This was my first time as a foreigner in Indonesia experience the islamic holy month for muslims ramadan. I didn't know at first but Indonesia has the largest population of muslims in the world. The kindest and warmth of the Indonesian people will never stop suprising me. I was able to fast in Jakarta and experience Jummah prayers at the amazing Istiqlal mosque. I was than able to smell extra nice and purchase some Ramadan Oud.
I was able to break my fast with delicious indonesian foods at the Sarinah food street. I had sate ayam and the most spicy delicious nasi goreng and my favourite Martabak. The energy was beautiful and I spoke the little Bahasa I know to everyone.
I finished off my special ramadan experience in Indonesia back at Istiqlal mosque for the evening prayers where I spoke to the army, and many indonesians. The energy was truly magical and I feel extremely lucky to have been able to experience Ramadan in such a wonderful city and country.

When I was still studying in Bandung, I often stayed at the house of my non-Muslim college friends. You know, my friend actually provided prayer mats for those of us who were staying at his house. Even if we hold an iftar together, those who are not Muslim will join us. So for religious matters as long as I live I have never experienced the slightest tension...😊

In Indonesia, it is uncommon to greet Ramadan Kareem or even Ramadan/Ied Mubarak, we do not know how to respond. Instead we greet with Selamat Puasa (pronounce: slum-mud-pooh-us-ah) meaning Happy Fasting, and greet Minal aidzin wal faizin (arabic words) during Ied celebration

in Indonesia it isn't common to say "Ramadhan Kareem" we say "Selamat Ramadhan". We just say it with Indonesian language (it's also applied to other Islamic term, like Ied Mubarak/Hari Raya Idul Fitri, etc) That's why when you say "Ramadhan Kareem" to people in your video, they rarely answer it. Indonesians very rarely hear the words "Ramadan Kareem" and "Ramadan Mubarak" so some of them look confused. they usually say “Marhaban yaa Ramadan” and “Selamat Berpuasa”(Happy Fasting). Then when during Eid Al-Fitr, they also never say "Eid Mubarak", but they say "Minal aidin wal faizin" and usually it is continued "Mohon maaf lahir dan batin"(Forgive me body and soul), and sometimes they say “Selamat Hari Raya Idul Fitri”(Happy Eid Al-Fitr/Happy Eid Mubarak)
