Thanks for taking us to Glodok (Chinatown Jakarta). We stayed above the market in a hotel way back in 1989 - 32 years ago. It was our first visit to Jakarta and we were there a week. We had come from Bandung on the train....memories....

The fried food vendor is selling combro (oncom dijero) and misro which are fried cassava paste filled with spicy paste made from oncom, hard to explain) the misro is filled with brown sugar, the white fruit is kolang kaling which is from a palm tree, usually mixed with other items such as jelly, fermented cassava (peuyeum) ice, syrup, its good for your joints. The pink vegetable is the tuber of a plant which you can fry, make into cakes. And yes you didn't go to the finer better known places. You shud try Indonesian fine dining (Babah - Merdeka Utara, Loro Jonggrang - Teuku Umar, Plataran - Menteng, Kebayoran Baru etc).

Janet, if you wanna go to Bandung, you can go by train, or by bus, or rent a car. And you can choose the faster route via Cikampek toll way. Or.. if you wanna see a different atmosphere, try a challenging route. Start from Jakarta --> Bogor --> Puncak --> Cianjur -- > Bandung. The view is amazing. You can see beautiful tea plantation and get fresh air in Puncak. You can stop by for your lunch in Puncak. There are many resturants offer Indonesian food. But dont ever trip on weekend (saturday and Sunday) due to the traffic in Puncak.

@@JanetNewenham yeay..good choice. You can visit Bogor Botanical Garden. There is a beautiful palace inside Botanical Garden where President Jokowi lives. If you want to spend the night in Bogor, there are many hotels around Botanical Garden, so you can take a walk to come to the garden in the morning. Sometime I run around Botanical Garden on Sunday Morning. After exploring the garden, you can try food street along Surya Kencana Street. Try soto kuning bogor, asinan bogor, laksa bogor and many more. If you still have much time you can go to Curug (waterfall). Bogor has many beautiful waterfalls around Sentul, and mount Salak. Bogor is known as Kota Hujan (rain city). The rain is almost everyday. Usually the rain fall at noon (about 3 pm til night). So if you want to do outdoor activity, you'd better start in the morning. Have fun !
