleen Ferrier, it's my favorite version. Thank you for posting this great document.

And of course there is the completely wonderful Kathleen Ferrier who recorded it in Vienna with Bruno Walter when they both knew that she was dying of breast cancer. She apparently asked him “was I all right?” She was a very great artist.

The Kathleen Ferrier version is, for me, definitive and unsurpassable. She was able to add dimensions of emotion, power, richness and beauty above and beyond any of her peers.

She recently had a public conversation with Simon Callow at the Wigmore Hall. It is very interesting and is available on KZbin. She was always a glorious singer and always made sure that she so deeply understood the words, music and character she was portraying that it was thoroughly internalised so that she, as she says in her book “Full Circle” was ready to give it to the audience.

I love the way Janet baker sings this piece. I find it much more convincing and true than the dying way of Kathleen Ferrier in all her recordings. On top of that, R. Kubelik is marvelous.

Discrepo. Esto depende de la pasión con que lo siente quien lo canta y quien lo que se escucha, en cómo se identifican el uno y el otro. Personalmente, admirando a Baker tanto como a Ferrier, creo que lo siento y lo canto interiormente como Ferrier. Esto es algo personal, pues ambas son maravillosas.

Good enough. Problem is that The Abschied is one of the musical pieces so intense, so "mich-dich" that normally "change" depending on an unusual number of factors - mood, ambiance, inter-silence of floating violins´ stream, ditto with clarinets, flutes, it´s a permanent magic caleidoscopy. Dame Baker did a good job, but within her own singing "soul", not beyond. There is no perfect ABSCHIED. As much as Fischer-Dieskau, Margaret Price, C. Ludwig, M. Forrester usw, tried their best. But that is a undepassable boundary.

First, in the English honours system, you use the person's first name, not second, although it might seem like you're being too personal. But that's how it works = so it is Dame Janet, and, for example, Sir John ( Barbirolli). Second, I don't understand what you mean when you say that Dame Janet '... did a good job, but within her own singing 'soul', not beyond.' I can't think of a more beautiful or insightful performance than this one, including the deeply committed playing from the BRSO. I rank this performance with the one by Fischer- Dieskau singing the baritone version with a searingly intense Bernstein/ VPO from about the same year.

There are quite a few recordings of Dame Janet singing Das Lied; the Haitink studio version, and two more live ones under Leppard and Kempe, but this one with Kubelik is the finest one of all, absolutely shattering in its emotional intensity. Dame Janet was always so specific in her response to music and text, but here she transcends even her own high standards, the sighing loneliness almost unbearably palpable. I can only listen on very rare occasions, so movingly eloquent is the poetry conveyed here.

I never knew this recording existed and I totally agree with you, so expressive in all its refined nuances, so much richer in all its colours and moods than for instance the Berstein recording with Ludwig, in spite of the magnificance of Ludwig. Kubelik and Baker, an ideal combination apparently, movingly eloquent indeed. The way she sings "er fragte ihn wohin er führe und auch warum es müsste sein" took me by surprise in its freedom and expression and left me in tears...

Personally I think her recordings of Der Abschied are all the finest ever. The Haitink version is excellent as well, though I have to say, I'd love to hear Nathalie Stutzman sing this.
