Legendary producer Jimmy Jam joins Diallo Riddle and LUXXURY to break down the making of Janet Jackson’s classic album, “Control”. Jimmy takes us inside the studio and breaks down the process of getting to know Ms. Jackson (if you’re nasty) and creating a sound and attitude that worked for her. This is the first of a two-part special with Jimmy Jam.
New here? On each episode of this music podcast friends Diallo Riddle (Emmy-nominated star and creator of HBO Max’s South Side and IFC’s Sherman’s Showcase) and Blake ""LUXXURY"" Robin (Music Producer & TikTok creator) will hilariously break down ONE SONG from the pop music canon that you know - or need to know - but have never heard quite like this.

I love seeing Jimmy on the media run in support of Janet lately! Such a gentleman and passionate mentor. Chivalry is not gone, folks.

This was a great, informative interview. A bit of feedback: The host shouldn’t ask a question and then interrupt the guest while he’s trying to answer the question posed.

A cardinal sin in any interview. Let them talk. Take notes and ask to elaborate later!

I respectfully disagree. The casual conversational nature is what makes this show clap. 👏 A stoic NPR interview this is not. As a musician and SUPER music NERD, I am grateful.

I think he was just extremely thrilled to be talking to Jimmy Jam and had so much to ask him but yes he should’ve took a seat for a moment.

No lie i got a tear in my eye having WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME LATELY broken down like that ESPECIALLY the part with the funky bass sound. And isolated Janet & JIMMY vocals. 🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲 This was so freakin' cool! Loved the in-depth breakdown & bts look into a GROUNDBREAKING ALBUM. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

AAs someone for whom the Control album was THE album of 1986 for me, and is still far and away my favourite album by ANY artist for me (I'm more a singles guy anyway), I love this interview: all the BTS stuff and hearing the breakdowns. It's truly fascinating and educational. Only thing would have made this better would have been to hear Jimmy's approach to remixing the tracks from the album for the clubs!

can yall please talk to jimmy about the unbreakable. It is the one number one album that janet had that isn't talked about enough. It's my favourite Janet album as a Gen-Z person

The only Ensoniq preset I can find that might fit Jimmy Jam’s description of the Nasty sounds is the disk with “Tympello” on the left side of the keyboard and “Wooden Flutes” on the right.

I have to listen again. I remember her sounding good on it but not loving it. Liking but not loving. I was all about the harder almost urban songs at the time. I need to reassess

Well it’s like this Joe unbeknownst to him. They did put the Minneapolis stank on that record. All those horn hits from the Prince style for The Time. At least the embellished version of the sound. That is what Prince was trying to avoid. But, what he unfortunately missed was having the real empire he desired working with others on that collaborative level.

Dats one thing about certain interviewers gang dat annoys me. Tha constant interrupting the person speaking. Let tha man finish his thought. Let the man finish the question you asked b4 comin in wantin to over talk folks foe. I get their excited cuz they have a legend in tha house, but you gotta contain your excitement n let folks finish speakin. Js

Control did have Time-esque vibes. Same instruments and same personnel. I feel so bad that they had to fake out Joe Jackson . 😒 thats exactly who you would want to mirror during that time. Can't beat success.

Daaaang there was a question about the Jackson vocal percussion style and Jimmy was about to dive in about it but got cut off by the interviewer’s rambling jokes liiiiike. You have one chance to speak to a legend y’all. Ask and listen! Otherwise I’m smiling from this interview haha 😅
